Today's environmentalist are the heroes of the moment but their excesses and underlying motivations will soon show everyone that the leaders are either naive or power hungry.
In this story we will explore both of the negative possibilities of this crusade. There is even a darker side that will be hinted at but not brought out in a direct manner. The style will be in a Science Fiction mode with large doses of political and economic theory mixed in with future science.
The soap will be multileveled with many psychological aspects of human relations explored and connected to the political preferences of each individual. The good will often appear bad and the bad will often appear good.
LOCATION: The Socialist Republic of California.

PRIORITIES AND ANTERIORITIES
THE BIRTH
Inside the Humanarium's aquariums were the new multi-purpose fish farms. Sometime in December of 1996 a very special batch of baby guppies were born. This genetic experiment started about one hundred years ago and now it was about to fulfill a strange and wonderful destiny. But how you say could a common guppy have a significant effect on life as we new it back then? You won't believe the answers.
When it came to the preservation of endangered species, the times before the birth of the blue guppies were very radical. On one side you had a lot of well meaning environmentalists and on the other side you had the nasty money grubbing developers destroying acre after acre of land for the sole purpose of profit.
Sid, what makes you think the voters will buy into this kind of a scam, said congressman Bohme at a secret meeting in his oceanfront hideaway, to his soon to be political gofer?
Bill, environmental issues are the new currency of power. Hell! It use to just come down to money, but now its all about proving you're not on the side of big money. All you have to do now to get elected is bash the big developers. Make them look bad and you'll look like an environmental hero. The public loves to bring down the most successful people amongst them. It feeds their envy and petty jealousies. They feel good, like somehow now, maybe, they will have a chance to succeed, Sid reminded him.
Fine, but I don't know anything about birds and bugs. How am I suppose to come across as an expert. They'll smell a fraud and boot me out. No, this is too risky. I'm going to stick to the old ways. I'll just come out with a new social program that will solve the crime and poverty problems. Now that's something I can really sink my teeth into. Besides it's a good way to bring down the rich. The mutts will like this "feel good" program even better than my last plan, Bill said.
I disagree. With the events in the Soviet block being on the front page all the time, people are beginning to catch onto the fact that these social programs are just defacto communism wrapped up in a do-gooder package. They are starting to realize how a similar our system is. You are going to have to attack from a different point to keep them off guard, Sid said.
Fine, but how do I start, Bill said?
That's why I brought Ned here today. He's going to be your guide to the wonderful world of plant and animal preservation. All you have to do is listen to him and you'll become an expert in environmental assignation. Your victims won't know what hit them. The control and power you will achieve will move your political career forward with each new breed that you save from those greedy developers. I'm going to leave you two to get together on the details. I've already briefed Ned on the strategy. I've got to get back to the office. Let me know when you feel confident enough with the background material. We'll get a meeting together and plan your new image, Sid said as he was leaving.
Don't forget the party Saturday night, Bill said as Sid was going out the door.
I won't. After all, I'm bringing the party favors, two blondes and a redhead. Take care, said Sid as he went chuckling down the stairs thinking what a fool the congressman was for having this beach hideaway. His wife could destroy his career anytime she chooses. He would have to protect the congressman from himself. The congressman was briefed by Ned Cole about some simple facts on how to manipulate the public for his own benefit using the environmental issue as his power source. Ned pointed out, that all he needed to do was form a major committee made up of scientist promoting the preservation of all types of plants and animals and their ecosystems. Add some animal right activists and they will supply you with all the ammunition you need. He told the congressman that after he knew what the target would be all Bill needed to do was wrap this situation up in as many resolutions as possible. As soon as the regulations were written, the developers would be on his doorstep trying to amend as many provisions as possible. The money would role in from PAC-like groups and from the general public trying to save the poor little "whatever" from extinction. You just have to play both sides to the middle and you'll have a win/win situation for yourself. If you get good enough at the game, you will surly be asked to head an organization that would oversee the entire spectrum of issues. You then would have more power than you ever dreamed of. The longer Ned talked the more relaxed the congressman became. Soon it was apparent that he was getting the idea and toward the end of the briefing he broke out in a cynical laugh. Ned knew he had won over another convert. He was soon to find out just how enthusiastic the congressman really was.
Ned, this a great plan the two of you have come up with. It seems that I will be able to control vast amounts of real estate without even putting up a penny. I will be cast in the role as savior to many small critters and looked up to by my constituents as a truly compassionate man. All the while, we will be picking their pockets for more and more money for the programs that we will design. What more could a politician ask for? You guys are great and don't think I won't remember when it comes time to hand out the plums. Both of you will be in top level jobs if this plan works even half as good as I think it will, congressman Bohme said as he was rising to look out at this summers crop of beach bunnies. He reached for his binoculars to check out a group of young college girls disrobing and getting ready to strut their stuff. What a life, he thought. He couldn't wait for the Saturday night party. Sid never let him down when it came to finding pretty young things. He often wondered how he could always come up with such quality puntang.
Ned sat there quietly savoring his victory after the briefing, noting only how quickly the congressman's mind wondered whenever he saw a pretty face. No wonder Sid could use the congressman to do his bidding so easily. If only the congressman knew how easy it would be to bring him down.
Ned, I want you to start gathering the names of scientists and specialist that would be good for the committee that I'm going to form. We'll call it the "Endangered Species Protectorate", how do you like that name?
It does sound important doesn't it? Said Ned, with a sly grin on his face. I'll start work on the list today and by Saturdays party you should have a good core group to start with. Ned got up to leave and shook the congressman's hand.
Do a good job Ned, the foundation of any project often is the deciding factor in its success or failure, said the congressman as he was closing the door behind Ned. Bill returned to the window to watch the girls. He did his most creative thinking while contemplating the beauty of the universe. He knew that Sid and Ned thought him the fool for his philandering but this was his way of ferreting out his enemies among his close associates. He knew that anyone trying to manipulate him would use his personal life as the weapon. What they didn't know was that he and his wife had planned this strategy to cover her activities. It gave him a way of testing the loyalty of the people around him. So far, he didn't have to use the foil but he had a strong feeling that the game was just beginning. This new plan, the more he thought about it, was going to lead him straight to the top. He had to play his cards right. It was time to get his media people in for a meet to feel them out on the subject. He needed a reaffirmation of his own conclusions and he needed to practice the rhetoric of the environmentalist crowd. This was going to be fun, the congressman thought as he spotted a particularly attractive girl showing off on the volley ball court.
Cate was going through her normal routine of getting the kids off to school and cleaning up the house when someone knocked at the door. It was Split Thomas coming by to check on how the family was doing. He had been hitting on Cate for a couple of years, but she wasn't having any of it. So, they had become "just good friends". This was driving Split crazy but Cate seemed to get a kick out of it.
Come in, said Cate trustingly.
How's it going, said Split?
Not so great today. The kids are complaining about money again. They are getting older but not quite old enough to get a job. I don't know what to do.
I might have an idea for you. I need someone to do some breeding and marketing of a new strain of guppies I've developed. I just want to test market them at local pet stores. I'm sure its something the boys could handle and it would be a lot of fun for them. You should be able to market them for anywhere from fifty cents to a dollar apiece.
Cate laughed and said, you've got to be crazy.
No, I'm serious. You know I've always had guppies since I was a kid. Believe it or not, there is a very good reason why I've been developing this strain of blue guppies. You've seen them. Don't you think they are a great color?
Sure, but what makes you think they would buy them at a pet store?
Because they would be able to sell them fast and for a lot more money. That's just basic capitalism at work. You should give the kids a chance to learn these lessons at a young age. They will love earning their own money. You don't want them to grow up to be bums do you, Split said as he ducked around the corner into the kitchen? He knew what was coming next.
What do you mean? My kids aren't bums, said Cate as her temperature started to rise. She was getting ready for one of those "all too familiar arguments," that she always gets into with Split.
I know. But you've got to get them off into the right direction or they will learn their survival skills on the street and you know that means drugs. You don't want that for them do you? Split started munching on Cates' snacks that she had prepared for the kids for later when they came home.
Now don't get cute. You know I don't want that for them, Cate said with a small tear in her eyes. She new that drug dealing was a very big possibility for her kids in the near future. They really didn't have any role models around them to stop it. Don't be eating all the kids' snacks.
Well, I'll stop by sometime in the next couple of days with a start up aquarium for them. The worst that can come of it is some pet fish for them to enjoy. I think they'll like the idea once I show them the numbers and explain how to maximize their profit. Kids always like earning money. (I) They have to be discouraged by adults to ever stop enjoying it. This should take some of the pressure off you. Now every time they ask for money, all you have to do is start asking them how they are doing with their guppy business?
Ya sure. Now get out of here so I can get my work done, Mr. Guppyman, said Cate with a giggle. She knew this was a good plan. She really likes all kinds of pets, so she knew at least the place would look better with a new aquarium in it. See ya later, as Split, split.
Tuti Lunga was checking out the fence line at the crimedos when she saw a funny looking white dude getting ready to come through the gates. She thought she had better check this out. He might be undercover or maybe just another customer. Either way, she was going to find out. This was her turf and she planned on keeping it that way. Usually only guys knew how to be street dealers. The girls were stuck with becoming holes to survive but somehow she gained the respect of the local gang members and bluffed her way into this territory.
Split walked up to the gate wondering what kind of condition the condominiums, he had traded for, were in.
Just then a good looking black girl came up to him and just kind of gave him the once over land said, what can I do for you?
Hi! My names Split and I'm looking for 2805 and 2935. Do you know where they are?
Maybe, what do you need there, Tuti said not wanting to pass up some business if that's what he was looking for?
I just need to look at the places. I just bought them and I need to see what condition they are in, so that I can rent them out as soon as possible.
Sure follow me. You got the keys?
I hope so, said Split as he watched her cute little behind closely. She caught him looking and gave him a big grin. They both knew this wasn't going to end quickly.
What kind of a funny name is that handle you have, Split? Split what, she said while noticing that the whole neighborhood was watching their every movement? She needed to get control of this sucker and work him. He looks like some kind of high- styling hippie with pink skin and brown spots. Wouldn't my mother just die if I brought him home?
Well, that's a long story. Maybe I'll tell you about it later. What's your name, said Split as they approached the first condo?
Tuti! And that's a long story too, she said as she checked out his booty as he wiggled it while inserting the key into the lock.
It looks like we'll have to get together later and swap name stories, he said as he started to look through the apartment. Hey! This place isn't bad at all. It looks like somebody took real good care of it. Do you know anybody that is looking for a place? I'm asking five hundred dollars a month for it. What do you think?
The wheels started turning in Tuti's head. This could be the ticket she's been looking for. Well, I might be interested if the deposit isn't too high.
How high is too high for you, he asked knowingly? Maybe two hundred, but I couldn't give it to you right now.
When could you?
I can give you the rent now, but you'll have to wait a few hours for the deposit.
Sounds great to me, said Split as he stood there looking at Tuti in disbelief.
Good! Here's the five hundred, she said as she reached into her pockets and pulled out the cash. There was a lot more than five hundred and she wondered if he would catch onto why.
Here's the key. do you need some help moving in? Don't pull any tricks on me. I've seen them all and I know how to handle them, he said as he was noticing all the extra cash this lady had. You must have a good job?
Ya, I do. I work at Rohr Industries she said, which was true but definitely not the main source for this kind of money. It looks like he believed her for now. Alright!
They walked over to the other condo to check it out physically. As they were walking Split was thinking how he could use the high energy of this gal in a positive way. She obviously was into heavy street dealing. Perhaps he could use her in the I.C.P. membership drive. Little did he know what a key person she would become in saving the Blue Guppy from total extinction. For now, he would just test her business acumen. As they walked into the other condo he asked her if she knew anyone that could use this apartment and if so, he would make her a deal where she would become a partner with him in the ownership of this unit.
Probably, she said suspiciously. How much money would I need to buy into this apartment?
A couple thou, and you can pay it over time, he said.
I'll think about it, she said. Good, I have some tickets to the Padre's game tonight. Do you want to come with me? We can talk about it more.
Sure! What time?
I'll pick you up about five o'clock, OK?
Ya, that would be good. I'll be at the front gate and I'll have the rest of the money, she said as they were leaving the condo. Boy, what a strange honky this white boy is, she was thinking as she walked him to the gate.
Split was thinking about the new strain of Blue Guppies that he was trying to develop and was wondering if today's batch would be what he needed. He had been getting close for a long time. These babies could prove to be the solution to many bothersome problems that have been plaguing the I.C.P. for a long time. He noticed, once again, the many eyes that were following the both of them. Somehow, he felt protected by this little black girl. Could she really have that much power in her community? He'd soon find out. She sure is a cute one.
We will definitely have a blast tonight. I'll see you at five Tuti, I'm looking forward to it. Bye, he said as he waived to her and noticed that the crowd was already gathering around her to get the latest scoop on the visitor.
Split heard a roar of laughter from inside the crimedoes as he entered his truck. It looks like they've already figured him for a chump and Tuti was telling them how she had gotten over on the Honky. Good for her. That's just what he wanted them to think. That shows she a smart gal. She had sense enough not to say no to him when he was offering her a good deal. That meant she trusted her own judgment. Enough of this. He had to meet with his attorney, "Ralph Binski," to discuss the legal protection of his new strain of guppies.
Split drove to the offices of Feldman, Feldman and Conners for his appointment with Ralph Binski. He had screened many young attorneys before he settled on Ralph. He gave him just enough information on what he was planning and a copy of his book. When he had determined that Ralph was willing to become a "Warrior Attorney," he had to brief him further and warn him that his whole life style would be attacked by his peers. The first thing that would happen, would be that he would be fired from his present firm. This first assignment should begin without too much fuss but shortly he would have to tackle the big boys. They definitely wouldn't sit still for most of his plans but the bait had to be set properly. This would be a major step in finding out if he really had a committed attorney or just a wanna be.
Split introduced himself to the receptionist and told her he had an appointment with Ralph. She confirmed the appointment and told him that Mr. Binski would be right out.
Hello, Mr. Thomas. I hope you are ready to fill me in today. Just follow me to the conference room and I'll take some notes, said Ralph as he led Split down the hall to the conference room. They both shook hands and sat down.
Ralph, as you know I've been doing some genetic work with rare guppies. We've had several major breakthroughs in the last couple months and I'm reasonable sure that the last group of babies have most of the elements in them that we set out to accomplish. To recap a little, The Humanarium Corporation deals exclusively with biosphere technology. We are searching for commercial uses of high technology that can also be used to develop the humanarium models. (A) It's always best if we can find a multi-purpose use for any of the products that we develop. For instance, the skin of the biosphere or walls, if you want to call them that, are really two sheets of clear plastic filled with water. Plastic has proven to be a bad outer wall material in residential use because of the toxicity of the fumes during a fire. What we've done by having a layer of water between the two sheets of plastic is create a fireproof plastic wall system. (E) We are trying to find more uses for the wall system. It was obvious that we had created a skinny aquarium. What we needed were small hearty fresh water fish that were both attractive and good to eat. We chose the Guppy because of its easy maintenance and its beautiful coloring of the male. What we had to do was determine a totally self-contained and maintained ecosystem that could also be a continuing source of food for the inhabitants. We heard about a new computer science technique where they make the chip and small parts out of microscopic organic materials. (F) We've been breeding the guppies for color, taste and we've been giving them injections of genetic material that would develop into a preprogrammed implant that they would pass onto their offspring. I think we have succeeded in every count and now it's time for us to reveal our findings to the public. We need your help in the legal department.
Split, we can protect you with a patent on the process but the best we can do with the new breed of guppy is copyright a name for it. I don't know if that will be good enough for your plans or not, said Ralph as he twisted in his seat.
The problem we might have with this breed is the politicians. They've already gotten wind of the general concept and they are laying in wait to regulate it from several different direction. Because of genetic implications, they want to keep the process within the governments control. Who knows what sinister plans they could put this miniature computer implant to. There is also a group of environmentalists that might sell out to a politician to gain control of the distribution of the Guppy. This could cause a direct attack on our personal liberties. Can you imagine what they could do if they got public sympathy behind them. They did it before with a man made rat in Riverside County. Nobody fought back and they rendered thousands of acres useless. That was just the beginning. Do you think we should go underground with the whole project or is there no way we can do it legally and still end up with any resemblance of a eco-building system that we wanted for the Humanarium Model, said Split with a worrisome look on his face?
I think that you will have to keep this as quiet as possible, for as long as possible, until you have completed the total project. Then, you should make it public through the press with the concurrent filings with government. Be prepared with an international plan so that local government power freaks don't kill the project before you can complete it. All you have to do is maintain that you haven't done all your testing and you aren't required to report anything. Start a small group of distributors on a test market basis and make sure that you are the only one that knows each distributor personally. If you are infiltrated, be sure and have nothing in writing that would be used against you. Get a top person in the field to open a pet store specializing in tropical fish. Use this front to disperse the product as widely as possible. I think I can find a reliable scientist that would be interested in this project. We went to school together. He majored in genetics and was always complaining to me about how the government was over-regulating the genetics field. They were treating it like a top secret weapon and using the worst kinds of tactics to scare the public. I used to think he was exaggerating but I have been following the subject over the last few years and he was completely right. I'm sure he would join us. His name is Bob Singleton and I'll have him give you a call. You two should work well together. Is there anything else that we haven't covered, said Ralph as he started to put away some of his notes?
There are a few things we can cover later but I get the general idea. I had a feeling that this was the path we would have to take. I've already started. Good work Ralph, said Split as he rose to leave. Our next meeting should be at the research center so that you can see what we are talking about. Try to have Bob Singleton there with you. Let's try for next Sunday. That would give us more time to go over some of the details. Do you think you can make it on the weekend like that? Sure! That's a good idea. I have a full calendar next week, so this would give me a opportunity to get acquainted with your project. I'll make sure that Bob is there too, said Ralph as he shook Splits hand. I'll see you Sunday. Call me before, to set the exact time and place to meet. O.K. You have a good week, Split said as he entered the elevator. We'll be ready for you.
Shekay watched in amazement as the baby guppies separated into two groups and enter the proper areas. She couldn't believe it. Not a single one was eaten by any of the full grown fish. This meant that a maximum harvest could be counted on with each birth. She knew that now they could program the entire wall system of any Humanarium Model and have a complete ecosystem that could be counted on indefinitely. This was a major breakthrough. She started wondering how Split was doing with the attorney. She guessed that there would be formidable obstacles ahead with the development and marketing of the new systems. Her next task was to bring some of the last generation specimens to Guy Wolfburg. He had compiled quite small fish cook book. She had tried some of his concoctions and had to admit that one wouldn't get bored with his recipes. He somehow had been able to make the fish taste like other forms of meat. He had developed a blender that computerized the processing and flavoring of the fish. He said that small fish where a great advantage because they didn't require human labor to process them, especially ones that knew how to separate themselves and goo to the proper location within a system. He had a hard time believing that there were small organic computers inside each fish but he realized there was no other explanation for the natural instinct of a fish to be so altered. He was now testing the final prototype to make sure that there were no negative problems involved with the ingestion of these fish by humans. It seemed just the opposite. The nutritional value seemed to enhance the normal diet. The only way these fish could be bad for you, would be if you only ate them fried all the time.
Shekay picked up one of the containers of all large female specimens to take to Guy's lab. She knew that soon these fish would swim to a location and be processed at the touch of a button, but for now she had to deliver them.
As she entered Guy's lab, she noticed that there seemed to be something wrong. She went over to the aquarium that she knew was designated for this batch and started to empty the fish into it. Just then, Guy startled her by coming out from behind one of the cabinets. She almost spilled the fish onto the floor. Guy, don't sneak up on me like that. You scared the hell out of me, she said as she finished emptying the fish into the aquarium.
Someone has been stealing specimens from us. Otherwise they are continuing to be cannibalistic. We are going to have to increase the security around here and place twenty four hour a day videos on both the lab and the guppies to determine which scenario is the problem. How many people have access to this facility, asked Guy as he studied the new batch of guppies?
I don't know for sure. You'll have to ask Split. He phoned and said he would be up here Sunday. It couldn't be too many people. Do you want me to start setting up the new security measures or do you want to it yourself, she said as she moved closer to Guy? It always seemed hard to get him to take his mind off his work, for even a minute, to pay some attention to her. She wasn't sure that it was a good idea that they had become lovers recently. He seemed more distant then he used to be when they were at work together.
No! I'll take care of it, but you should call Split and let him know about the problem. He might have some idea of what to do about it. In the meantime, I'll get some cameras setup. Don't tell anyone about the problem, except for Split. We don't want anyone to know about it yet. Be sure to call Split from a pay phone. If we are having some kind of industrial or political espionage going on here, we will have to play it by the book. I was hoping that we wouldn't be noticed by anyone for awhile yet. I like working under a more relaxed atmosphere. I've already had years of the cloak and dagger stuff and quite frankly, it's hard on everyone's nerves, Guy said as he moved away from Shekay's advances. He really enjoyed her, but every time she came around him now it broke his concentration. He almost wished he had never pursued her so hard. She sure looked beautiful today.
I've got to go check the computers to see what the numbers are for today. We need to have enough of the fish ready to start a general marketing scheme by next week. I think we have enough of the older fish so that we can hit the target date. Split was checking with the attorney today to see just what plan of action we should take. Sunday should be real interesting. Are you going to be here, she asked as she was leaving for lab?
I wouldn't miss it. Let me know what Split has to say as soon as you find out, Guy said while adjusting one of the control knobs on his automatic fish processing machine.
Sure! I'll catch you later, she yelled from down the hall. She was going to make it a point to see him after work with the message from Split. This would be a good opportunity to get him alone without his mind so much on work. Maybe this intrigue would be more fun and bring them closer together. He sure seems to be into it, she said to herself. She went back to the lab, checked the numbers on the computer, so that she could give them to Split when she called. Then she pressed the timer button and prepared to leave. As she was leaving, she noticed a car approaching the building. She decided to wait and see who it was. As the car got closer, the driver seemed to notice her and started to speed up. It just circled the area and then started down the hill. She noticed that it had State license plates. She wondered which agency was checking them out this time. It gave her a bit of a chill down the back of her spine. Could Guy be right about someone breaking in and what would they want with fish? If they didn't know what to look for, there would be very little chance of them knowing what was going on in the lab. Maybe she was just being paranoid. After a few minutes she got into her car and headed home. First, she had to make a stop at a public phone and call Split. She spotted one at the market and headed toward it. She noticed that the car she had seen was also parked next to the market. She decided to just pick up some groceries and make the call at a different location. After she left the market, she went to a local gas station to get some gas and make her call. This time she looked around and didn't see the car. After getting the gas, she went to the phone and called Split.
Hello, Split said.
Split, this is Shekay, We had a problem today in Guy's lab. There were several fish missing. He isn't sure whether it's because the insert is failing or whether someone has stolen the guppies. He asked me to call you from a pay phone and see what you make of it.
You did good. Tomorrow, take a batch of guppies from the same group home with you. Place them in a container that wouldn't be noticeable as a fish tank. Monitor these fish to see if they are eating each other. Did Guy say anything about better security measures, Split said as he was driving down interstate 5? He realized that his line wasn't secure, so he had better make a code call to Guy later on that evening.
Yes. He wants to install more security. Do you want me to give him some instructions, she said as she noticed the strange government car driving slowly by?
Tell him to be at our old watering hole at eight this evening. I'll call him from a secure phone and give him further instructions. It looks like the plan is beginning to take shape. I need to talk to both of you in depth on Sunday when I come up there with the attorney. I'll also be introducing both of you to a possible new associate. Let's not talk anymore. Keep your eyes and ears open for anything strange between now and then. I'll see you Sunday, good-bye Shekay, he said as he turned into Cate's driveway.
Both of the boys where in the driveway playing ping pong with the upstairs neighbors, Bob and Sue. They seemed like a real nice couple. Maybe he could get them involved in selling the fish, if it worked for the boys. They could probably use the extra money. He would talk to Bob about it but first he needed to deliver the guppies to Cate. Yanon was playing Bob and it looked like he was taking a beating. Bob was trying to give him some pointers, when he noticed Split driving into the driveway. This caused him to miss a shot. Yanon and even both squealed with delight. They weren't used to seeing Bob miss a shot.
Look what you made me do Split. I thought you weren't going to stop in time. How ya been, Bob said as he chased after the ball behind Split's car.
Great. I've brought an aquarium for the boys. I think they will enjoy it. After I've set it up, I'll challenge you to a game. The kids say you are a great player. I'll just have to try you out. What do you say, Split said as he opened the back of the truck to get out the aquarium and the fish?
Why not? You won't have a chance but, I'll be here anyway, Bob said jokingly.
Hey Even! How about giving me a hand with some of this stuff. Where's your mother, Split said as he handed Even the gravel and top to the aquarium?
She's in the house fixing dinner. We're having fish. She said we're having that because of you. I guess it's because of the guppies you promised us, Even said as he bobbled the top and almost dropped it.
She isn't fixing fried guppies is she, he said in a very serious voice?
Yuk! She better not be. I'm going to eat them, Even said as he noticed the twinkle in Split's eyes and realized he had been teasing. No, I think it's gold fish, he countered while holding back a big chuckle.
Well, I hope she knows how to spice them. Gold fish can be pretty tricky, he said as he entered the apartment. So where is Miss Goldfish?
Hi Split! Wait a minute. I'm in the middle of something, she said as she checked the Maui Maui with a fork.
Don't rush it. I know how difficult it is to cook goldfish, he said while winking at Even and putting the tank down on the floor. I'll go out and get the stand for the tank and I'll be right back.
Cate came out of the kitchen with a puzzled look on her face. What did Split say, Even?
Oh, nothing Mom. Where do you want the fish, Even said while looking through the aquarium parts?
Put it against the wall between the chairs, she said as she went back into the kitchen to prepare the rest of the meal.
Split came back with the stand and a plastic bag filled with Blue Guppies. Where does she want it, he asked Even?
Between the chairs. Let me see the Guppies, he asked as he moved to get them from Split. Split handed them to him. For the first time Even, understood why Split was so interested in these fish. They were a florescent blue color with tails almost twice the size of their bodies. He wondered what it was that he and Yanon where suppose to do with them. Split placed the stand in the right spot and then put the tank on top of it. He told Even to get some containers and fill them with room temperature water from the sink. Just then Yanon and Bob came in to see what was going on.
Can we help you, said Yanon?
Sure. Get some containers and fill them with room temperature water and help us fill the tank. Bob, maybe you could get some from upstairs and Yanon you could get some from the bathroom. Very quickly they had the tank filled. Split floated the plastic bag full of guppies in the water. Even asked why he didn't just let the guppies go in the water?
For two reasons. They have to stay in the bag until the chlorine evaporates or until we treat the water and because the water temperature is different. We'll be able to let them go in a few hours. How about a quick game of Ping Pong before I have to leave, he said looking at Bob?
You asked for it, Bob said as he turned to go out the door towards the Ping Pong table.
Yanon, don't feed the fish until I come back tomorrow. I'll explain everything then. Let the fish out in about two hours. O.K., Split said as he walked out the door? Yanon just nodded. He was fascinated just watching the fish. The two men had a quick game of Ping Pong. It was obvious that Bob was a very good player. He beat Split easily.
Good game. I enjoyed it. Tell Cate and the boys that I'll be back tomorrow to show them what needs to be done with the guppies, Split said as he headed for his truck. I'll see you then.
Bob waved and headed back into Cates' apartment. When he got inside he said to Yanon; why is Split always in such a hurry? He doesn't ever seem to stay anywhere very long.
I don't know. Maybe that's why he's called Split. They both laughed, but that did make some sense and they both knew it. Cate was listening and kind of grinning because she had to agree that for as long as she had known Split, it seemed that he was always on the move. She often wondered where he was off to, but she knew he would be back the next day. He seemed to always be around when she needed help or advice.
Split looked at his watch and could see that he was going to have to count on good traffic conditions, if he was going to make it in time for his date with Tuti. When he reached the gates, he saw her immediately. She walked over to his with a cocky little smile on her face. She was definitely full of mischief. This was going to be fun.
How ya doing, she said as she opened the truck door and slid in beside him? The first thing she did was put her hand on his thigh to throw him off balance. It worked. Split almost hit a car making a U-turn and she giggled a little. Watch out. You don't want to get us killed before we can have some fun do you, she said with a knowing smile?
Definitely not, Split said as he tried to wiggle from under her hand. He was getting excited and a little nervous. Was she going to proposition him? If so, then he had misread her. What did you have in mind Tuti, he said as he hit the on-ramp going to the Stadium?
I thought we were going to a ball game, she said with that same great smile she used on anyone when she wanted her way.
That's right. I hope you like baseball, he said.
No. I don't, but I'll make an exception this time. I've never been to a ball game. I'll make sure we have fun, she said as she flirted with him.
Split didn't know what to make of this direct approach she was taking with him. He was soon to find out why she was named Lunga. They went to the game, but it wasn't long before it became obvious that Tuti wasn't interested in the action on the playing field. She had something else on her mind, so Split bought them a couple beers. They went outside on a porch-type walkway with a great view down Mission Valley to the ocean. It was just at sunset and the colors in the sky were magical. Split didn't know if he should break the spell by asking her for the additional two hundred dollars or was she trying to get over and not have to pay. After they had done a little more "bill and cooing." Split decided to break the spell and see where she was coming from.
Tuti, did you remember to bring the rest of the money? I'd better give you the key before I forget, he said trying to not be too heavy about the money.
Sure, I remembered it, but you're going to have to earn it tonight by breaking in my new apartment, she said as she started to maul his manhood. Besides, you already gave me the key. There was no more doubt in Split's mind. In fact, there wasn't much of anything that wasn't X-rated on his mind at this time. It was definitely time to leave the game and head for the apartment. He would have to have a more serious talk with her when ever she settled down. He decided he wasn't going to rush into business with her until after she got what she wanted from him. He had already decided to invite her to the Saturday night party that he was invited to. That's where he could test out her savvy with the politically elite. If she is as street wise in that situation as she obviously was in her own element, then she would be a potent weapon for the I.C.P. As they drove into the condo complex, Split remembered he had to make a call at eight to Guy, in Hemet, at the Red Dog Saloon. He told Tuti, that they would have to be through in about an hour, so he could make the call.
No problem, she said, but first let's stop at my friends house and get a blanket and some smoke.
I can't get high tonight. The call was too important and besides I don't need it. You've got me going plenty without any artificial stimulants he said.
She started to get a little suspicious again. Is this guy for real or not? This is really great stuff she said.
I believe you and after my call maybe I'll try some but not until then, he said as he pulled up to her friends apartment, that she had pointed towards. She got out and knocked on her friends door. A tough looking guy answered and said that Tracy was in the back room He also asked her if she was with a cop. She could tell that this was going to be a reoccurring problem with her friends if she continued to see Split. She went into the back room and gave her friend a big hug and told her what she needed. She told her what her plans were and that she would tell her all about it later. She was back in the car in about five minutes.
All right, let's go big boy, she said as she moved closer to Split. She quickly told Split about the conversation and the curiosity of her friends.
Split just laughed and said that they were quite a pair of oddballs. She hadn't seen anything yet. Wait until the party Saturday night. That's right Tuti, I almost forgot to ask you. Can you come to a beach party with me Saturday night, he asked?
That depends on what happens in the next few minutes, she said trying to keep his mind on her seduction scene.
I'm not worried about that and don't you, he said as he pulled up to Tuti's new apartment. They both got out and he gave her another key while looking at her with a silly grin. All right lady, what about the money first he said in a semi-serious voice? If you are going to treat me like a pro then you'll have to play your part.
She opened the door and carefully placed the blanket down on the living room floor. She reached into her pocket and got out the two hundred dollars and started to hand it to him. She pulled back and said mustily, now you are going to find out about Tunga Lunga. She laid down on the blanket and reached up with the money to give him. When he reached for it she grabbed his arm and pulled him down between her legs. It's Tunga Lunga time she said. That was the last thing said between them for about forty five minutes. (1) Exhausted and spent, Tuti sat up and asked Split if the invitation was still on for Saturday night?
That's for sure, he said as he rose and offered her his hand to help her up. I'll pick you up here at about six and we'll go to dinner first. Do you like Chinese food?
I sure do. Can you drop me off at Tracy's house on your way out, she said as she headed for the truck?
You've got it. Are you going to be all right? Have you got some friends to help you move in, he said as he opened the door of the truck for her?
No problem. You'll like the way I fix up the apartment. By the way, I think I have a couple of girlfriends that would rent the apartment from us, that is if the deal you were talking about earlier is still on between us, she said as she reached over to kiss him goodnight.
Great! Tell them they can move in Sunday. We'll interview them Saturday night at your place, when I come to pick you up. Can you have them there, he said as she was leaving the truck to go to Tracy's house?
They'll be there. I had a great time Split. I'll see you Saturday night, she said as she walked up to Tracy's door and waved.
See ya later, he said as he began to drive off. He looked at his watch and realized he only had ten minutes before he had to make his call to Guy. He headed towards Mission Valley to Bully's restaurant. He needed something to eat and that would be a good place to make his call. Inside Bully's he asked for a seat close to the phone and got it. He placed the call to the Red Dog Saloon and immediately got Guy on the phone.
Split, is that you, Guy said as he was handed the phone by the bartender?
It's me. Can you talk, Split said as he looked around to see if anyone was paying attention to his conversation. There didn't seem to be anyone within hearing distance and they all looked busy with their dates.
It's cool. Did Shekay fill you in on the problem, Guy said as he motioned for another drink to the bartender?
Sort of, but I didn't want to talk too much on my car phone. I think I've been followed on and off lately. Maybe not, but this whole thing is coming to a head and I don't want it falling apart at this point. We have got to be extremely careful from now on. I'm glad your background has trained you for this kind of thing. I'm going to be relying on you for a lot of assistance in making sure we pull this off. What have you done so far, Split asked?
I had Shekay take home some of the fish from the same group that had some missing and I did the same. We were very careful not to be obvious about it. We set up the tanks with an alarm system to let us know if anyone messes with it. I've placed hidden video cameras all over the place and especially on the tanks. We'll find out if the fish were stolen or eaten. It's too bad we didn't do this earlier. Do you really think they could already be that concerned, Guy said as he reached for his drink?
I think anything is possible and from now on that's the way we are going to treat it. Consider the project on full alert. This Saturday I'm going to a party. I may be able to get a better reading as to whether or not our political friends are concerned yet or not. I'm coming up Sunday. I want you to be there from twelve on. I don't know exactly when we'll be there yet, but probably sometime after two. Try to get everything ready for a demonstration. I'll be bringing the lawyer and one of his friends that speaks your language. He's a genetic expert. I hope he works out because then we can set him up and use him as a front. Do you need anything from San Diego, asked Split as he noticed two men coming in the front entrance? They hadn't noticed him yet, but he thought it best to end this conversation as soon as possible.
No, I don't need anything except; maybe, some piece of mind. I thought I was through with all this stuff when I left "The Company". You have a good time Saturday and try to stay out of trouble, said Guy playfully. He knew that Split considered himself available to any pretty face. He wished that he would settle down a bit. Now that there is a cure, it seems that everybody remembers the moves just like it was yesterday, he said as he took another big swig of his drink.
Trouble is what I'll be avoiding, but if it comes my way I'll bottle some and bring it up to you. Seriously, be thinking of a master plan and so will I. We'll compare notes and run it past the lawyer if we feel comfortable with his friend. I've got to hang up now. I'll se ya Sunday, Split said and then hung up just as the two men noticed him. It seemed that they took an extra good look at him before they started to talk to each other. Maybe he would try to lay a little trap for them to see if it wasn't just hi imagination. Not tonight though. He would just remember their faces and if he saw them again he would take action. He was through for the night and he needed some sleep. He had only two days to do some thorough checking on several people that are key players in his plan. He needed to make sure of who he was dealing with and where they stood. He knew this wouldn't be an easy process.
The next day Ned Cole met with a group of scientist and environmentalist that had been recommended to him by his staff. Included in the meeting were some of the big media names that already had a track record of finding and successfully stopping businesses from destroying certain habitats of endangered species. In some cases it was justified and in others they were politically manipulated. This group didn't care which was the case. They were only interested in the saving of endangered species. In most cases they didn't even know what the political or economical implications of their actions were. This was particularly important for Ned because he only had to be sure of his scientific facts. He could then cash in on the political and financial benefits of halting certain activities that were deemed necessary by this esteemed committee. The rest of the pieces would automatically fall into place, or so he arrogantly thought.
The group came up with several species. It seemed rather remote as to the effect the saving of them would have on any particular type of irreplaceable habitat. Most of these could be saved without very many changes in land use. He needed something more sensational. He asked them if they were checking on anything unusual. He promised them help on each of the species that they requested. They told him of some research that was going on with a new strain of fish that had been written up in several scientific journals. They had been trying to get more information on the species but the lab that was working on it was not forthcoming about the nature of the work. They were concerned because the implications of unusual secrecy indicated that there could be all sorts of genetic designing involved. The people doing the research were very hostile to normal industry and government regulations. The new breed was being sponsored by the I.C.P.
They informed him that they had managed to obtain a few specimens several days ago. They were trying to analyze them now to see what was different. So far, they had only determined that the fish were a new breed of guppy with a particularly beautiful male specimen. They doubted that this was the only difference. They had the whole project under surveillance and they were coordinating their information with several government agencies.
Ned knew immediately, when he heard that the I.C.P. was involved, that this could be just the issue the congressman needed. The I.C.P. was a new upstart political organization that was challenging many of the old guard's sacred cows. He figured this would be easy pickings. Sid would get his security people working on it and probably have a plan of action ready in time for the Saturday party. Sid was always more effective in persuading people at a party. He didn't know exactly how Sid's magic worked, but he had seen it work over and over again. He had become his number one fan. Ned felt that this deal could really make a difference in his career. Sid kept telling him to look for the big score. You only needed one to make your reputation grow, he'd always said.
After the meeting broke up, Ned called Sid and told him the good news. Sid already knew Split Thomas and had purposely invited him to the Saturday party. He had no idea at the time that he would be their next political target. He had invited him because he was a political curiosity and a scandalous bachelor. Now Split would be more than just a fill-in at the party. What a strange turn of events. Of course, he had the perfect set-up for pumping information from the unsuspecting split. The beautiful Reta Bailey would be used as bait. She loved these kinds of assignments and an eligible bachelor would just make it more interesting for her. As soon as Sid finished his call with Ned, he immediately got Reta on the phone.
Reta, how are you doll, he said when she answered the call?
Sid, don't tell me you have something fun for me to do again? What is it, a visiting official from Washington or a foreign businessman that you're trying to con, she said half-jesting?
Neither. Your assignment will be a local oddball politician that we need to get some information from. You must do it in an unsuspecting manner. Are you free Saturday night to come to a party at Congressman Bohm's apartment, he asked? I'm free Saturday night, but just how odd is this person, she said thinking that this was going to be quite a chore?
That's what we want you to find out with your incredible charm and wit, sweet- thing, he said teasing her a little. In fact, I want you to come over to my office as soon as you can and pick up his file. You'll need it, because we want you to get as much information on him as possible before the party. If you have a FAX or an E- mail address I'll send the file, otherwise pick it up at the desk. I will set up a short briefing during the party, in a casual manner, with the Congressman. Have your ducks in a row before then. Pay particular attention to his experiments with a new strain of guppies at the Humanarium complex.
What? Did you say Guppies?
That's what I said my dear. Guppies, Blue Deltas to be exact. He's doing some genetic engineering on them and we thing we can get some political mileage out of what he's trying to do. Up to now we don't know exactly what that is. That will be your job, to find out.
You've got to be kidding. This is the most bazaar assignment you've ever come up with. Is this a joke or something? I don't know anything about guppies, she said sure that Sid was putting her on.
This is no joke. Get some reading material about the fish and don't underestimate either the project or the person we want you to cover. Don't worry. You'll enjoy yourself, he said knowing how much Reta liked vamping for information.
Al right. I'll take your word for it. I'll be down in about an hour to pick up the file. I want a complete file, not a water-downed FAX copy. In the meantime I'll have my staff get me all the information ever written about guppies, she said sarcastically. This is unbelievable she thought to herself. She hung up with a short good-bye and called in her assistant and briefed him on her assignment.
She call Ned and he briefed her further. Reta only had two days to gather as much information as she could on both the fish and the person before the party Saturday. She found out that some Ned's contacts already had gotten several of the guppies from the Humanariums' lab. She needed to know everything that they had come up with and just how they managed to get into the lab. She also would try to call them off in the meantime so that it wouldn't arouse suspicion because of the missing specimens at the lab. She needed at least two pair of the guppies for her own research, but she planned on getting them from Split voluntarily if she could. She got the file from Sid's office and was pleasantly surprised by what she read. She felt a kind of kinship with some of the ideas that he profess to be supporting. It made her wonder why Sid and Ned were plotting against him. She thought that most of his ideas were pretty mainstream and that the congressman was also in tune with these concepts. What she read in the file disturbed her because of its lack of strangeness as professed by Sid. She also checked out his web site. Now she knew this was going to be an interesting assignment after all. What she couldn't figure out was what anyone wanted with the Blue Guppies. How could they be so important?
She made the necessary calls to set everything in motion and then settled down to read about the guppies. She found it interesting that fancy guppies were one of the first genetic experiments ever started just for the purpose of checking out genetic theories. This had taken place in Germany about one hundred years ago. Basically these were man-made strains of fish. She also read about the competitions that were held by guppy fanciers and how expensive some of these prize fish were. There didn't seem to be too much detail in learning about them and in the end she came to the same conclusion that Sid and his men did. It didn't seem very likely that the I.C.P. would spend this much attention on guppies just to win a prize. There had to be more to it. She started to make a list of possible scenarios but found that she couldn't list anything that made sense. Breed for color, breed for size, breed for a prize winner. This was really strange.
She received a call from one of Ned's people that told her they would lay off surveillance for awhile. Besides, they were coming up blank and an inside job was definitely called for in this situation. They also told her that one of the females had already had babies and that they would give her some tomorrow. They couldn't give her any full grown ones because they only had the minimum amount needed for their research They told her that she could expect full cooperation from them in any of their findings, but had nothing to report. They suggested that she do her own independent research. Maybe her people would come up with a new approach. With only a couple days to work on this project, she decided to do most of her immediate research on Split Thomas and leave the fish to the experts. She was to present her plan of infiltration to the congressman. He in turn would give her some direction and a plan on Saturday night.
Meanwhile Split wasn't letting any grass grow under his feet either. He decided to go on to the Net and check out the articles that had been written about Congressman Bohme. He wanted to find out why he had been invited to this party Saturday night. He didn't know if there was any linkage or not. He wanted to check out some of his cronies and distracters. What he did, was go through the articles, extract the names of anyone connected with him to see if he knew any of them. He didn't have direct computer access to sensitive Government files, so he had to do it the old fashioned way. Besides, he knew that they monitored computer access and he might tip them off without realizing it. This way was safer but less effective. After he completed his search and made copies of things he wanted to evaluate later, he headed over to Cate's house. The boys should be getting home about this time and he wanted to see if they would be interested in setting up a guppy business. When he got to Cate's house he knocked and Even answered the door.
How's things Even, he said?
Oh Kay, I guess, he said kind of unhappily.
You don't sound like you mean that. What's the matter? Some trouble at school, he queried?
No, I'm just bored. There's nothing to do and no money to do it with. What are you up to?
I came to ask you and Yenon a few questions. Is he around somewhere, he asked just as Cate came in from visiting her neighbors with Yenon following behind her?
Split! Give me a hug. Are you going to stay for dinner for a change, she asked looking at him in a loving way?
How can I resist that, he said a bit surprised? What has you in such a good mood?
I don't know. It's just that I somehow think things are going to change for better, she said knowing that he was going to give the kids a pep talk tonight about how to make some extra money. I'm making some taco's tonight. How does that sound?
Double good. In fact, Mexico is one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. Remember that special ranch I told you my friend has in Ensenada?
You mean "The Gringo"?
Yep. I've got to see him concerning some business, not this weekend but next weekend. Do you think you might want to come down there with me, he said with a hopeful look in his eye?
Maybe. I'll have to find someone to take care of the kids, she said with a cure grin on her mug.
Don't worry about that. If you can't find anybody to take them, we can always take them to the pound for the weekend, he said knowing that she was actually considering his offer for the first time. I wonder what got into her he thought. He'd asked her out a hundred times and she had just said that she wasn't dating at the present time. He was fairly sure that she was kidding, but maybe not. It could be, that his ploy of bringing over his dates lately to meet her, telling his dates that they were just good friends, had finally made her a little jealous and peaked her interest in him, somewhat. He wasn't sure, so he decided to bring Tuti by this Saturday night if possible, just in case.
You have your talk with the boys and I'll fix dinner. Do you want a beer, she said walking into the kitchen?
Sure. Thanks! How are the guppies doing guys, he asked the kids as he turned to look at the aquarium?
They seem alright, Yanon said as he sat down in the chair next to the fish.
Believe it or not, you can make a lot of money with these fish, if you do it right. Not millions, but enough to get you some of the things you want. I know you both have friends into drugs that are making big dollars for kids your age, but they are going to have to pay the price one day and its not going to be pretty when they do. So, please keep in mind we are dealing in smaller numbers at first, but the money will be earned in an honest way. If you watch your money closely and put some of it to work for you. The results will amaze you if you stick to it. I'll show you how to project the numbers. Just consider this your "How to make money" course. The difference is that if you pass the exams in this course, there will be more than just a grade waiting for you. Each week we will set a goal for leach of you based on the possible results. At first, you won't have to do much work. The guppies will do it all for you. I've given you ten females and five males to start with, even though the males aren't needed because the females are already filled with babies. Split went over to the box of supplies and brought out a book that told about the basics of raising fish. He showed them the part that told about live bearing fish. See where it gives you instructions on how to save the babies by using this special small floating aquarium with a slit in the bottom and space below to catch the babies. Normally you place a female with darkest spot on her underside in this and you can save a lot of the baby guppies from being eaten. The thing that is different about these very special blue guppies is that they are specially bred not to eat their babies. This means a lot less trouble in breeding them. You also get a lot more of the mature fish with less effort. This only works if all the fish in the tank are this new breed of guppy. You place any other kind of fish in there and you will lose a lot of baby fish. You guys understand, Split said as he looked into the tank to see which female was most likely to give birth next?
Ya, sure, but how did you make these fish not eat their babies, Yanon said as he too started to look into the tank?
That's top secret information and I don't want either of you to tell anyone. That's the reason you guys will be making a lot of money in a few years, if you handle this project properly. We have the only fish in the world that have changed their normal habits because of a technique that we used to control them. Someday I'll explain how we did it, he said just as he spotted a female about ready to explode. See this female over here, where I'm pointing, he said as the kids moved closer to the area he was pointing at. See the female with the very dark spot underneath?
Ya, its the one in the corner, Even said excitedly.
Do you see it Yanon, Split said?
Ah he. When will it have the babies, Yanon said?
Soon, very soon. What I want you guys to do is take shifts and watch this particular goofy. This way, you can see that I'm not telling you stories. Which one wants to go first, he said as he stood up?
I do, I do, they both said.
You can't both go first so we'll have Even take the first shift and Yanon can come with me for a few minutes. We'll be back in about ten minutes. Tell your mom. See ya in a bit, Split said as he and Yanon went out the door.
They both climbed into the truck and backed out of the driveway. As they did, Yanon asked where they were going?
We are looking for the closest location for a pet shop. Do you know if there is one close by, Split said as he stopped at a stop sign?

We are looking for the closest location for a pet shop. Do you know if there is one close by, Split said as he stopped at a stop sign?
No. I haven't seen one around here, Yanon said.
Good. That's even better. Let's head over to El Cajon Boulevard and see if we can spot any vacant shops, he said as he turned left onto El Cajon Boulevard. I'll look on the left and you look on the right.
There's one, Yanon said as Split slowed down to find a parking space.
I'll just get the telephone number. This is a perfect location. Split wrote down the number and then headed back to Cate's house. When they went in the front door, Even motioned them over to the aquarium.
She's having the babies right now, Even said as the two of them joined him.
Cate, come see this, Split yelled into the kitchen.
What's so important, she said as she came into the living room?
Watch, Mom. One of the guppies is having babies and none of the other fish are even trying to eat them, Yanon said already the professional guppy breeder.
So! she said.
Mom. These are special guppies. All other guppies eat their babies, said Yanon trying to reinforce the importance of his first statement.
I'm going to start eating my babies if they don't hurry up and wash their hands and get ready for dinner. Now come on. Everything is ready. You too Split, she said as she headed back into the kitchen, obviously not overly impressed by the new arrivals.
They all sat down and ate. During the meal, Split went over some of the plans he had for opening a pet store nearby. Cate wondered why he would go to all that trouble, just for some silly guppies. The boys were really getting into it. Split told them how they would be part of something incredible, if everything went alright. Once again, he warned them not to tell anyone about the behavior of the Blue Guppies. They promised and quickly ate their dinner.
Boy, you sure got their interest up. I haven't seen them this interested in anything in a long time, Cate said as she started to clear up the boys dishes.
They're good kids. I want to see them stay that way. You've done a great job with them, but now they are going to run into the rest of the world and you know what that means. If you can keep them busy and interested in something positive like earning money, then you'll have a good chance with them, Split said as he started to clear up his own mess.
So, when are we going to Mexico, Mr. Guppyman, she said.
The Friday after next. I'll pick you up about one o'clock and get you back here by Sunday evening. Have you found someone to watch boys, Split said not wanting to sound too anxious?
Bob and Sue have volunteered to take care of them. They've become good friends with the boys and I trust they, she said as she started to go into the other room to try to see what was so exciting about these guppies.
I'm going to come by Saturday evening with a friend I want you to meet, Split said as he followed her into the living room.
Another hot number, Eh, she said with a little false bravado, while wondering if she was going to end up just another conquest, instead of a good friend.
Ya, she's a hot number, but I think she might also be very helpful to me in the I.C.P. She has some special talents that I think I' m going to be needing if Shekay and Guy are right about what's happening in the lab, Split said with a concerned look on his face. Boys, I want you to pay particular attention to the number on new babies. See if you can count them. That's why the tank has white sand and rocks only. We want to find out if there is any possibility that they still eat a few of their babies. I'll be getting you a separate tank for the first group of babies next week. So, you think you can do that for me, he said?
No problem, Yanon said as he started to count the new arrivals.
I'll see you guys Saturday night. Have fun and take good care of your mom, he said as he started for the door.
Bye! Cate said and then turned her attention to the counting project.
Split decided to go to his hilltop house in Valley Center. He wanted to make sure that he wasn't being followed, so he took an evasive route. He had traded into this house as a preliminary staging ground for a lot of the biosphere experiments. He was testing some of the more conventional alternate energy sources and had already set up a situation where the gas and electric company was buying power from him, instead of the other way around. He was glad the PURPA laws were still in effect. He had installed state-of-the-art cogeneration, solar, wind and even on a small scale, hydraulic water systems. (A) The property was in a special land trust and title couldn't be traced back to him without him knowing who was trying to find him. Everything was very legal but designed for maximum security. He figured that this place would come in handy when they went public. He was pretty sure that he would need a safe-house for some of his members. Right now it would serve as a safe-house for a lot of the new breed of guppies. He had converted the swimming pool into a lily pond and was breeding as many Blue Guppies as possible. He also planned on breeding them in several other safe locations. That was one of the reasons for going down to the ranch and visiting "The Gringo" next week. He was sure that Tom would get a kick out of this project. Tom loved it whenever anyone was able to get over on the system. He was a true capitalist and a good friend. This train of thought got him to thinking about Cate. He felt a sudden rush in his groin. Was she really going for a weekend with him or was this just another tease? Either way, he knew that he would enjoy her company and that she would love the ranch and the people there. He couldn't have guessed how entirely right he would become. Cate would end up loving everything and everybody that had anything to do with Rancho Esplanade.
Split made his way to the house and was sure that he wasn't followed. Somehow he felt like he was going to his bat cave or something. He loved the mystery and intrigue involved in this project. Most of the I.C.P. projects were fairly straightforward and lacked this kind of adventure. His project tonight and most of tomorrow was to study the information he had collected about the congressman. Then he would formulate a plan that would give him the best chance of succeeding, when it came time to release the guppies on the World. He had to make sure that the method he used to program the guppies didn't fall into the wrong hands. He knew that if a power freak got a hold of his technique, that it would be used to control humans instead of guppies. This was the one great fear he had in developing this strain of fish. After the incident this week with the missing guppies, he had decided to install miniature transmitters in the grown fish. These were the same transmitters that the scientist had used in tracking the salmon and some of the other animals for various reasons. He had just made their physical specifications out of organic material so that the fish could be ingested by humans without any harm. If he could recoup the eight missing fish, he could be reasonable certain that they wouldn't get into the wrong hands. He knew that even a thorough exam of the fish wouldn't give anyone a clue. Someone would have to be told or guess, to even have a chance at figuring out what was different about the fish. Then they would have the problem of finding out how he did the process. (B)
He broke open the file he had made on the congressman. After reading it for awhile, he realized that the congressman was just your basic pragmatist. He just went with whatever issue was popular and could get him votes at the time. I guess that was fairly harmless, Split thought to himself. That means that he is looking into his lab for some kind of an issue. Split's wheels started turning. Maybe if he set him up with a false issue, the real one would go unnoticed until he was ready to release the information. He knew that Saturday night's party was where the action would begin.
Reta Bailey was home at this time doing basically the same thing Split was doing. She was trying to analyze all the information that her staff had given her so that she could come up with a plan of action. Nobody had found anything out about the guppies, except that they where a rare breed. After going over the information one more time she decided that her only course of action would be to gain Split's confidence quickly. Her problem would be, how to breach the subject with him without totally tipping her hand. This called for a total saturation plan. She would have to somehow get close enough to him that he would take her everywhere he went. That way, she would surely find something or someone that would tip her off.
Guy and Shekay were having dinner together. They were trying to figure out some strategy that they could present Split and his group at the Sunday meeting. They both agreed that the tracer transmitters should be installed in the mature fish. They also agreed, that the guppies should be spread out into as many safe places as possible and that there should be good security measures taken to make sure that another incident doesn't take place. The wall systems wouldn't be ready to market for about another three months and that meant that they had to keep the wraps on until then. (E) The problem was that every time they found a new location for the fish, it would mean having to trust someone new with the blue guppies. They needed to come up with some kind of a plan that would make these new recruits unaware of the importance of the project. They decided to recommend that the I.C.P. purchase a parcel of land that is both secluded and have access to a lot of water. Guy and Shekay would install the proper heating equipment and automatic feeders. Guy would set up security measures. What they needed most was a location that was close to one of the trusted members of the I.C.P. Maybe Split would have a suggestion. They finished their conversation and then, quietly with a few gentle signals, went off to bed together. They had become just like an old married couple reacting to this "all to familiar" scene. But once they got into bed, their true passions flared. (2)
THE PLANS
Saturday morning was fairly uneventful, except for the fact that Ralph Binski verified the Sunday meet with Split. He then made arrangements to pick up Bob Singleton at noon and then meet Split in Temecula at the Denney's restaurant off Interstate 15 at one o'clock. Split didn't want either of them to know of his Valley Center house yet. He needed to test their loyalty a little bit further. Besides, he wasn't sure where he would land Saturday night. He might end up in Tuti's place.
At around four, Split headed out from his hilltop fortress for the long drive to San Diego. He wondered if Cate and Tuti would get along well together. He hoped they would become friends because he needed both of them for his plans. He arrived at Tuti's front door right on time and she answered wearing a smashing white cowgirl outfit.
Boy, do you ever look hot tonight, he said as he gave her the once over.
I try, she said as she motioned Split into the condo and took his hand. She wanted to show off her place to him. How do you like it, she asked with a look of pride on her face?
Damn nice. You have good taste Tuti. Next time I visit you, I'll bring a house warming present for you, Split said thinking of this as another location for his blue guppies. Are you ready to go?
How about a little tunga lunga first, she said as she guided him into the bedroom? Split didn't answer. He just followed her orders. He was wondering how often she needed tunga lunga. They melted onto the bed. (3)
A few minutes later they heard a knock on the door and Tuti got up to answer it. You just stay here Split. I have a surprise for you. She answered the door and Split heard a lot of commotion and raucous laughter. Two beautiful girls entered the bedroom.
Hi! I'm Marci Allen, said a short Mexican girl. This is Hazel Scott. Tuti said that we could join you. Is that all right with you?
Whatever Tuti want's, Tuti gets, he said with true disbelief in his heart. What a day this was turning out to be. (4)
Ned Cole arrived first at the congressman's party. He was with several of the specialists that he had been working with on trying to crack the blue guppy mystery. They chatted for a few minutes with Bill and then the congressman offered them a drink at his bar and they went out onto the balcony.
You fellas wouldn't believe the beauties that walk by here everyday, the congressman said as two good looking blondes spotted Bill and waved at him. He was getting to know a lot of the locals and wondered if Sid was going to come up with anything as good as some of the beach bunnies he had been cultivating lately. Just then the door bell rang and Ned went to the door.
Sid! Come in. It looks like you brought quite a crowd with you, he said as he went over to the bar to get ready for the drink orders. What would you all like, he queried?
About ten people piled into the condo, of which only two were known by Ned. That was Sid and Red Parks. Red was beautiful enough but she appeared to have the brains of a twit. Everybody came in so quickly that there was no chance for introductions. Everyone just began to mingle and talk to each other. Ned noted that there were at least five extra women in the group and that Sid had done his usual by finding the sharpest gals he had seen. Perhaps he realized that the congressman was a already doing pretty good on his own and might stop using his services if he didn't come up with something special. Sid wasn't going to have any problem with the congressman on this night. He would have his full attention when he needed it.
Split and Tuti drove to Cate's house. It was then that Split found out that the two girls he had met were his new tenants and possible recruits for the I.C.P. They arrived at Cate's house at about this time. They were just getting out of the car when Bob noticed them.
Hey Split! How about a game before you take off, Bob said trying to rub in his last victory?
Next time, Split said as he noticed Yenon at the door. Where's your mom? I've got someone for her to meet.
In the bedroom. I'll get her, he said as he let them in the house.
Yanon, this is Tuti, he said as he glanced over at the bedroom entrance where Cate was standing with a serious scowl on her mug. Tuti, this is Yanon and over here is Cate.
Tuti's eyes immediately lit up when she looked at Cate.
You weren't kidding when you said that Cate was gorgeous. She's even better than that, she said as she went over to Cate to give her a big hug. Cate was always a big one in the hugging department and Split knew right then that the two of them would get along just fine.
Come with me girl, Tuti said as she backed Cate into the bedroom. I want to know all the dirt. Split, you go play with the boys. We've got some business to talk over, she commanded as she left the room with Cate.
Split turned to Yanon and said, how are the guppies doing?
They went over the current status of the fish trying to be both friendly and catch a little bit of the conversation coming out of the bedroom. It seemed like every ten or fifteen seconds there would be a howl of laughter coming from the both of them. Split wondered what could be so funny. He had a strange feeling that the subject was him. This made him a little nervous. What could they be plotting? He would soon find out.
Have all the baby guppies survived, Split asked?
They haven't eaten a single one, Yanon said as he started a recount of the babies.
That's good. In a couple weeks, we'll start a new tank with just the babies in it. Don't ever sell the first ones that I gave you. That way you will have an income every week, starting in about two months. Keep about ten percent of your babies per week and your business will grow by that amount, if we can create a demand for the blue guppies. Something tells me that there will be more demand than you can imagine in a few months if everything goes as planned, Split said as he noticed Cate and Tuti coming into the room. Cate was all dressed up. He had never seen her dress so quickly.
Guess who's coming to the party with us, Tuti said as she grabbed Split's hand?
Wow! don't you look good, Split said to Cate?
You don't mind, Cate said with a cat-like look in her eyes?
Hell no! This is perfect, Split said as he opened the door to let the ladies out. Everyone agreed that they didn't want to spend too much time eating, so they went to an "all you can eat", Chinese buffet and quickly ate. Then they jumped into Split's truck and headed to the beach. While they were driving there, Split filled them in on why he was going to the party. He told them to get to know as many of the congressman's friends as possible and try to find out what they are doing, especially if they are into any scientific field. They parked the car on Mission Boulevard and walked to the congressman's condo. By the time they had arrived there was quite a crowd. Ned Cole greeted them and immediately took Split to meet the congressman. Then he ordered drinks for the ladies.
Congressman, I would like you to meet Split Thomas, the owner of the infamous I.C.P., Ned said as he turned to go back to the bar and get some drinks for the girls. What would you like to drink Split?
Nice to meet you, Split said as he shook the congressman's hand. I'll take a scotch and soda, he said to Ned. We should get together sometime and really have a serious talk. It seems that we have a lot in common. I guess you are just a little more radical than me, Bill said as he was noticing Cate and Tuti getting their drinks from Ned. It looks like you have fine taste in women at least, he said in a challenging way.
Thank you! They are special, Split said proudly. I'll introduce you to mine, if you'll introduce me to yours and please call be Bill, the congressman said as they headed towards Cate and Tuti. Split introduced them and then started to mingle with the rest of the crowd. He noticed that there were at least two gals to each man. He wondered who had planned so well. He went onto the balcony to catch a glimpse of the ocean and the boardwalk. It had been many years since he had lived on the oceanfront. Back then they still had hippies and the property values weren't out of sight, like they are now. The boardwalk seemed almost peaceful by comparison. He wondered if the wild, good old illusion in the first place. He felt someone gently rubbing against him and it broke his reverie. He looked at the person next to him and was struck by the casual way that she was nuzzling him while not even appearing to notice what she was doing. She was talking to Sid Michalson and not paying any attention to Split.
Excuse me, Split said without moving away. Can I introduce myself, he said to the couple? I'm Split Thomas.
Reta turned to face Split and slowly moved away from him. So you're split. Which half do I get, she said jokingly?
You can have both halves, if you tell me who you are, he said as he moved back a little.
I'm Reta and this is my friend Sid Michalson, the hatchet man for congressman Bohemia. Split and Sid shook hands but Split had a hard time taking his eyes off Reta.
Hi, Sid. Thanks for the invite. What does a hatchet man do for a man like Bohme, Split said as he continued his inspection of Reta?
Mostly advanced planning and trouble shooting. I try to help the congressman stay a congressman, Sid said aggressively. Reta, Split and I already know each other.
What are his chances in the next election, Split said as he finally turned to Sid and started giving him some real attention?
It depends on which issues he chooses to champion and whether those issues are the most popular ones at election time, Sid said happy that he got Split's attention.
Which issue do you think he should jump on, Split asked?
I personally think he could get more mileage out of environmental legislation and support, than just about any other problem right now, Sid said. And besides, the people can see results fast.
What kind of results are you talking about, Split questioned as he noticed how intently Reta was listening to their conversation? Apparently this wasn/t just a hollow headed broad.
Sid means, that just by sponsoring a bill, the congressman appears to be defending some poor little creature that the mean old developers are about to crush, Reta said with a look of triumph on her face.
Well! I can see why the congressman does so well in politics. If he can attract such a beautiful and obviously intelligent admirer as you, the general public doesn't have a chance, Split said hoping for a good response.
You're right about that, she said as she turned on her heals and headed abruptly back into the condo.
What did I say, Split said to Sid?
Don't worry. She wouldn't have said anything if she wasn't interested in you. She's just playing hard to get. Ask her to dance and you'll get her real reaction, Sid said hoping that Split wouldn't realize that this was a set up.
Isn't she here with you, Split said puzzled?
No! Reta is always her own person. Something you may also learn about her. Nobody has been able to pierce her armor yet. Give it a try. We all have. She's worth it, if you succeed, Sid said in a way that would encourage Split.
You'll excuse me then, Split said as he started back into the apartment. Let's pickup on our conversation later.
Split found Reta talking to Ned. He listened for awhile and realized that they knew each other quite well.
Why did you run off so fast? Can't you take an honest compliment, Split said as he joined the two of them?
Sure! But I expected more banter and less gallantry from you, she said as she turned back to Ned. Ned would you like to dance? It looks like a few people have started to get into the swing of it.
No. Not right now. I've got to talk with Bill. Why don't you dance with Split? I've heard he's a great dancer. See ya both later, Ned said as he walked away from them towards the congressman.
Is that OK with you, Split said to Reta.
Why not, she said as she started to dance right there next to the bar? They both danced several fast numbers and then a slow romantic song came on. Split wondered if Reta would continue her original flirtatious ways. He let her have a gentle lead to see what she was in the mood for. He wasn't disappointed with her moves. In fact Reta was doing everything possible to keep his attention up. Neither of them spoke to each other. They both decided to let body language do the talking for them. Other people were beginning to notice this love dance and stopping to watch in fascination. It was obvious that they were both very experienced dancers, among other things. Cate was perhaps the most curious. She had never seen Split in this type of social atmosphere. He was just her friend that came to see her and her boys a couple times a week. Her imagination began to wonder. She was thinking about their upcoming weekend in Mexico. She wasn't one hundred percent sure before tonight whether she wanted to get involved with Split or not, but now she knew, she at least wanted to get some nooky from him.
After the dance, Split led Reta outside for a walk on the boardwalk to cool down. They hadn't gone far before Reta reached up and kissed him. Now Split didn't know what to do about his date. It was obvious that Reta wanted him and he was definitely going to take her up on it.
Do you live far from here, he asked her trying not to pant too hard?
Yes! But I know a private spot on the beach under the pier, if you are game for it, she said as she led him silently towards the pier? (5)
Back at the party Tuti had made contact with Red Parks. She pretended to have just met her but in reality they had been lovers for a long time. She hadn't told Split that she knew more about what was going on, at least on the social level, than he did with this group. Red had been briefed by Sid on her duties. She was to keep the congressman very happy tonight because he was about to make an important decision that would effect Sid's future. She hadn't bee able to find out what that was yet, but told Tuti that she would be the first to find out if she succeeded with the congressman. So far, Red had determined that it had something to do with Split. She had overheard the congressman and Ned Cole discussing Split in a hush hush sort of way. She was also a little confused. She could have sworn that they were also talking about guppies. She thought maybe that was a code for some kind of secret mission or something. Tuti didn't know what to make of that either. She told Red to keep it up and that she would call her in the morning to get the low down on what was going on here tonight.
Tuti started looking for Split, when she noticed Cate out on the balcony staring out at the ocean.
What are you looking at girl, she said as she startled Cate?
Split has taken off with some girl. I hope he gets back in time to take us home. That guy has a hormone problem, Cate said as she squeezed Tuti's hand.
Yup. And it's just the kind I like, Tuti said with a wink in her eye.
I'm supposed to go to Mexico with him next weekend and I'm both excited and afraid, Cate said.
Wow! I'd love to go down there. Do you want me to chaperone, Tuti said in a jesting way?
That would be great, but I don't need a chaperone. I'm just afraid he might run off with some girl like he did tonight and leave me feeling bad, Cate said almost crying. Aren't you a little mad at him? After all he's your date for the evening.
Not at all. Split and I have an agreement and he's living up to it, Tuti said while watching closely for Cate's reaction. She got it. First it was one of bewilderment and then it slowly turned to a sensuous smile.
You mean, ah. Cate was struggling for the right words?
Girl, you and I will keep Split so busy he wouldn't have time to even think about another women, Tuti said as she hugged Cate and looked her right in the eyes. Cate felt herself melting with the thought of the upcoming weekend.
Reta entered the room via the private elevator in Bill's condo and quickly made her way to Sid's side. Split came in the other way. They had agreed not to make it too obvious that they had been together.
Sid, operation "Blue Guppy" has begun. Let's get with the congressman to set the immediate agenda, Reta said as she grabbed Sid by the arm.
It went pretty good did it, Sid said with a grin on his face?
Better and faster than I had expected. We are getting together tomorrow night at my place. With any luck, I should have a clue to what he is up to by Monday, she said. Reta spotted the congressman and the two of them walked over to him. Neither of them paid and attention to the fact that Red was busy fondling Bill's ego. That was her job and they considered her part of the family and too dumb to understand much of what they would be talking about. The five of them isolated themselves from the crowd. Reta told them about her encounter with Split and his easy acceptance of her advances. She told Bill that she should be able to get information quickly from him concerning the guppies. He seemed to be quite a braggart and she knew that this type of a man was the easiest to handle.
Bill told the Group that he had decided to go ahead with this project, full bore. He would use whatever angle they came up with to embarrass Split and his I.C.P. He had conferred with several of his colleagues about the I.C.P. They all agreed the I.C.P. was becoming a nuisance. The organization wasn't radical enough to attack with just journalistic ridicule. Lately, it had been stealing some of the thunder from the mainline people. They needed a way to put Split, in his place. The congressman knew that Reta would probably be the one to find out what Split was up to. He insisted on a full briefing after each encounter that she had with Split. His first taste of this was a bit of a surprise. Reta told, in very explicit terms, what she and Split had already done this evening. Bill set up a meeting for Monday morning here in his condo with Sid and Reta. He wanted to make sure that they delivered something to him quickly that he could use with the press against the I.C.P. They all returned to the party just in time to see Split leaving with Cate and Tuti. Red hadn't said a word in the meeting but now she turned to Bill and asked him why he was so interested in Split's guppies. The congressman just shook off the question by saying "it was just code for a special project" and then took Red's hand and led her out to the balcony for some air.
On the way home Tuti and Cate told Split about the plan to have Tuti join them in Mexico next weekend. Split was a little surprised but gathered by the way they explained it, that this was a good plan. He took Cate home first and then went with Tuti to her place. He could tell that she was in the mood again. (6)
Sunday morning found Split on his way back to his Valley Center fortress. He had a lot of planning to do today and he wanted to make sure that everything went well. After he arrived, he placed a call to Cassandra to see if she could make the meeting. Part of his plan would require her help in writing a book that would help finance the guppy project. She agreed to be there at two o'clock for the planning session. This mad Split feel a lot more comfortable with his plan. He knew that she would keep him from getting too radical. This was always a problem in dealing with political problems. People would accept only so much change at one time. We would have to hit them with a feather instead of a rock. Cassandra had a second sense about these matters and Split almost always deferred to her judgment.
He then called Kay Utsumi to confirm that she was coming. Kay was the most reliable member of his group and could be counted on for constructive criticism and general problem solving. Split felt that he had gathered quite a group of individuals together to make this project fly. If they couldn't do it, then it probably wasn't something that could be done without government abuse.
Split made his other calls and then his mind wondered to thoughts of last night's party. Reta had made quite an impression on him. He knew that she had some kind of scheme in mind. He also knew that there would be a major kicker involved if he were to take her seriously. He was looking forward to tonight's date with her. Just then the telephone rang. It was Tuti.
Hi Split. I just got a message from one of my friends that was at the party last night. She was included in a small meeting that the congressman had in his bedroom with your girlfriend, Sid and his assistant. They are planning to do something to hurt you and your group. It has a code name of "Blue Guppy" and they are using your new friend as bait, Tuti said.
What did she say they were planning to do, he said as he squirmed in his seat?
Reta is going to ply you for as much information as possible and have a meeting with the congressman right after every encounter that the two of you have. She's to report every detail. In fact, she already told the whole group what the two of you did under the pier, in detail. It's a good thing you didn't lie to me about what went on because I would have switched sides right there and then, Tuti said with a very serious tone of voice. I want to trust you Split. We could be a dynamite combination. You seem to understand me more than any other man I've met. Just don't lie to me and I'll play it straight with you.
Don't worry Tuti. It's too hard to find people you can count on in this world. I'm blessed with more than my share but I'm going to need all the help I can find. I'm up against the system and I think you know exactly what I mean. I keep everything legal but sometimes that's not enough. These people pass laws so fast that you can get in trouble without even being aware of it. By the way, who was your contact at the party, Split said hoping Tuti would be forthcoming?
Believe it or not, Red has been one of my girls for years. I hope they don't make the connection between us. If they do, then they will feed us a line of bull through her. She's a lot smarter than she appears and understands the subtleties of power politics better than they think she does. We both want to know what this fish story is all about. Don't hold out on me if you want us to help, Tuti said.
I have a general meeting of my group today. I want you to head up a special branch of the I.C.P., that isn't known by my inner circle, otherwise I would bring you along. Make a list of your most trusted friends that might help us. I'll fill you in on the plan and tell you all about the blue guppies Monday night, Split said as he heard a beep for another incoming call. I'll call you Monday. I've got to take this call. Luv ya, bye.
Hello, split said.
This is Mack. Are you going to need me today, he asked?
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea if you attended. You can meet someone we are trying to recruit and hear about our general plan for the next campaign, Split said. Do you think you can make it? You could show them the way to the lab.
Guy said you are meeting around two. Is that right, Mack asked?
That's right. Why don't you ride up with Ralph? He's the one bringing the guest. Maybe you can get a reading on the guy's sincerity, Split said while twitching in his seat. He was getting tired of being on the phone. He needed to write down some notes and get his thoughts gathered so he could make a good presentation at the meeting.
O.K. I'll see you there at two, Mack said as he hung up the phone.
Split went to his notes. He had been making them for the last few days and started to review and change different parts of his program. When he completed this, he went to his computer and typed in the plan. By the time he had enough copies ready, he only had time for a quick bite and then he was off to the meeting. He arrived at the Humanarium headquarters before anyone else except for Shekay and Guy. They were busy preparing a demonstration for the group in the conference room. Split told them that he was only going to tell the group part of the plan with the guppies. At this time he didn't want more than a handful of people knowing exactly how extensive his research had been with the fish. There were already enough layers of intrigue, concerning the uses and plans of the fish, that he was going to present to the group. There was no need for full knowledge of the project to be released yet. Both Shekay and Guy agreed.
The group was fully assembled at the prescribed time. Split began the meeting by having everyone introduce themselves with a brief bio on their function within the I.C.P.
Split then began with his version of what the master plan should be. Most of you know some of what we are doing here today, but none of you know the complete picture. Our newest member is a genetic researcher, Bob Singleton. If he likes what he hears today, he will be working at different levels within our group. Please give him as much support as you can and answer his questions freely.
We have come to the point where we have to make a serious effort at introducing our blue guppies to the public. We will do this in stages. Stage one will be a simple marketing of the fish through the pet stores based on their rare breeding program. This alone will bring us a small profit. The point of doing this is to make sure that we have enough guppies in circulation, out in the general population. That way, we don't have to worry about the government stepping in and stopping the breeding of the fish. We've made the guppies desirable enough for fish fanciers to prize them for there color. We've put a electronic tracing device in each fish that is also reproducible in it's young. (B) This will allow us to track each guppy, if necessary. We don't anticipate having to do this, if we get enough of the fish out into the general population, but you never know.
We are now sure that we are being monitored by at least two or more groups of people. I don't think they know we are aware of their activities, yet. We are going to feed them information on the project, using our timetable. They could very easily get the wrong idea concerning our motives and shut us down. This would be just because of their own ignorant fears. We want to prevent that, if possible.
The second feature of this plan will be a marketing of the actual events, as they happen, presented in a book and movie script that Cassandra Lewis and I will be writing. We will mix the facts together with a good dose of fiction. This will throw off the reader and our opponents at the same time. I have a handout here that gives you a guide. Be sure and keep this because as we write the book, you will need it to understand everything. The first thing you notice is that each of you has been given a different but similar name. We will use the book to contact you at different times. After today there won't be direct contact between each of you. The less we associate with each other, the better the chance we will have of keeping a lid on this.
We've also designed an interactive voice system using a common number. That is the number you see at the bottom of the handout. We will change it from time to time but your voice mail box number will stay the same unless someone tampers with it. We will be able to monitor that on our computer with encrypted e-mail. This method of communications will give us a semi-secure telephone line. (Y) It's not foolproof, so very sensitive material should still be given to each other on a person to person basis. If it really gets sticky, we will have Guy design a security plan. For now, this should cover us.
The groups that are curious about us have probably already stolen a sample of our guppies. That's not a problem. They would have been able to simply buy some in a pet store in a short time anyway. Because the machines that we placed in the fish are organic, they probably won't detect anything. (F) The problem is that they are also skilled at personal espionage. I've already been contacted by one of their agents in a social situation. She will be trying to get information from me. I'm going to let her know this evening that we are developing a new food source. While this is true, it's obviously not the whole story. It should be enough to keep her off balance for awhile. The point is, please be on the lookout when talking to others about the project. They are liable to send other ringers out to us because they are looking for a way to discredit our whole organization. As you know, our membership is growing with leaps and bounds. I think they are worried that we will soon become a force to be reckoned with. They're right. We are very close to making a major impact on society. They don't know it, but they are walking right into a political trap and the blue guppies are the bait.
If any of you don't understand what we are trying to do, now is the time to ask the questions. Bob, you have a question?
What are my duties and how can I help, Bob asked?
I want you to set up the first pet store and become a wholesaler for other pet stores. I also want you to work with Guy and Shekay to familiarize yourself with the experiments we've been conducting. Later on, we will set you up with a restaurant that will have specials that feature the blue guppy dishes that Guy has perfected. Believe it or not, he's done a great job of designing very tasty meals based on a guppy entree'.
What are some of the other uses for the guppies Ralph asked?
I can't tell you all of them now because of security reasons. Some of you already know about the wall system we have been working on for the Humanarium model. (E) That is the main use for the fish but it has caused us to make some startling discoveries in the field of genetics. These genetic factors are the ones that we are most concerned about. In the wrong hands it can be abused. We aren't going to let this information out until it can be common knowledge in the scientific community. We'll place it on the internet as soon as possible and e-mail every scientific endeavor that could possibly use the information. We don't want someone to dominate this technology. That's why all of you will be asked to participate in the distribution and protection of this very special breed. Guy and Shekay have prepared a demonstration in the labs for all of you and they have prepared a full set-up for you to take with you. I want each of you to start a private network of distributors that none of the others of us know about. This way, if there is a leak in the organization, it won't stop the whole process. It should take from six months to a year to distribute enough guppies, so that we can make our announcements concerning the true purpose of this strain of fish. It seems like a funny project, but believe me, it is a very serious matter given the geopolitical situation today. Are there anymore questions before you go into the lab? If not then have a good trip back and I'll be contacting each of you.
The meeting went well, Split thought. He had expected more of a discussion but welcomed the support. He needed to get back to San Diego to get ready for his date with Reta.
Everyone got a complete briefing on the care and feeding of the blue guppies. Guy and Bob got together to talk about some of the more intricate details of the project. Guy could tell that Bob would fit in real well with this group. Bob was amazed at the progress they had made with the genetic designs. He felt that he wasn't given the complete story by Guy but realized that he hadn't earned the right to know yet.
Before Split left, he had to talk with Ralph and Mack. They met in a private office next to the lab.
What do you think of our plan so far counselor, Split asked as they entered the office?
I think you've really got a handle on the situation but what are you doing about placing the guppies internationally, Ralph asked?
Next weekend I'm going to Mexico on what will appear to be a social outing, but in reality will be the beginning of our move into other countries. I know a couple down there that can be trusted with this information and I'm taking several new recruits with me, Split said with a funny smile on his face as he thought about the situation. Have you come up with any other suggestions that we could use to promote the guppies?
I know that you already can trace the fish but it seems that we shouldn't make that obvious. I think we should issue a kind of pedigree form with each pair sold. We should also register each buyer so that we can give a reasonable excuse for being able to locate the guppies so easily, if it becomes necessary in the future. This will be kind of a silly promotion but it could prove very valuable, in case we encounter a lot of resistance.
Good idea. Let's go with it. Tell Bob about it and also let him know that we should be able to start working next week, if he is available. I think you've brought us a good man. We'll put him through a few hoops to make sure that he isn't a plant. I appreciate what you've done for us Ralph and I hope it turns out to be a real winner for all of us. Is there anything thing else that you think I should know, Split said as he stood up to leave.
No. I think we've got it covered for the moment. Do you need some help down in Mexico, Ralph said as he started walking out of the conference room?
Not on this trip, but keep your eyes open for a good legal contact in Mexico. We will duplicate the program down there with the exception of the distribution methods. We'll have to figure another way of doing that. Maybe just the restaurants. Wait until you taste Guy's recipes. We should have no problem killing the prejudice Americans have against eating small fish, Split said as they were walking down the hall.
I'll admit, it does sound strange to me. I guess it's just a matter of what you were accustomed to when you were growing up, Ralph said as he shook Split's hand. I'll be talking with you tomorrow. Take care.
You too, Split said as he continued out the building. He was glad that everything seemed to be coming together so well. He just wondered when "Murphy" would rear his ugly head.
On the ride back, in Ralph Binski's car, there was a rather lively discussion about the project. Bob realized that he had become a key player in this game and wanted to be reassured that he would be protected, in case anything went wrong. Both Ralph and Mack told him that they thought Split's organization was solid and more importantly, it was based on sound principles of positive capitalism. No matter what happens, we will have caused the public to think about what's going on in politics right in front of their eyes. If that's the only thing we accomplish, then we will have won, Mack said to Bob.
What about all the other plans they have for the guppies, Bob quipped?
Those are all bonus points, Ralph said quickly. We can't tell you everything just yet, but I I'm sure you will be pleased with the results, if we succeed.
As long as it's a positive direction and not just another way to pervert the system, you will be able to count on me all the way down the line, Bob said enthusiastically.
Both Ralph and Mack were favorable impressed with Bob and would tell Split so in the next couple of days.
Ralph told both of them about the additional plan he discussed with Split concerning the papers and registration of buyers. They both agreed it could prove useful in the future as a delaying tactic.
SEX AND COUNTER SEX
Split arrived at Reta's door with two small presents. She opened the first one and it was a goldfish bowl.
What a pleasant surprise. I suppose the other present is the goldfish, she said acting pleased?
Just open it and see, Split said. He decided to get right to the point with her and see what kind of a reaction he would get from her.
Oh kay! What are these, she said trying to be coy?
These fish will change the world as we know it, Split said in a flip manner.
Sure. Whatever you say. What do they do, talk, she said jokingly?
No. They just taste good, Split said.
Yuk! What do you have to do, eat a hundred of them, she said now showing genuine curiosity?
That's about right. They are something like popcorn shrimp, only tastier. We are developing these guppies for space travel and for wilderness housing. (A) They are also quite attractive. I thought you might enjoy a pair. They breed rather quickly, so you will need a larger tank in a few months, Split said earnestly.
Why don't you set up the fish and I'll get us a drink. What would you like, she said as she started off into the kitchen?
Scotch and soda, if you have it, Split said as he placed the guppies in the tank.
She returned with the drinks and handed one to Split. They both looked at the blue guppies for awhile. She wondered if this was all there was to the mystery. Somehow, she sensed that this wasn't the whole story. She decided to use the moment to ask some pointed questions.
Are you going to sell these in a store or something, she asked?
We've made plans to open a restaurant to test market the dishes that we've developed. There seems to be quite a prejudice against small fish in America. We're not sure if they will be accepted. We've developed some great dishes, so if there is any possibility of succeeding, I think we've got the right combinations, he said in a businesslike voice.
Split, somehow I don't see you as a restaurant owner. I thought you said you were in politics, she said trying to bait him.
This is grassroots politics. We are going to set up a new way of distribution and solve some inner city poverty problems at the same time, he said hoping she would buy the explanation.
What! You mean you are going to try to get ghetto kids to raise guppies and this will solve their money problems, she said with cynical laughter in her voice?
It's more complicated than that, but for those that try hard, there may be a solution for them. That's more than they have now. This is such a silly solution, with such basic economic meaning to it, that it might just catch on, he said feeling like he had just told the biggest fish story of all time.
Reta just shrugged her shoulders. She was beginning to think she had run into a real nutcase. She wasn't sure if she wanted to have anything more to do with him. Then she remembered what it was like with him under the pier last night and she decided that he was at least good for something. Either this guy was totally bonkers or he was on to her. She was going to find out one way or another. She noticed last time that he seemed to wait for and enjoy her advances. She liked that in a man. She loved being the aggressor. They both sat quietly for awhile, just kind of looking at each other. finally she put her glass down and made her move towards Split. He knew that the question and answer period was over. (7)
Toward evening, Tuti had called her girlfriends and asked them to come over to her house. She wanted to get their assessment of the situation and see if they would go along with her in backing up Split. Hazel and Marci arrived together and shortly Red dropped in. They all smoked some of Tuti's gunja and they were feeling very good when Tuti brought up the subject of Split and his activities.
What do you think of my new white boy, Tuti said with her usual provocative grin?
He's all right but what is he up to, Hazel asked?
He's doing some fancy research that's suppose to get him into some kind of political trouble. He wants me to form a secret group to help him ward off his enemies. He seems pretty straight to me, Tuti said.
Do you want us to help, Marci said?
I think so. Split is coming by tomorrow night. Maybe we should all show him a good time. I'll bet he takes good care of his people. There should be a lot of bennies in it for us. The first thing I'm going to try to talk him into is taking us all to Mexico next weekend. How does that sound, Tuti said as she moved closer to Red?
They all liked the idea and decided to give it a try. They were all curious about Tuti's infatuation with this guy. She hadn't shown any interest in a man in a long time. He must be doing something that she wasn't used to. They smoked a little more and then Marci put on some good dancing music. They all started dancing with each other and the scene was getting more intimate each moment. They all knew each other extremely well and knew each other's moves. Tuti noted, that the group was definitely becoming a family. She wondered if Split would fit in? She sensed that he would. She and Red were the first to head for the bedroom. Marci and Hazel danced one more dance and then joined them. It was a good thing that Tuti had such a large bed. She liked keeping it full and active. She would have no problem with that tonight. Each women danced her own special dance and the four of them melted into each others arms. (8)
As I understand it, you want a multi-media process used, with as many stretches of perception incorporated as possible, Kay said trying to sum up Splits instructions. Is that right?
You've got the general idea, he said.
How about adding an appendix in the back of the book that refers to numbers in place of the sex scenes. They could refer to a more graphic description of the sex scenes, Cassandra volunteered?
Right. That's the idea. We can make the pages detachable so that parents can keep the kids from reading such graphic material, Split added. The internet version will be easy to encrypt these sections, Cassandra said.
Why not add an eight hundred or nine hundred telephone number directory with an interactive voice system that would allow the reader the opportunity to hear an actual computer generated voice describing the scenes? This could raise additional money, Kay quipped. (Y)
A good Web page would be even better using the latest video and audio technology, Cassandra pointed out.
Great idea. Now we're on a roll. Say, why not put the details of our new technologies in the book this way. We could use letters inserted at the appropriate places in the book. This way the true aficionado would have a way to benefit from the book. This is our main goal with all our plans. Getting this technology out to the public without interference from the government is what this is all about. We can start with our membership list. We'll just e-mail them a short brochure and put it on all the other e-mail lists and systems. We should be able to market a lot of the copies without having to ask anyone. We'll self publish and seek a publisher at the same time like we did with my first book, Split said just as the waiter approached the table.
Have you all decided, the waiter asked?
I'll have the house special with a salad and blue cheese dressing, Kay said first.
That sounds good, except I want Italian, Cassandra added.
Same here. Make mine blue cheese, please, Split said. Please bring us some more coffee he added.
The waiter seemed pleased with this easy order and quickly returned with the coffee.
Can you still remember how to write and publish at the same time on the Net, Kay queried Cassandra?
I'll have to brush up a little. Things change so fast in that world.
Are you going to include the technology that may stop cognitive dissonance in your book, Kay asked as she took a sip of her coffee? (C)
No. That will have to come later. If we succeed with the rest of the program we can market the solution to this problem and it will probably be the most important invention since the telephone was introduced by Bell. I'm sure that if we include it in the beginning, it will be abused. Politicians and attorneys need self destructive behavior by individuals to justify a great deal of their own personal and professional existence. They would try to suppress anything that would effect their inventory of rules and regulations. The more they restrict people the happier they are. Of what use would they be if they couldn't create problems that they alone think they can solve, he added?
You've got a point there. Are we going to include all of the other ideas that we have spoken about before, asked Cassandra?
Yes! I would also like to include a few fantasy technologies to keep the sharks guessing. If you have any ideas along those lines, just write them into the script. If you can sell them to me then there would be a good chance that it can be included into the manuscript. Try anything that sounds good or entertaining, Split said as he made room on the table for his lunch.
The waiter placed the meals in front of each of them and then returned to the kitchen. He had tried to catch a little of their conversation but he couldn't even tell what the subject was. It didn't matter. He wasn't a player, yet.
How far can I go in the sex and violence department, Cassandra asked quietly?
Be as bazaar as you want in the sexual encounters. This is just for mass consumption. No matter what you say about sex, you will always offend someone. So just have fun and put as much fantasy sex in the book as you can. The way it's structured, a person can pick and choose whatever they want to read or hear about. I don't want any physical violence in the book or movie unless we are directly attacked. People are generally blasé nowadays when it comes to direct "in the face" kind of violence. It's really been overdone. We want to emphasize the elements of mental and economic violence that exist in our present day society, he said.
How do you feel about using our genetic skin cultures as a form of promotion for our other genetic products, Kay wanted to know? (V)
I think we could use that in two ways. We could have actual examples in the movie and then we could use the new film technology that would allow us to interject an older actors face, digitally, onto the final print to give the appearance of youth. Maybe Clint Eastwood or Mickey Rourke would be interested in being reincarnated in this way. They are both the types of entrepreneur that personifies what we are trying to portray. Besides, both of them like to have fun with sex in their movies, even though Clint might be too prudish for some of the scenes that you will come up with Cassandra. At least, if I know your imagination at all, split said with a wicked smile on his face.
Are you going to give me bio's on the real live people that you want portrayed in the book, Cassandra asked?
Of course, but I want you to scramble up the facts and add some juicy tidbits to change their actual life stories. Some of the characters can be split in two and developed. Just use your imagination and have fun. Don't add too many new faces but if you thing they might fit in with the group, go ahead. I trust your judgment and your talent, so don't worry, Split said as he finished his salad.
What are the financial arrangements going to look like for the film people that participate, Kay asked?
There will be at least three possibilities. For the big stars and high payroll personnel, they can choose between owning their own individual twenty acre parcel or being part of the project that Mack is developing for me on lot seventeen. (A) This is the one with the round towers that have a boardwalk between the outer skin and the inner office windows. People will actually be able to gently walk up to the top of a skyscraper or they can take an elevator if they want to move quickly. We are going to build four towers that are attached to each other at the boardwalk. The views will be spectacular considering the fact that you are starting with a view of at least a thousand feet on the very first floor. People will think they are in the highest building in the World. I don't think we will have any problem in getting the stars interested in this building, especially after they have talked to their tax consultants, Split said.
How are we going to keep this quiet, Cassandra asked?
Simple. I won't tell anyone the whole story until it is about to end. Then we will be prepared. Part of the story will be a political trap that we will lay for some of the boneheads that are in office right now. They won't know where we are coming from. This is where I will have to control the release of certain information. I'm counting on you to coordinate this factor with me. You just write the story the way you see it evolving, add a little spice and I will release it in the proper order, he said.
How often do you want us to meet, Cassandra questioned?
I would say at least once a week. Kay, I would like you to be involved so that you can coordinate the background material, such as the scientific information on some of the technologies. You will also have to use your imagination in dealing with some of the fantasy technologies that Cassandra and I will come up with. We have to make them appear credible to cover the real ones that we will be introducing. All the research is in the development stage and we won't be formally releasing very much of it until everything is in place to protect it, Split said emphatically. This is sure a good meal, isn't it?
Ya, it's great. Maybe this should be our standard meeting place, Cassandra said hopefully?
Is that all right with Kay, he asked?
That sounds fine to me, she answered quickly?
Then it's same time and same place next week, he said.
Later on that afternoon, Reta went to the congressman's condo for a meeting. Included in the meeting were both Sid and Ned. Carrinda was still there from the night before. She had called in at her office and told them that she was handling a special project for the congressman. She didn't know what it would be but she was soon to find out.
Reta told them about her encounter with Split the night before, including the fact that he disclosed a new use for the guppies. When she told them about the upcoming restaurant, specializing in guppy meat, they all had the same basic reaction that she did when she heard about it.
You mean to tell me, that Split just came to you with the guppies in hand and told you what he was doing, Bill said with a look of disbelief on his face?
That's what he did. Do you think he's on to me, Reta asked?
Well, he's either on to you or it doesn't matter who knows about the guppies, the congressman recounted.
He did say he was going to use these fish for some kind of multi-level marketing system for ghetto kids. I couldn't tell if he was putting me on or not. It seems ridicules to me, she said.
I think he is trying to confuse the issue. He was able to evade the people I had following him today. We are not sure if he did it on purpose but given the facts Reta brought us today, I think we should assume that he is aware of our activities, Sid said to the congressman.
You are right, Sid. That means we need to step up our program. Does anyone have an idea of another way we could attack, Bill asked?
My people did manage to find out who two of the people were that he did business with this morning. First, he met with his attorney. His name is Ralph Binski and he works with Feldman, Feldman and Conners' law firm. He also met with Bob Singleton. We found out that he is a genetic researcher. Later Split and Bob leased a store front on El Cajon Boulevard. We talked with the owner and he told us that they were setting up a pet store specializing in fish. Maybe this is where he will start the multi-level marketing scheme but it seems strange that a person as highly trained as Bob Singleton is would want to run a pet store, Sid said.
I can be of use here, Carrinda interceded.
What do you mean, the congressman asked?
I've done business with Ralph's law firm and I can request the attorney I want. I'll check in my office and see who has used him before. I'll use my associate as a referral so that he won't be suspicious. We'll have to think of something that we can use his services for though, Carrinda added.
That's great Carrinda, Bill said. You and I can get our heads together later and come up with something for you to approach him about. Does anybody have any other ideas? Reta, when is your next encounter with Split?
I'm not sure. He said he would call, she answered.
Next time you get together, humor him a little and try to get both a recipe from him for the guppies and see if he will let you get involved in his multi-level ghetto system. I'm reasonably sure he is on to you, but it doesn't matter. We'll just have to use whatever information we get from him. We can put it to use in a way that will bring his organization down, the congressman said.
Why are you having such a problem with his group, Reta asked? His organization is too rigid when it comes to their organizations principles. They are becoming too popular too quickly and we don't know a lot about their new research and development plans. There are just too many unknowns that we don't have a handle on. We need to get them more under control and into the mainstream, Bill answered defensively.
Why don't I just join the organization and tell him bluntly that I'm doing some research for you, she questioned the congressman? He might respect that more and be more forthcoming with information.
Let's not make that call yet, but if you feel that it would be a better approach, I'll trust your judgment on the matter. We may find a compromise, but I doubt it. The I.C.P. has a natural distrust for all government agencies. He probably won't fully cooperate, no matter what we do. We'll need to fill in the blanks ourselves. If any of you get any information, be sure and let the whole group know about it. This is going to be a high stake guessing game. We have to win it. All of our careers could be at stake here, Bill said making everyone nervous.
The meeting broke up shortly after Bill's comments. He got everyone concerned about the success of this strange mission. Carrinda stayed after the meeting and the two of them went out on the balcony to discuss her assignment. Bill knew that he would have to lead her gently into the world of sexual reality and politics. He wasn't sure he really wanted to do this but if she suggested it, maybe it would work out. After all, he wasn't in love with her. But he did find her extremely good company and would hate to lose her.
Just what did you have in mind little girl, he said playing with her?
Can't I just go there and request advice on a similar type of a project and request Ralph Binski, she asked?
That would be fine, but we don't know what kind of legal advice Split is requesting from the counselor. We need to get the attorney a little off guard in order to get any useful information. Otherwise, he will not reveal anything that relates to another client. Do you have any suggestions along those lines, he queried Carrinda?
Maybe I should get to know one of the secretaries and find out where this Ralph Binski hangs out when he's not working. Maybe I could get him drunk or something and catch him off guard, she said catching the congressman's drift?
Now that sounds like a capital idea. Why don't you just wonder into his office and see if it works, Bill instructed. (9)
Split had only one more major meeting for the day. That was with Mack at the Valley Center House. His mind was more on tonight's get together with Tuti and company. When he got to the house, Mack was already there.
How do you like the view, Split asked?
Incredible. You really have a thing for hilltops, don't you, Mack countered?
They afford maximum privacy and beauty to the owner. They are the Rolls Royce's of real estate, he answered. Take a look over here to the west. See that valley below, as he pointed in the direction of a large group of old oak and sycamore trees. Down there it seems like a journey back a thousand or more years. It's basically untouched by man. I've made a deal with a Japanese couple that have owned the property for many years. They don't want it changed very much but they know that progress is at their doorstep. It's over two hundred acres with three box canyons. As you can see, there is development on all sides but the property itself is protected by the steep terrain going down to a spring fed river bed. It's well known by the locals that mountain lions live in the caves down there. I've spotted one myself while jogging one day. It scared theliving daylights out of me. Fortunately it seemed just as frightened of me. We'll go down there in a few minutes. There is a perfect sight for a small lake that we could grow a massive amount of the blue guppies without anyone knowing. All we would need add to it is some small underwater heating units that would protect them in case of a cold spell. I have done some diving there and the only fish in the lake seem to be small minnows and a few perch. We can get rid of these fish very easily and install the guppies by next week. There will still be predators such as frogs and salamanders but we can keep them under control so that our losses will be kept down to a minimum.
Let's go on down there. It sounds good to me, Mack said.
After checking the site over, Mack told Split that he would handle the engineering and construction of the underwater units needed to heat and harvest the fish. Mack was completely taken by the natural beauty of the valley. He wanted to make sure that everything stayed as pristine as possible. He would make sure that the workers used only animal trails while completing the construction and installation of the equipment. They also agreed that the work would be done in a quiet enough manner that it wouldn't draw any attention from the local inhabitants. Split was pleased with Mack's enthusiasm. Mack doesn't show a lot of emotion when dealing with business matters but Split could tell that Mack was impressed with this project.
Mack left with instructions and timetables for the completion of the guppy lake. He knew that this had to be done right because as Split had pointed out, this may be the last site that the authorities uncover and only the two of them will ever know of it's existence. The workman would be told a cover story and the project would then be secret.
Tuti was getting her apartment ready for the group meeting that night, when she received a call from Split saying he had just finished his last business meeting and he was heading down to San Diego from his house. She wondered what his house was like. She would have to remember to ask him. After the call she walked over to Hazel and Marci's condo to see if they were ready yet. They were just finishing dressing when she arrived and it didn't take long before they were all headed back to Tuti's.
When is Red going to move in with you, Marci asked Tuti?
It depends on what happens tonight. I don't know exactly what Split intends for us to do. One thing I do know, we are going to show him what it's all about tooo- nite, she said as she did a dance around them to emphasize the meaning. This boy will remember this party, she added.
Is this business or pleasure, Miss Tuti pants, Hazel teased?
A lot of both, Tuti said as she opened the door to her apartment. Now I want the two of you to help me with the fix'uns, she commanded.
Tuti and Marci went into the kitchen and Hazel rolled a joint. she asked whether Split smoked gunga or not? Tuti said that she thought he did, but hadn't seen him actually do any. He seemed to be on a health kick or something. She knew he didn't object to it, so she told Hazel to go ahead and smoke as much as she wanted to.
Tuti brought out an Elephant beer for each of them. They hadn't seen one of these yet and asked her about them.
Split brought a six pack last time he was here, Tuti answered. You'll like it. You don't have to drink very much of it and it has a major punch. Don't drink too many of them. They'll sneak up on you. Stick with the smoke and you'll have more fun. Don't do too much of either right now because you will have to do some heavy thinking about Split's project before the party starts. I don't know if he is staying the night or not. Maybe we can just wear him out and we can all get a little extra in the morning, she added as she took a hit from Hazel. Good stuff, she quipped.
Boy, these ribs taste good, Marci said as she finished off the first one.
Don't you be doing that girl, Tuti said in a stern way. Wait until everybody else gets here, as she snagged one for herself.
Hey, wait Hazel yelled. don't you do that without me. They all had a rib in their mouth when Red came storming in.
Hi guys! What's that good smell? Oh good. some of Tuti's famous down-home ribs, Red said as she quickly made her way to the kitchen and the pan of ribs.
Split better hurry up or the only ribs he's going to eat are ours, Hazel said as she grabbed another one.
Don't worry. I've made plenty. Now you girls set the table. He'll be here any minute. Remember, we want to get him to take all of us to Mexico with him this weekend, she said as she gave Red a big hug.
Split arrived about five minutes later and quickly moved in on the Ribs. They started hammering him with questions about their role in the I.C.P., but Split waited until he had devoured several ribs before he replied.
I know you are all curious. You're wondering what Tuti has gotten you into this time. I can tell you this. You'll be doing more good for yourself and other people than you've ever done before. If that turns you on, then the rest will be a piece of cake. I don't detect any negativity in this group and I don't expect any to develop. The main thing you will be doing is information gathering. The people that want to bring us down aren't playing fair and I think they have underestimated us. At least I hope so. They've drawn first blood, as Red and Tuti can attest to, last Saturday night at the congressmen's party. They sicked a ringer onto me. she was trying to ply information from me and they have also stolen some of our fish. They follow me whenever they can. I've been able to lose them so far, when I didn't want them to know where I was. I've got to keep doing that and only allow them to follow me to places that I want them to know about. We already have various projects going that have been set up long ago. I don't have anything to do with these sites, physically. This is son that these activities can't be traced to me. I want all of you to be a special branch that helps me drag information out of some of the key players. Red already has it wired with the congressman. There are two other players that we need to surround. That's Sid Michalson and Ned Cole. Red knows both of them and would probably be able to guide one of you to each of them. Is that possible, Split asked looking straight into Red's eyes?
Ned will be easy. He chases beaver all day long but Sid is a different story. I think that we should let Marci handle Ned and I'll show Tuti and Hazel how to get involved in the agencies business as a tag team, Red suggested.
Do you think that Sid will be suspicious, Split asked?
He's always suspicious of everyone. It won't matter. Tuti can pretend to be double agent. He won't go for it but instead will feed her misinformation. That will help us get a handle on what's real or not, Red said with authority.
Boy, Tuti wasn't kidding when she said you have a head on your shoulders. You have the key assignment and now I'm twice as confident that you're the right person. You really get into this kind of thing, don't you, he asked Red?
If it's for the right reason. I've seen these snakes operate and I would love to be part of the group that brings them down, she said.
You've got it. This weekend, if you are all free, I'm going to let you use my company bus for a very special pleasure trip to Mexico. Has Tuti mentioned it to you, he wanted to know?
At this point they all gathered around him to let him know, in no uncertain terms, that they were with the program one hundred percent. Tuti turned up the music and Hazel pulled out a joint. The music was mellow and the mood changed decidedly from business to pleasure. Split would record this night into his long term memory forever. (10)
Carrinda had made fast work of finding out where Ralph Binski spends his leisure time. He liked to dine at Bully's and have a couple drinks before going home. She made a point of finding out when he usually arrived. She was there when he came through the door. She was surprised that it worked so quickly. she placed herself at the bar close to his table. She would play the role of the jilted girlfriend, drinking to drown her sorrows. She hoped this would arouse the "White Knight" mentality in him. It didn't take long before he noticed her sitting there. Ralph had already ordered, when he couldn't help but hear Carrinda talking to an older women next to her about her troubles. She mentioned something about another women, her best friend and her boyfriend. She complained about always having to work so hard. She seemed almost on the verge of tears when Ralph decided to talk to her.
Hey, it can't be that bad. A good looking women like you can have their choice of men, he blurted out.
Thank you but I'm feeling pretty ugly right now, she countered. She gave the women next to her a wink.
Would you care to join me? I'm in a very good mood. Maybe I can bring your spirits up a little, Ralph said with a big smile and a hand gesture to encourage her over to his table.
I don't know. I'm not very hungry, she said as she started to grab her drink and her purse and move in his direction. This was going very smoothly, she thought to herself.
He stood up and moved the chair for her. She slipped in gracefully and said, I'm sorry if I'm any trouble. I've already had a couple drinks and I might get a little sloppy. If I do, just call me a taxi and I'll get out of your hair. It's just that I feel like tying one on tonight. I want to get him out of my system as soon as I can. You don't mind baby-sitting me, do you, she asked?
No. Not al all. I could use some company tonight. I've been working everyday now for about three weeks without a break. Maybe I'll just join you and lay one on too. I can always reschedule my appointments tomorrow morning. I deserve the time off anyway, he said encouraging her.
What kind of work do you do that you can just take time off like this, she questioned him?
I'm an attorney. What do you do, he wanted to know?
I work with animals but right now I don't want to talk about my business. That's part of my problem. It seems that I'm all work and no fun, according to a certain jackass that I know. I can't help it if I love my work. He just needed some "strange", if you ask me and my good buddy decided to take him up on it, she said with a quiet sob in her voice.
Don't let it get you down. He wasn't worth it. What can I order for you, he said as he noticed the waiter coming over to the table?
They sat there until it was obvious that the staff was anxious to go home. They were both so loaded that the manager suggested that they call a cab. They both agreed to share it. What Ralph didn't know was that Carrinda had asked the bartender earlier to make her "wine only" margarita's. Ralph drank the hard stuff all night, something he wasn't used to, and was completely out of control. Carrinda was able to keep him talking about himself most of the night. She found out much more than she expected. She now thought, she knew exactly what the I.C.P. was up to with the guppies. They were using them for genetic experiments that were clearly against the Genetic Approval Board's regulations. The congressman would be very happy with her tomorrow when she gave him this report. She was glad that she didn't have to sleep with Ralph. Not that he wasn't a good man. She just wanted to stay loyal to Bill.
The next morning, she called Bill and told him about her conquest. He was delighted and invited her over for the evening. After he hung-up with Carrinda, he called Sid and asked him to set up a press conference for later in the day. Sid called back about an hour later with the news that the conference was set for four o'clock. This would make it possible to make the news. Sid inquired as to the nature of the announcement that the congressman was going to make. Bill told him about Carrinda's discovery and suggested that Sid put his science people on this new track of inquirer. Sid said that he should also check with the E.P.A. and their new species division. We might be able to seize the whole project. The congressman was elated with the new turn of events.
In his news conference, he not only told the press what area of work he was concentrating on but that he was going to support a bill that would put violators in prison. He wasn't ready to point fingers at the specific violators, but he told the press that some arrests would surely be forthcoming in the near future. The congressman tried to keep the comments as general as possible.
When Ralph heard the news, a chill went up his back. Ralph immediately called Split.
Split, did you catch the news, he inquired?
I sure did. Do you have any idea where the leak came from or do you think they are guessing, he said frantically?
I'm afraid I might know exactly where it came from. He went on to tell split about the night before and his encounter with Carrinda. He wasn't sure if he told her anything, but he couldn't remember ever being so loaded before.
Split asked Ralph if he knew anything else about the girl. Ralph told him that she worked with animals in some capacity. He wasn't quite sure what she did, but he told split that he would do a complete background search on her to find out what the connection was. Ralph apologized and asked Split what he thought they should do next.
We just have to move faster and lay low and see what their next move will be. It will take him a little time to get the penalty section of the law changed. That will buy us some time. In the meantime, I want you to find as many locations as you can to place the guppies. The more we have out there, when the shit hits the fan, the better. Ralph agreed and told Split that he would get back with him as soon as he had finished his investigation. He wasn't through with this Carrinda chick, yet. He had never been made such a fool of, so quickly, in his life. A touch of personal revenge was called for in this case, he thought to himself.
After his conversation with Ralph, Split called Kay to see if she would be the driver on his Mexican trip. She doesn't drink and would be able to keep the girls out of trouble. He also called Cassandra, to see if she would join them. He told her that this would be a good chance for her to meet some of the people that he wanted in the book and the movie. It would give her a chance to do a character study on each of them. She agreed to come along. She had also heard the news and asked Split about it. Split told her to be thinking of some cover story that had to do with genetic research. Maybe some misdirection in the book would throw them off the trail. He told her that he thought they had about a six month gap before everything would start to either fall apart or come together. They had to be ready. She agreed to come to Mexico with the group but as she hung up, she had a feeling that Split was up to his old tricks. She had gone through some very strange evenings with him. She started getting excited by the prospect.
Split's next call was to Bob Singleton. He wanted to know when Cate's boys could be put to use helping Bob with the pet store. Split told Bob about the news story and Ralph's run in with a new ringer. They both agreed that they must step up the program, to achieve their goal, of getting as many guppies out there as possible. Bob said he could use the boys tomorrow after school. He would be ready for delivery of the fish by next Monday. He was placing some interesting ads in the paper this weekend. Split let Bob know that the fish would be there by noon Monday. Split then called Cate's place. Yenon answered with, Ya got me. Now what do you want?
This is Split. You guys start working tomorrow after school at the pet store. Is that all right?
Great. I'll tell Even. Do you want to talk to my Mom, he asked?
I sure do. Will you get her for me?
Hi guppyman. How's it hangin, she started with?
It'll be hangin low Friday. In fact, I'm going down on my bike. Do ya want to ride shotgun, he volleyed?
You mean, that blue gang bang Harley? The ultimate chopper, she teased him?
That's the one. The rest of the gang will follow us in by bus. I'll pick you up about ten. We want to make some pit stops at some of my favorite eating holes. How does that sound, he asked?
I'll be here. Don't you get loaded while I'm on that bike with you, she said seriously.
No way. We'll wait until we get to the ranch. I'll see you then. Take care, he said as he prepared to hang up.
Not so quick. What's happening with the boys, she wanted to know?
Ask them. They know the program. They start tomorrow. I've got to get off this phone. My ear is about to fall off, he said with a whining voice.
See ya! She hung up.
Split sat there looking at the phone for a few seconds. Boy, she sure knew how to end a conversation fast. He wondered if he should try to reach Tuti and her group to see what kind of progress they were making. He decided to do some paperwork instead. The day would then be over for Split. Life was getting very interesting for him. Now he had to keep it under control. The sunset was magnificent at his hilltop fortress. The rest of the week would prove to be very quiet by comparison.
Split spent most of the week getting the lake below his house ready for delivery of the fish. They cleaned out all of the predators that the divers could get. The installation of the equipment was completed by Thursday morning. This included the heating system, the feeding system and the harvesting system. Mack was on site most of the time and supervised the whole process. Split was glad that he had such a competent friend to help him with things like this. Mack had proven invaluable during the construction of the Humanarium labs. He would be the key figure in developing the Humanarium Model. (A) Mack could write his own ticket with the I.C.P., as far as Split was concerned. He was one of the few people that understood the complete picture. Split had made sure that he was privy to most of the plans concerning the blue guppy project. Mack and Kay were the only two people he felt confident enough with. He could turn the whole thing over to them and it would get done the right way. That was a good feeling. He had left some sealed notes with Ralph and told him to give them to Mack and Kay if anything should happen to him. This was an insurance policy for the I.C.P. They took about ninety percent of the guppies that Split had been raising in his pool and put them in the lake. They would be happy campers in these waters.
Ralph called Split Thursday evening to tell him that he found out that Carrinda was one of the congressman's favorite girlfriends and that everything was under control.

The ranch is located approximately five miles east of Ensenada, on the road to Aqua Caliente. The entrance is marked by two white towers. The road to ranch is a dirt road that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. But this road does lead to a wondrous valley full of mystery and magic. To the East and South of the ranch are large mountains with majestic rock formations. The ranch itself is located in the Northwest corner of the valley. This particular spot is best appreciated on a moonlit night. The coming weekend will be a full moon and all of the romance and beauty of the ranch will be showcased for it's guests. The valley has a river running through it and will someday be the site of a new lake. The dam has been planned for a long time but nobody seems to know when the ranch will become a lakeside resort. The ranch used to be a meeting place for some of highest ranking men in Ensenada, before "The Gringo" bought the place with the help of his friend Fred.
Over the years, the Gringo and his wife have invited many guests, their friends and families. They have chosen a few of them to be exclusive members at the ranch. These members have many extra privileges and benefits. The ranch is unique in that anyone that visits has learned about it by word of mouth. This feature makes for a friendlier atmosphere. The minute you get there, you feel a sense of warmth and happiness. The Gringo and his wife only add to this with their wonderful personalities. The staff is also had picked. They have a natural graciousness that adds to the ambiance. Very few guests have ever left this romantic place without having had the time of their lives. So, let us begin the journey.
On Friday morning, Split got in his bus and headed for the San Diego Stadium. Everyone, except Cate, had agreed to meet there at nine thirty. When he arrived at the stadium, he parked at the "E" gate, as planned. Kay was already there, so he took the bike out of the bus and told her he would be right back. He had to pick up Cate.
Cate was ready when he got to her house. The boys ere having fun checking out his bike when Bob and Sue came down to see Cate off.
Don't you let that crazy man get you into any trouble in Mexico, Bob said.
Is there anything you need from Mexico, Split asked the couple?
Ya. Bring back a bottle of Kalua, Bob requested.
You've got it. How about you Sue, he asked?
Anything that you think would be good. Maybe next time we can join you, Sue asked hopefully?
That sounds good. We can bring the boys with us too. They would get a kick out of the place. This weekend is a combination of work and play for me. Otherwise, we could do it this time, Split said as he slid onto the blue Harley.
Cate got on behind and they roared out of there with waves and smiles from everyone. They arrived back at the stadium to find that the bus was loaded and ready to go. Split had brought his new Honda Electric Civic in tow behind the bus. He reminded Kay that it was there so that she would be careful should she have to back up. They agreed to drive straight through to the Roserita Beach Hotel. Kay had been down to Mexico with Split. She knew the route he would be taking. Red was the only other member of the group that had been into Mexico. She liked to go to "TJ" and shop with some of her friends. Split led the way. The girls seemed to get a real kick out of the interior of the bus. Split had it specially equipped to allow him to both work and play while on the road. It is completely computerized so that he can deal with his work either in the massive living room/kitchen combination or in the large bedroom The girls where quick to find the refreshments. Cassandra sat behind Kay, to give her a little company. The rest of them where like a group of sorority sisters on their first trip to an out of town football game.
This is a real high energy group, isn't it Cassandra said to Kay as the girls hooted at a car going by loaded with guys?
I just hope it doesn't get out of hand. I'm glad we are going to the ranch. If we make it there in one piece, they can make as much noise as they want. I don't think you can get in any trouble down there, Kay pointed out.
I'll try to mother them until we get to the ranch, Cassandra said as she got up to join the girls.
Hi! I'm Cassandra, an old friend of Split's. You guys look like you are having fun already.
This place is unbelievable, Tuti said. I want to travel around all the time. Oh, My name is Tuti. Join the fun.
It's kind of early for a drink but what the hell, she said as Red handed her a Corona.
My name's Red. What kind of a deal do you have going with Split, she questioned Cassandra?
I'm trying to write a book about everything that's going on with the I.C.P., she answered. What do you do?
I check on the bad guys to see what they are up to. In fact, that's what we all do here. Where does the driver come in on the program, Red wanted to know?
She's Split's right hand man, or woman, as you can see. She probably knows more about what's going on, than all of us put together. How did you get involved in this guppy thing, she asked Red?
I don't know anything about guppies but Tuti is my best friend and when she wants some help, I give it to her. Besides, it looks like she's onto a good thing, Red countered.
You know, hanging around Split for a while kind of grows on you, if you know that I mean, Cassandra said slyly.
So I've noticed Doesn't this guy hang with any men, she asked?
Sure, but the things that need to be done at this point in time must require a special women's touch for him to be so surrounded by us, Cassandra answered carefully. Your group must be very special to him to get him to stop working for a whole weekend.
We've tried to make him feel special. He sure has a way of keeping our attention span, Red said thinking of Monday night's party at Tuti's. She wondered if Cassandra knew of Split's exotic sexual habits.
If you are talking about what I think you are, Split and I have had our moments. She pause. They haven't all been entirely private. I think you know what I mean, she said looking for a sign of recognition from Red.
Boy do I ever know what you mean, she said as she reached over to give Cassandra a big hug. Welcome to the club. It looks like we are going to party hardy. Have you met Marci and Hazel, she asked as she took her hand to lead her over to the two of them? Marci! Hazel! Come meet an old friend of Split's. This is Cassandra and she has had a lot of experience in dealing with him. We should listen to her a bit and see if we can figure this man out, she said playfully.
Glad to meet you both. He's not that difficult to deal with. If he ever gets serious with you, there won't be any question in your mind. Otherwise, he's just out for good fun, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. My guess is that he has something going with that blond that's riding with him, she said while waving to Split as he came along the side of the bus.
I've got my eye on her too, Tuti said trying to catch Cassandra's reaction.
I'll bet you get a shot at it, if I know Split. He likes to share the wealth, Cassandra quipped.
Tuti and Red both looked at each other and then at Cassandra. Anybody for a "Nooner"? I'm horny as hell, Tuti said as she grabbed Reds' hand and headed for the back bedroom.
Don't be shy, Red said to Cassandra. We'll be doing it as we cross the border. You can join "The Cross the Border Club". It's kind of like "The Mile High Club", with a twist.
We're coming, Marci and Hazel yelled!
Cassandra looked forward into the rear view mirror and caught Kay's eyes looking at her in amazement. Then she began to laugh and Cassandra knew that his wasn't a problem. She rushed into the bedroom where the action had already begun. (11)
As they crossed the border, the guard heard laughter coming from the bus. He wondered if it meant what it sounded like. Split guided Kay through the treacherous traffic of Tijuana and along the border on the road to Ensenada. Cate was taking in the sights like a lost school girl. She had never seen anything like this. She felt herself getting more and more excited every minute. She wondered if it was because of the vibrations of the motorcycle or just the newness of everything. Every few minutes she hugged Split to let him know that she was enjoying herself.
They went past the bullring to the first road toll booth. Split waited for Kay to pay the attendant and noticed that he was laughing as Kay pulled away. Kay must have said something funny to him, he thought. He couldn't see that Tuti and Hazel had flashed the attendant as they drove off. Rosarita Beach Hotel wasn't very much further down the road. Kay warned the girls that they had better come up for air. There was an intercom that went throughout the bus, so that driving, she could have not only heard what was going on, but she could have turned on the video equipment. She only watched a couple times when there was very little traffic on the road. She figured she could look at the tape later with the group and surprise them with it.
As they pulled into the Hotel parking lot, the last of the girls found her seat. Cassandra was feeling like a teenager again and couldn't stop smiling. Writing this book was going to be a lot more fact than fiction, she determined. Split parked his cycle. Then he and Cate went over to the bus. He took one look at the situation and the looks on the gal's faces. He immediately surmised what had taken place on the road to Ensenada. He knew he had better have a little talk with the group away from Cate. He wasn't sure yet how she felt about something like this.
Kay, would you please take Cate into the restaurant? I need to have a little talk with the crew, Split said like a concerned father.
Sure. Come along Cate. The rest of them will catch up with us in a minute. Besides, we need to get to know each other. Split has been talking about you for a year at least. Why are you so hard to get? You've been driving him crazy. He's used to getting what he wants, most of the time. Kay kept questioning her as they entered the Old Hotel?
I haven't been trying to do anything to Split. It's just that I had some bad relationships in the past and I didn't feel like getting burned again. I've stayed away from dating altogether for about a year. Split just happened to come along at that time. Besides, if you know him very well, you know that I'm probably making a big mistake by having anything to do with him, other than as a friend. He's not exactly Mr. Faithful, she added.
That's true. I think you should just have fun with him. Don't invest too heavily in him with your emotions. You'll probably get burnt, Kay said as they sat down at the bar. What do you want? I have to stay sober until we get to the ranch. Then I'm going to let it all hang out.
I'll have a Margarita, Cate answered. You know, I think Split might be all right if he feel in love with someone. He seems like a sincere kind of person, even when he's playing. He doesn't hide anything from any of the girls. I think he would play it straight if he made the commitment.
I think you're right and I can tell by that comment that you are interested in changing our dear leaders personal habits. Good luck! a lot of us have tried but he has his way of avoiding the traps, she said as she took a sip of her Pepsi.
Back in the bus, Split was telling the girls about the ranch and one of the unwritten rules of the Gringo's. Split knew that the Gringo allowed almost anything to go on at the ranch in the name of good fun, but he told them of the one thing that bothered him. Two gals cam down to the ranch with a group of fire-fighters from Santa Barbara. They made it very obvious that they were lovers. He almost threw them off the ranch. He and several other guys harassed them until they did leave the fun and went to their rooms. I asked him about that because it surprised me that he would be so intolerant when he allowed so many other forms of wild behavior. He said that he felt any good man could do anything a women could do to another women and he would have a little something extra to boot. I couldn't argue with that but I'm just warning you. That's the only way to get on his bad side. We can do whatever we want in private, but keep it out of their faces in the other areas of the ranch. It's kind of an X-rated family place. Actually, what it really is, is very romantic. There will be plenty of guys there and none of you is on the job, except for myself and Cassandra. Just enjoy. We can take the bus to some out of the way places to have our fun. We don't need to throw it into their faces. They are great people and will be invaluable when we go truly international. Enough of this serious stuff. Let's go into the hotel. The Margarita's are on me. don't eat too much. We are stopping in a town that built it's reputation around the lobster. We'll be there in about an hour. You'll love the food. I'm going to take a swim. Does anybody want to join me, Split asked as he headed out of the bus? He hoped he hadn't put a damper on their fun, but he felt it was the wrong foot with Tom and Rosemary.
When he got into the hotel, he asked if Cate or Kay would like to join him for a swim. He didn't tell them he wanted to recreate his last high dive of ten years ago. Apparently the last time he dove off a high board, he attempted a one and half in open position and didn't quite complete the dive. It ended with a combination belly flop and face slap. He hadn't ever tried it again. It was on this exact diving board that he had completed this exciting display of male stupidity. The fact that he didn't return to the board to correct the mistake had plagued his male ego until this day. Little did anyone know what was in the back of his mind for this casual appearing swim. split was so wound up about this, that he didn't know whether to ask the girls to join him pool side or not. finally he decided that they would be a motivational factor, but just in case he chickened out at the last moment, he didn't tell anyone about his personal challenge.
To his surprise, everyone except Kay, decided to join him in the pool. There where only a couple of kids in the shallow end. It seemed like a perfect setting to recreated his fiasco and make things right. After getting into his swimming suit, he swam a couple laps to warm up. He teased Cate and Hazel a little, just to set a more relaxed mood. Then he went to the low board to try a couple practice dives. His first dive was a little wobbly. He wondered if this was a talent that the body forgets over time. He decided he better take it very slowly. He didn't want to ruin the trip by having an accident of some kind. He tried a couple more dives, including a one and a half with a brandy ending. He received a couple hoots from the girls. They had started to watch him. They were wondering what this old man was trying to prove. He had already exceeded what they thought he was capable of doing. Then he decided to make the move to the big board after practicing power bounces on the low board. Once he knew he could handle the bounce in the board, he knew he would have a good chance of completing his dive. He practiced some power bouncing on the high board before he attempted his first dive. He knew that a jack-knife was the easiest and safest dive for him. He did several of these, to the amazement of the crowd that was gathering. Had he been eighteen, there probably wouldn't have been much notice of what he was doing. Just a casual stare and wish by each onlooker, that they could be eighteen again. This was different. Split seemed completely out of place on the high board. The next dive was the hardest to control from that height, but he knew an easy way out of it. That is the classic "Swan Dive". The biggest problem was over-bounce or under-bounce as the diver left the board. He knew how to adjust to both. His first two swan dives were a product of over-bounce. He just did a simple brody movement at the end and went in feet first. The next two swan dives were fairly well executed. Now came the time to do the one and a halves. He choose to do the first one in tuck position. He went a little too far and slapped the back of his legs into the water at the end of the dive. The second dive was letter perfect. Now, he felt his confidence coming in strong waves. He was ready to try his favorite move. This dive is a combination of a flip and a swan dive. He did a couple practice power bounces to test his balance and then he went to the back of the board. He stood there holding the rails for a few minutes, just gathering his thoughts. This also added to the dramatic effect. He noticed that everyone was watching, even the kids. They seemed to sense that he was going to do something special on this dive. Finally, he put his hands straight down to his sides. At the same time he started his walk, he raised both hands until they were parallel with the board and then he let them swing naturally during his four step approach. On the fourth step, his hands went high and then came down fast, as both feet hit evenly on the end of the board. He was completely in control of his body and his mind for these few seconds. He flew upward and forward. His arms where in the swan position and he was looking at his pointed toes as he gently and gracefully started his rolls. all he had to do was go far enough around, to once again see the water and then straighten up and enter the water. The rolling motion seemed endless. Where was the water? He was mentally in frames. The dive lasted an hour in his head and then he felt it. The face slap, the belly flop and this time a new pain. His groin seemed to swell like he had just been kicked there by an irate women. At first, he didn't attempt to swim. He just floated to the top with his head still under water. The crowd was on it's feet and starting to become concerned for him. Finally, he raised his head and let out a groan. Both Tuti and Marci jumped in the water to help him to the side of the pool. He hurt too much to be embarrassed, but that feeling was starting to well up in him. They made it to the pool side and Tuti made a crack about how well he did stunt diving. It almost looked like he hurt himself, she said.
Split managed a small smile and was glad for the humorous comment. Tuti, that was just the beginning of the show. On the next dive, I'm going to crack my skull on the board. Do you think the crowd will like that, he added?
Only if you break your neck, she said giggling. She has such a beautiful and joyful smile. She could make anyone feel good, even in the worst of situations.
On the next dive, we'll wait in the water for you, Marci added, trying to get in on the humor.
I just retired for good. I think I'm going to have to except the fact that I'm not eighteen anymore. I was hoping to wait a few more years, but I can see now, nothing but old age is ahead for me, Split said wanting the banter to continue for awhile until some of the sting had gone out of his body. The worst part, was the fact that his face was bright red from slapping against the water with so much force. For a brief second, he considered getting out of the water and trying again, but that thought left him quickly when a shot of pain went through him, starting in his groin.
Oh Tuti, I don't know if I'm going to be good for much tonight. I might need the "TLC" treatment for a few days. Do you know how to drive a motorcycle, he asked?
I was born on one, she quickly countered. She couldn't believe her luck. She had been looking for a way to get split to let her use his bike from the first moment she laid eyes on it.
Good. This will give you a chance to get to know Cate better also. I know you've got your plans to have your way with her. This should make it easier for you, Split said as he started to get out of the pool. A few people clapped, but most just made kidding remarks. Split was truly humbled by his mistake, just like he was the last time he tried it. One good thing, he could have a drink and relax on the bus with the girls now. He told Cate the new plan and she seemed rather pleased about it. He wondered if he was going to lose his opportunity with her now. Had he made such a fool of himself. Then Cate reached over and gave him a true soul kiss.
I'm having such a great time, she said and you did a great job on the boards. It's too bad about that last dive but the kids would have been really proud of you, she added.
Split knew that was the seal of approval and ego was properly mended by her kind ways. He started wondering if he was falling in love with her. This emotion was strange for him. It had been many years since this kind of helpless, romantic feeling, had entered his being. He often considered the possibility of it never reappearing again. He was glad it had, but also a little worried. The timing didn't seem right. What with all the sexual intrigues going on in his life. He didn't know if he could balance all of this at one time. His anticipation grew as he watched Cate get on behind Tuti. What a great looking pair they made. The contrast was almost pure perfection of beauty. Tuti roared around the parking lot a couple time, showing off for everyone, as the others got on the bus. They followed behind on the bike because Split was the only one that knew where the ranch was.
The next stop was Puerto Nuevo. "Lobster Town," a small seaside town that specialized in succulent lobster dishes. The town only had three or four eating halls ten years ago, but since the free trade agreement was reached in 1992 the town has boomed like most of Baha. They had their choice of many new establishments, but Split recognized on of the older places. He directed them to what looked almost like a large shack. The group wondered why he would choose this one when there were so many elegant looking places surrounding it. They would soon find out that all is not what it seems in Mexico. The lobsters that they consumed were twice the size of any they had eaten before. The atmosphere was Mexican family hospitality. They clearly understood why this place had gained such a good reputation. Everyone except Kay and Tuti consumed several large Marguerites. A party spirit was carried back onto the bus. The girls comforted Split, but unfortunately that was all he could accept from them at the moment. The ride down from Puerto Nuevo to Ensenada was the most spectacular part of the drive. It reminded Split of Highway one's scenic route from Hearst Castle to Monterey. The winding mountain roads high on a cliff overlooking vista's featuring ocean and bay views were just similar enough for the reminder, but the absence of pine trees gave it a different feeling. Split was commenting on the views when Hazel started to engage him in some serious conversation about last week's encounter with Sid Michalson.
You know, Red did a real good job of getting us signed up with agency. She made sure that Sid got the first bite. Tuti and I made sure that he would come back for more. It worked so well that he's asked us to stay with him in his mansion at Point Loma. It's right on the beach at Sunset Cliffs. He has a back guest house and pool in the middle. The parties that go on at that place are never ending, she said trying to make it sound like work.
Did you get any information, yet, Split asked?
Sid is very closed mouthed but some of the other people around him aren't so careful. We did a lot of listening. We found out that the men visiting him were very highly placed individuals in the environmental movement. I've seen some of them on television many times. They liked to talk about their work and whenever Sid wasn't around, Tuti and I would draw them into conversations about themselves. Invariably, they would start bragging about their work. Your I.C.P. projects are very much on their minds. They plan on shutting you down one way or another, Hazel said in a stern voice.
Have you been able to find out how they are going to do that, he requested?
One man mentioned the fact that they were trying to find some legal grounds, based on your tempering with genetic research, to accomplish the attack, she replied.
That's good and it's bad. I don't think they will be able to even guess what we are doing, but if they get enough against us, they might pull it off, Split said with a look of concern on his face.
They also mentioned something about a fast track method of getting the guppies onto the endangered species list. They must really have some kind of major political clout to be pulling these kinds of stunts, Hazel said as Red and Marci joined them.
Cassandra had quietly been listening the whole time, from across the isle. She was taking notes concerning the trip, the individuals and the conversations. She would later put a large dose of fantasy and sex into the story line but for now she needed the basic structure. She was fascinated by the sexual war that was being waged by both sides. She wondered if this method would yield positive results for the I.C.P. It wasn't exactly the image that she would want for the organization, but like Split explained, they drew first blood and defined the battlefield. He said he would have to beat them at their own game or all would be lost. She felt that he was rationalizing a little because she knew he liked to play around with every little muffin in the kitchen.
How did Marci do with Ned Cole, Split asked?
He was easy, but also not very helpful. I think I'll be getting more information from him later as I get invited to some of the functions he attends. I don't think he has made any connection between me and the rest of the group. Didn't Sid recognize Tuti from the party, Marci wanted to know?
Sure he did, but we were ready for him. Tuti just told him that she was through with Split. She caught him with another women the night of the party. Of course, that was their plant, Reta Bailey, Red said. Sid is fairly convinced that this is true, but he still doesn't trust Tuti. He will probably have her do something to prove her loyalty. We don't know what it is yet, but we presume it will be against Split. Sid has already asked her to resume her relationship with Split and report back anything interesting to him. She told him, she would gladly do that.
Well, it looks like all the players are in place. We'll just have to see how the game unfolds. For now, it looks like the only one of you that I will be able to see after this trip is Tuti. She will have to relay any messages back and forth to the rest of you. They already know about Cassandra. She's a card carrying member of the I.C.P., so avoid her also. Try to spend some time with her this weekend though because she's going to put each of you in our book. We'll get copies to each of you, so that you can have a good laugh. Please don't take everything in it as fact. There may even be an occasion where we will send you a message via the story line. Cassandra will give you each a secret code that not even I know about. Should this code show up in the book, then whatever follows until the end of the chapter will contain information important to the person with the right code. Please remember that this will only happen if we need something very special done and we can't reach you. The code is for either our safety or your safety. Act quickly on this if it does happen. Cassandra! Do you have all the codes ready for the girls, he asked as he turned to address her?
I'll have them ready by tomorrow. I want them to be codes that flow into their particular personalities. This is so that the book has a natural feeling to it. Specially if I have to pass on some instructions to one or more of them, Cassandra said as she went back to writing more notes.
That's a good idea. The only other business I have to do is with "The Gringo." So, the rest of the weekend is just party time. Let's all have another Corona and check the sights out. We are almost to Ensenada. The place is starting to look more like Chula Vista, than Old Mexico. Pretty soon there will be a Taco Bell on every corner and a MacDonalds next to it, Split said half joking.
Split sat behind Kay so that he could guide her to the ranch. They took the back way to avoid most of the tourist traffic. They had to find a certain statue that had a traffic circle going around it and then head east. Tuti and Cate were keeping up with them rather easily. Split was glad that she came to his rescue. He was feeling almost a hundred percent now and was looking forward to this evening's play time. They found the statue and headed east. Kay asked if it was far. split sensed her need to be relieved at the wheel so he asked her to pull over. He would drive the rest of the way. Kay was glad that he had picked up on the hint. she made her way to the rest of the group and grabbed a beer. She felt like she had already earned her vacation by having to do all the driving. Split hadn't had too many beers so he felt it would be better for him to guide them in.
The road to the ranch was the road to the east coast of Baha and was fairly well traveled, but it was only a two lane road with many twists and turns to watch out for. He maneuvered the bus to the entrance, which was marked by two white pillars. From there, the road was a good dirt road that was well maintained by the ranch. It wound into a valley. Shortly, they came to a locked gate. Split knew the combination automatically because it was linked to the year and the month. They only changed it monthly. Once through the gates, you were immediately upon a cobblestone road that took you to the guest house and the famous "Gringo Bar." Split had so many good memories about this place that every time he arrived it sent a feeling of excitement and anticipation throughout his being. He knew that this was going to be a very special weekend. He pulled up to the curbside just past the pool.
We're here, he announced. Last one to the bar buys the drinks. They all made a mad dash into the clubhouse. When they got to the bar, they found out that they couldn't buy anything because it was free, unless they wanted something special. Even then, they had to pay in "Gringo Dollars." These were purchased as they registered, most of the time. split spotted "The Gringo" coming out of the kitchen, where he had been supervising the staff for tonight's meal.
Hey! How ya doing, Tom said as he came around from behind the bar and gave Split a big hug?
Great, Split said as he returned the gesture. I've brought a fantastic little group down with me this weekend. I think they will liven the place up a bit, if that's possible, he added. Split introduced Tom to each of the girls and Tom managed to get a good hug out of each of them. They immediately knew that they were in special hands this weekend. They also met Bennie and Max as the both of them waited on the girls fro behind the bar. Max had a big smile on his face when he saw Split coming in with all the goodies. He would be sure to invite the group over to his bungalow this evening for some of his house special, "Mota". Split got the room assignments from Rosemary and fifty "Gringo Bucks" for each of the girls. He also bought each of them one of the ranch sweat shirts with the "Sunning, Sipping and Siesta's" logo's on them. After several hours of talking and getting to know each other, Split told them that it would be good to unload the bus and get ready for dinner. Tuti and Cate had already headed for their room. It looks like Tuti would get the first bite tonight. (12)
Cassandra noticed that Tuti had taken charge of Cate and had left the crowd. She knew what that meant and she decided to take advantage of the opportunity by telling Split that she wanted to meet with him in her room. she said that she had several points that she wanted to cover with him. Split got the message, but wondered if he was up to it yet. When he arrived at her room, she was sitting on the bed with a towel rapped around her. Her big question was whether or not she could seduce several of the men at the ranch during this trip. She wanted to know how many was allowed before she lost her dignity. Split told her that she could do whatever she wanted to do in the book. The important part of the book wasn't the soap opera's. That was just the silly side of the book. she then wanted to know if she could start with him. "Absolutely, as long as it was in the book that way, he said as he started to undress." (13)
Around six, the dining room was filled. Several other smaller groups had come down for the weekend and about a dozen of the regular rancheimer's were on hand. It seemed that everyone knew each other, but most had just met. This was typical of the ranch. Split asked if any of the girls wanted to go for a night in Ensenada, but he didn't have any takers. It looked like each of them had set their eye on one of the guests. Split wondered how this was going to work out. Tuti and Cate came in late and sat next to Split. Tuti gave Split a big kiss and a wink to let him know that everything had worked out.
How did you two enjoy the bike ride, he asked as he squeezed Cate's hand?
You can let me drive back, Tuti answered.
No. I think I'm going to have that pleasure, but I do appreciate you filling in for me, Split said. On the bike, that is, he said as an afterthought.
Oh, I'll fill in for you anytime, she said as she looked at Cate blushing because of their comments.
I believe that. We should all go for a night swim. There is a full moon tonight and it's warm out, he said trying to change the subject to make Cate feel more at ease.
Haven't you had enough swimming for one day, Red asked? I don't think they have a diving board, do they, she continued?
If they do, I'm staying away from it, Split said as he took a big bite. I'm still going to go swimming in awhile though.
The group soon emptied into the adjacent bar where some people were playing ping pong or shooting pool. There was even a group playing darts. Split noticed that each of the girls had paired off with someone. That was good. Tuti and Cate stayed close to him After awhile, the three of them went out to the pool to check out the action. There were several couples in the pool having a good time. Two more couples were in the Jacuzzi above the pool. At night you couldn't see them, but you could hear their squeals from time to time. Split suggested that they get their suits on and meet back at the pool. That's just what they did.
Meanwhile, Roberto sensing that the party was moving outside, set up the poolside bar. By the time Split returned, there were another ten people sitting around the pool and the bar was opened for business. Split was glad that there wasn't a diving board. He just gently dove in from the side and swam a couple laps. The moon had just come up and it was between the twin peaks. From this angle the mountain peaks looked like a perfect set of women's breasts. Even nature cooperated around the ranch to make for a romantic and sensual setting.
Cate and Tuti arrived a few minutes later with Cassandra trailing behind them. Split watched as Cassandra made her way to the bar. She immediately started flirting with Roberto, who was definitely up for it. Meanwhile Cate and Tuti had slipped into the pool and had joined him in the corner. Even though the pool lights weren't on, the effect of the full moon made it seem almost like daylight. The corner that Split was in was the darkest because it was shaded by a cabana. Both Cate and Tuti wasted no time in trying to get Split's attention, at attention. Split ducked under the water and started to tease the both of them at the same time. They didn't back off. Instead it seemed that they wanted to "get off", right there with their suits still on. (14)
Don't you think we should continue this someplace else, Split asked after the girls had regained their composure?
Why don't we drive someplace with a view and continue there, Cate said in a playful manner.
Good idea. I know just the spot. It's called "The Blowhole" and the cliffs above it give a spectacular view of the entire Ensenada bay. They started out of the pool when Split noticed that Cassandra had already made quite an impression on Roberto. She waved at them as they left and went right back to her pursuit of the bartender. He had already asked her if she would join him in the Jacuzzi in about an hour.
In the clubhouse, Max was busy trying to get a small party to join him in his hacienda. Red seemed interested in him and Hazel had picked out Joe. Marci came along with Pedro and Skip was all over Kay. The only rancheimers left in the bar, except for the new guests, were Fred, who was talking to "The Gringo" and Billy, who was still trying to make time with Julie.
When the group arrived at Max's place, they were surprised to see what a nice layout he had. Max spent a considerable amount of time at the ranch and was on the board of directors. He had to set a standard and did a very good job of it. The place was complete with a fireplace. He very quickly started a fire in it. He passed the bowl to Red and she commented on the quality of the mota.
How did you come to be involved with the ranch, Hazel asked Joe as he took a hit on the pipe?
He held his breath for a few seconds while he contemplated his answer. Tom and I used to be pirated together back in the old days. We had a hundred foot sailboat that we took all over South America. We carried all kinds of strange things and people. We got to know a lot of the politically powerful people down here. We were often invited to participate in some of their business ventures. On one occasion we got caught in a storm and the boat ended up washed ashore on an island. Our radio still worked. After we determined that this was a deserted island and that there was no way to get the boat working again, we radioed for help. The only problem was that our cargo was marijuana and we didn't want to get caught with it by the authorities. We decided the only way out was to burn the boat, cargo and all. We got the biggest contact high in history. By the time the rescue boat got to us, they couldn't figure out why we were all laughing and having such a good time.
They brought us to Ensenada and dropped us off. We knew that we had to hide out for awhile, but we didn't have very much money. We just explored some of the local countryside. When we first saw this valley, there was only a broken down chicken farm with what looked like a bombed out barracks surrounding it. We saw some people by a small house and asked them about the place. It turned out that they owned this property and were willing to sell it to the right person if they would improve it. We both saw the potential and Tom had enough money for a small down payment. He negotiated a good price and we moved onto the ranch. He told the owner that he would have to return to the States in about six months to earn enough to keep up the payments and raise enough money for the rehab. We stayed here and worked on the place and then when we felt it was safe again, we both went back to Southern California. Tom worked as a mortgage broker to support the ranch. We just slowly built it up over the years until you see it as it is today, Joe said as he was once again handed the pipe.
That must have been quite a party you guys had on that island, Red questioned?
It certainly was the most expensive party I've ever thrown. It probably cost us a hundred thousand dollars per joint. But the good part of the story is that we changed our ways and found this ranch. You've got to understand that this was back in the Sixties when pot was just joke. Everybody you knew smoked it and the law looked the other way. Now-a-days, with all these crazy new designer drugs, it's not a laughing matter anymore. I hear that Split has a new cure of drug addiction, Joe asked? Is that true? (C)
How did you know that, Kay asked in full amazement?
"The Gringo" told me, he said defensively. Why? Wasn't I suppose to know? Kay knew that it would have been better if she hadn't said anything. Now she had to cover herself. That is an area of research that only Split knows about. I'm surprised that he told Tom about it, Kay said.
Tom told me one night when we were both pretty loaded. Is there a problem talking about it, Joe wanted to know?
Yes! There is. We have political enemies in the States that might grab the technology and use it in a negative way. We don't know whether the government has a vested interest in seeing that the drug culture is perpetuated or not. Just think what would happen to the economy and power structures is Split really has come upon a cure. The drug dealers would be out of business and addicts would become productive citizens. Government bureaucracy would be cut way back and all their social programs would virtually disappear. They no longer would be able to hit the taxpayer over the head with this problem and all of it's assorted benefits to the government. Who knows? Maybe it's just stupidity and religious prejudice that has kept them from legalizing drugs and basically having the same social and economic reaction. You know, if they would legalize drugs without taxing them and labeling the drugs like they do poison, the same thing would happen. There wouldn't be any glamour in the drugs like there is when there is a partnership with government. They should also make them available at the cost of an aspirin in suicide centers. The government already has a vested interest in selling drugs already. The situation with cigarettes and alcohol is much different except that they cause more trouble.
You still haven't said whether or not he does have a cure, Marci remarked.
I know and I'm just going to leave it there. Just please don't spread this around anymore. We can lose big, just based on the rumors. I promise you that you will know the answer within a year, one way or the other, Kay said.
Will it help me with drinking and smoking, Joe asked?
Only Split knows, Kay said as she grabbed Skip and headed for the door.
You two leaving so soon, Max asked. We're just getting started. Why don't you stick around for awhile?
We would, but Skip has made certain promises to me that I expect him to keep, she said with a devilish look on her face. Skip just shrugged his shoulders and followed her out the door like an obedient puppy dog. This was unusual for him. He was more often than not, the life of the party. Kay had definitely played some magic on him. They went directly to his bungalow and Skip was completely in the mood to fulfill his earlier promises of a passionate night of lovemaking. Kay hadn't had a lover for weeks, so Skip didn't know what he was getting into. (15)
Marci and Pedro seized this opportunity to head for his place. They apparently had the same idea. (16)
Joe and Max both wanted to party a little bit longer before they took on the ladies. Hazel wanted to know more about some of the earlier days at the ranch. She prompted both Joe and Max to tell some ranch stories. Several hours later, it was obvious that it was time for all of them to get some sleep. Joe gallantly offered to walk Hazel back to her room, but she made it clear that she would rather spend the night at his place. Joe hadn't scored this easily in a long time. He felt that maybe some of that old "touch" was still there. Hazel was roaring to go as soon as they got into his cabana. She didn't want to get him talking. She had the feeling that he was an endless source of tales that she preferred to be told on some other night. He started to be polite when they first got into the room, but Hazel was having none of it. She just started to get undressed in front of him until he finally stopped talking. (17)
Max offered Red another drink when everyone had left. The two of them just sat there cuddling in each others arms watching the dying fire. They were both too comfortable and too tired to do much of anything else. It had been a long day for both of them They had somehow reached that level of intimacy, where they both knew it would be better for both of them, if they waited until morning to become lovers. After awhile, Max slowly walked the half-a-sleep Red into his bedroom, where they slept with their cloths on. The morning would find Red anxious to have Max as her new lover. (18)
The life at the ranch seems quietly simple. Lovers meet and soon they are in each others arms. The delights of the heavens come so naturally in a place that doesn't seek to promote anything but beauty and serenity. Roberto closed up the bar and took Cassandra's hand to lead her to the Jacuzzi. They were the last ones awake at the ranch and would enjoy the moonlit night until the sounds of love would stop. The coyotes seemed to be in the same mood. (19)
The lights at the ranch automatically shut down and the total peacefulness of the place becomes apparent. The moon is about halfway over the valley and it seems, that everything and everyone is asleep, but there is a musical sound coming from somewhere in the valley. Rosemary had been sitting at her piano playing some half forgotten tunes that had put Tom to sleep long ago. She knew on nights like this, that she couldn't sleep until she had fulfilled a creative urge that was growing inside her. She had tried to finish a love song. She was writing this song for the last few months, but the ending had eluded her until tonight. She would sing it for the first time tomorrow night for the guests.
Around nine, most of the guests had arrived for breakfast. split had moved some of the tables to make a single long table. He expected his group to about double in size, due to the nights activities. He wasn't far from wrong. Only Pedro and Roberto were missing at the table and that was because they were working. Joe, Max and Skip, all joined in to see what the day would bring.
Does anyone want to visit Ensenada today, Split asked? We also want to go to the beach. You can ride horses there or here, if you would like, he added.
None of the guys wanted to go because they were old hands at this tourist stuff. They figured the only thing they would get stuck with was the bill and besides, they had planned a golf game for the day. Marci and Cassandra both wanted to stay behind and spend their time by the pool but the rest of them decided to go with Split. That meant six of them packed into the Honda. Fortunately, Kay decided to keep Cassandra company at the last minute. Each group wondered off at it's own pace with lots of hugs and promises about later on in the day. Tom noticed how well the group was getting along together. He came over to talk to each of them to see how they were enjoying their stay so far. He was glad to see his buddies making time with the ladies. When he reached Split, they made plans for a Sunday meeting. Split said that he wanted Cassandra and Kay to join them. Tom agreed and mentioned that he would like Fred and Joe to be in on the meeting too. It was agreed.
Split unhooked the car from behind the bus and drove it over to the club house. The girls jumped in and they were off for a day of shopping. Split reminded them that this was a small car so they shouldn't buy large things. If they wanted something big, they could pick it up tomorrow in the bus as they were driving home.
Most of the conversation during the morning was about the night before. Each of the girls had their own version of what had happened. The only thing that Split paid attention to, was when Hazel mentioned about Joe's story and how Kay had gotten upset about Split's cure.
She never did give us a straight answer, Hazel said to Split. Are you going to?
The best answer is no, but I'll try to do better than that, Split said irritated by the question. We have a possibility of a breakthrough in the general treatment of cognitive dissonance. (C) That would mean that you could enjoy some of the more exotic pleasures in life without getting hooked on some form of negative behavior. The problem is, that it will hurt other types of businesses. These are very powerful concerns and they aren't likely to take something like this lying down. We aren't sure that we have come up with just the right cure. We will have to test it for awhile before we want to release any information. At this point, any information that is leaked could do serious damage to our research and many other projects that the I.C.P. is working on. Please don't let it go any further than this conversation, Split ended with. He knew that he couldn't tell them that the blue guppies already had proven his theories correct. He was glad that he was the only on that had seen the connection between his fish experiments and the cure. He parked the Honda and they all started going in different ways. They had agreed to meet back at the car at one o'clock. Cate and Split paired off together because he wanted to get her something special and he could use some help in picking up a gift for the boys and her neighbors.
Red, Hazel and Tuti tired of the shopping quickly and stopped at a canteen with a view of the main street below. They were on their second margarita's when Tuti spotted Cate and Split with their arms full of gifts.
Cate! Split! We're up here, Tuti yelled. They both spotted her and waved back.
We'll be there in a minute. First we need to put the packages in the car, Split yelled. The car was only two blocks away and there was enough room behind the back seat for the packages. Both of them were anxious to take a break from the walking and haggling. When they arrived at their seats in the canteen, they found two huge margarita's waiting for them.
The chatter went from what each of them bought, to who was on the menu tonight. split said he wanted to be alone with Cate, if it was all right with her. Tuti agreed, provided that next week they all got together for a group party. Split told them that this was the last weekend that they all would be together because of security concerns. He suggested that they camp out in Mexican Sunday night and have this party. It would be kind of a going away party for most of us. It could be another six months to a year before they could all meet again. He suggested that they all plan on meeting at the ranch one year from yesterday. They all agreed.
Red suggested that we tease Marci, Kay and Cassandra a little tonight. Let's hit on their dates and see what their reactions will be. Split told them that they wouldn't have any trouble with Cassandra. She wants to play while she's down here.
Hazel said that she can't do anything with Marci because she would just invite her to join them. She was scandalous to the max, she added. Red, you are the only one that she might react to. How about it?
Sure! Pedro looks like he has all his parts. He has a great sense of humor, Red said more to herself.
Tuti. It looks like it's up to you to make the other assignments. Who do you want to chase tonight, Hazel asked?
I think I'll go after Skip. With a name like that he should fit in rather good. Do you think Kay will put up a fight, Tuti asked Split?
I don't know. But don't hurt her feelings if she does. You can always adjust, he suggested.
That leaves me with a choice between Max and Roberto. I'll bet Marci will go for Roberto, so I'm going to concentrate on Max, Hazel said.
They were back at the ranch in time for fish tacos. This was one of Bennie's best dishes. Everyone was eating pool side. Cassandra had already made her move while the rest of them were in Ensenada. She was deeply engrossed in a conversation with Fred, Tom's Mexican attorney. He was telling her about all the "in's and out's," of getting the ranch through the proper channels that would allow Tom and Rosemary to sell it. This was news to her. She wondered if Split was aware of the possible sale. Maybe this wasn't such a good site for a guppy farm after all, she thought. When Fred stated that he thought that "The Gringo" and Split had made a deal already, she was relieved. Of course, that would be the best method of securing a site.
Do you know what Split is going to do with the ranch, she asked Fred?
No. Not yet. We're suppose to find that out tomorrow morning at a meeting with you and Split. My guess is that it's an exchange for another property where Tom can develop another golf course. That seems to be his main passion. Maybe Split wants it for a headquarters, Fred guessed?
That could be it, Cassandra said not wanting to let too much out before the meeting. She was beginning to really like Fred. she thought, what a contrast for one weekend. One lover that was too young for her and now if everything goes well, one that is too old for her. She was going to take it a little slower with Fred. Let him make the moves. So far he hadn't done much flirting, but she was being very physical with him to let him know which direction she was headed. After awhile, he relaxed with her and started telling her personal stories about his background. He had known Tom many years and worked with him in the States on a lot of projects. They had grown to trust each other over the years.
When the golfer's returned, they found themselves being entertained by the women. Apparently, Joe had won most of the money. It seems that this was usually the case, unless "The Gringo" was playing that day. Tom was the only real competition Joe had on the course. They all drank while they were playing. By lunch, the entire bunch was three sheets to the wind. It was obviously siesta time after lunch, which in this case was around three o'clock.
Tuti had placed herself at Skip's feet and made it quite clear that she had chosen him. Kay was a little upset but she caught on to the game when she noticed that all the girls were playing musical chairs. She immediately struck up a conversation with Joe to keep with the mood. Split winked at her when he saw her choice. The question was, could she deal with all of Joe's stories. He thought a better match would have been Joe and Cassandra. She could have used some of his colorful adventures to liven up the book. Maybe Kay would be able to relate some of them to her later on.
Hazel was sitting between Max and Larry. Max seemed concerned about Red not being close by. She was sitting at the bar with Marci and Pedro. It seemed that Pedro was getting more than his share of attention from the two women. Bennie decided he wanted to get in on the action. He came over to the bar and started to talk with Marci. Marci responded quickly. She wanted to make Pedro jealous, but it wasn't working. Red had his complete attention, at attention. The only one's missing were Julie and Billy. Maybe someday that will work out too. Everyone decided it was siesta time. The only one left was Max. He decided he would go inside and talk to Julie and Billy. (20 through 26)
On the hillside, under a large tree sat the Saturday Siesta Group. They were a group of musicians that played Mexican love songs during the late afternoon for the gringos that stayed at Rancho Esplanade. They watched the couples enter their rooms, holding hands, as if this was all planned and they were only complying with nature's will. The children of the area always joined in a circle around the band to hear the music. They didn't quite understand why this was such a special time, but they sensed that life had a new meaning when the music started.
Tom had joined Rosemary for their customary afternoon respite. They were both looking out of their round living room window, over their incredible ranch, as the couples filed away into their appropriate boxes.
Some things are really predictable on the ranch, Rosemary said to Tom.
If this kind of activity ever stops, we'll be out of business, he retorted.
I know, but sometimes it can get son seamy. I don't know if it's romance or pure sensual pleasure that they are after, she questioned?
It's both and they are hard to tell apart. Sometimes the shortest interlude can be the most memorable of all. Most of the time, I judge it romance if the couple stays together for a long period of time, like you and me, Tom said as he reached over and gave Rosemary a big kiss.
They both sat there for awhile not saying much, just listening to the music and enjoying the soft afternoon breeze. Rosemary gently took Tom's hand and led him to the bedroom. She started to sing the song that they could hear in the background. she made it sound much better than the men did. Tom knew he would be under this women's spell for the rest of his life. (27)
The couples started to return to the main dining hall in their Saturday night get-ups. By seven o'clock the room was full and everyone was enjoying their choice meal. The energy level was getting higher with each moment of anticipation. The regular rancheimers had heard the show many times and they expected the same routine tonight but Rosemary had something new that would bring the house down.
Tom started the show with a few announcements and an introduction of his wife. They did a couple specialty numbers, including the famous, "Gringo-Walk-Away-From-The-Piano" routine. For anyone new to the ranch, this was pure delight but like anything repeated, it lost something each time it was seen by the regulars. They still got a kick out of the newbee's howling reactions as Tom once again fooled the whole house with his antics. Now came the time for more serious music. Rosemary decided to do her new number first. It was dedicated to "The Gringo." One sensed that it would be very special. The crowd was held spellbound as she wove her tale of love and devotion to the man of her dreams. Tom was most taken back by the song and rushed to give her a big hug as the crowd stood and cheered and clapped their hands.
Even the rancheimers were stunned by the shear beauty of the song.. They joined the rest of the group. Once again the joy that they had felt so many times in this special place, returned for each of them. Instead of returning to the bar, they all took seats and joined the rest of the guests and participated like they were reborn.
After Rosemary sang a few more songs, she introduced Larry. Larry sang several songs, including "New York, New York". several other guests were encouraged to sing also. It was a lively group tonight, even by the ranch standards. Tom then started a Joke-Off. He told several rather raunchy jokes and this encouraged some of the old rancheimers to the stage. Most of the crowd was in hysterics after about fifteen minutes of this and didn't even notice Billy setting up the Karaoki equipment in the bar. They removed the ping pong table to make room for dancing and as usual, Rosemary and Tom ended the show with a happy birthday cake for anyone that had a birthday that week.
The crowd slowly left the dining room and took their places in the large Gringo Bar. Billy and Julie were already singing a duet together and had gotten the attention of most of the party go'ers. After Billy sang a solo and Julie did the same, Billy tried to encourage the crowd to come up and sing. They passed out booklets that had a list of the thousands of songs that they had within their system. To the surprise of Split and group, Marci got up first and belted out "La Bamba," with as much gusto as any of them had heard it sung. That broke the ice. For the next three hours it seemed that everyone took a shot at singing. Several people broke their Karaoki that night and sang for the first time in public. Amongst them were Max and Split. Both of them chose old western ballads with whiskey voiced singers. The "Big Guy Society" was well represented that night. Several of the rancheimers and new guests were men well over six foot tall and carrying a considerable amount of weight, including Skip. They got up and sang love songs to each other, in painfully funny ways. The night peaked with these antics. It was hard for anyone to imagine more frivolity packed into one night than they had experienced that night. Most of the activity was totally spontaneous and probably couldn't be repeated again if the participants wanted to. This was mixed in with professional entertainment, but it wasn't allowed to intimidate the novices.
After some time, the guests began to wonder back to their rooms. Split's group stayed with their afternoon partners and night time love making was once again upon the valley.
Split had agreed to meet Tom and his people at ten o'clock Sunday morning, after breakfast. He knew that Tom would be saying his good-bye's to the guests and that the meeting would only be semi-private. Split asked Tuti to take Red, Hazel, Marci and Cate for a horseback ride during the time of the meeting. Kay and Cassandra sat at the table with Split. Then Joe and Fred joined them. The Gringo was still talking with some of the guests as they were preparing to leave.
What's on the agenda today, Fred asked Split?
We have to get rolling on several matters of importance today. Do you think Tom will break free soon, he asked?
I'll go get him, Joe said. He went over to the bar and told Tom that we were all there and ready. Tom said he would join them in a minute or two. First he would have to get Rosemary's help in seeing off the guests. Joe returned to the table and in a few minutes Tom joined them.
How's it going Split, Tom asked?
Real good. We've got the guppy program on schedule and it looks like I've lined up some financing for our real estate exchange, Split mentioned.
Tell me about the guppies first, Tom said.
We're all set in the States, but we are going to need your help to go international with them. We need a good fresh water pond and we need to start a seafood restaurant in Ensenada. Do you have any ideas, he queried Tom?
We only have a small stream running through the valley, but I think it wouldn't be too much of a problem to have some of the men dam it up and create a pond. As for the restaurant, Bennie can help you locate a spot and Fred can help you with the contracts, Tom answered.
That's good. I'll want Mack Tunick to work with your people when they build the dam. He's an architect and a member of the I.C.P. Can Bennie help find a good staff for the restaurant, Split asked?
Sure. When do you want to start with these projects, Fred asked?
This week if possible. We're getting some heat Stateside and I want to have this project completed well before we have any problems there. It would also be good if we finalized the deal on the ranch. You still want to build another golf course, don't you Tom, Split asked?
If the deal is right and we can come to terms. That would be exactly the ticket I'm looking for. I need a new challenge and Rosemary is getting tired and needs a break for awhile, Tom answered.
I think you'll be very pleased with the terms. You'll walk away with a chunk of cash and the payments on the new place will be prepaid for three years during the development time. This course will be a truly international event. If everything goes as planned, the golf course will be surrounded by multi-use buildings, owned by corporations from different parts of the World specializing in biosphere technologies. (II) Wait until you see this property. It has three hundred and sixty degree views from almost every hole. It comes complete with plans for the course and the clubhouse. You might also be able to build a few luxury condo's around the course, he added.
What is the first thing that we should do, Fred asked?
I'll send Mack down here to work with Tom on the dam and he'll bring our attorney, Ralph Binski. If you and he can hammer out the agreement, I'll take it to my money people and get a timetable from them. I want to put this deal to bed within sixty days, Split said emphatically.
Where do these women fit into the picture, Joe wanted to know? [TMW/BAT/W]
Cassandra here is working on a book that we will use as a marketing tool to finance the Starlife Community. [ICP] I'll be sending Tom copies of each of the chapters so that he can follow the progress of the development. Just ignore the soap and pay attention to the action and you will be able to grasp most of what we are trying to do at the I.C.P. Kay is my second in command. I try to keep her abreast of all the activities of the I.C.P., in case anything happens to me. As for the other women, they are playing a cat and mouse game with me that involves some very powerful and dangerous politicians in San Diego. This trip was a true vacation for all of them. They deserved it after all the hard work they've been doing for us. We are meeting here again in one year, if not sooner, Split said.
How often are you going to come down and work with us, Tom questioned Split?
I think we should work together as much as possible, both in San Diego during the week, when you and Joe are up there and then plan the weekends as it becomes important for me to be her, Split answered. It looks like the girls are back from their ride. I guess we'll be hitting the road soon. Do you have any more questions for now, he added?
No. You guys have a good trip back and I'll call you Tuesday morning to set up a meet at my office, Tom said.
They all got up and shook hands or hugged and said their good-bye's. after checking out with Rosemary, the group loaded up on the bus. Cate wanted to ride back to San Diego in the bus so Cassandra took the first leg of the journey back home behind Split on his bike. Cate had heard of the border crossing coming down. She didn't want to miss the action going back. They had decided to go the scenic way through Tecate. Split said he knew of a good spot, just past the border where they could get some good food. He would show them a site that may become another I.C.P. development. They would be able to stay there that night, if everyone felt like doing so, he told them.
The ride to Tecate was mostly uneventful, but the countryside was a real slice of Old Mexico. It is a wondrous combination of the old and the new. One didn't see the shanty towns of old. They were replaced by more modern brick and block construction. The people were prospering.
Once they crossed the border, Split led them to a tract of land in the Protrero Valley. It had one large hill in the middle and the Northern edge of the property was a cliff. The property actually extended several hundred yards beyond the cliff. This was an excellent building site for a special project that Split wanted to develop for the I.C.P. It had a view that included most of Protrero Valley and South to the Mexican mountains. The water table was extremely low on this property and it contains several large ponds. Split was in negotiations with the owner to use the ponds for his guppy project. The owner is a flower grower and liked the idea of his ponds being stocked for commercial use. He agreed to take a percentage of the sales of the fish for the use of his ponds. Split wanted to buy the property from him, but the organization needed to raise more money to be able to develop it properly.
They parked the bus under a large group of oak trees, overlooking one of the ponds. The amount of privacy here was unusually good, compared to anywhere else in San Diego County. They had already eaten at a local restaurant and picked up supplies for an evening cookout. Split wanted both Cassandra and Kay to see this place because it could become an important site in the future.
Cate told Split that she had to be home that evening so that she would be there for the boys in the morning to get them off to school. She told him that she would like to be alone with him, if at all possible. He knew that this was the beginning of a special relationship. He asked her to go for a walk with him so that he could explain the situation better to her. They left the others, saying only that they were going on a nature walk and would be right back. As they walked, Cate took Split's had in hers.
You were sure right about "The Gringo" and his ranch. I never had so much fun in my life before, Cate said sincerely.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself so much. The place really is magical. I don't know what it is about certain places in the World, but some places are just blessed with perfection. Tom and Rosemary seem to bring the place alive. I'm wondering if the ranch will work without them running it. I'm trying to do a deal with "The Gringo" for the ranch. It seems that he wants to build another golf course somewhere and I have an ideal location for him. I just don't know whether it's a good idea or not, from my point of view, without Tom and Rosemary involved. What do you think, Split asked Cate.
The ranch is great, but without Tom and Rosemary it definitely would lose something. Are they willing to come down there sometimes, she asked?
That is what we are trying to negotiate now. I think they would be willing on special occasions, provided they were guests and that the only thing they would be asked to do is perform their routine on Saturday night. I think they really enjoy that part of the business. I know the rancheimers and guests would be thrilled. If we could keep some ranch tradition going, it might be possible to make it work, he said as he stopped and turned to face Cate. He gave her a big kiss and mega hug and then told her about his situation concerning Reta Bailey and Tuti. He explained that he would need to continue seeing both of them, in order not to arouse suspicion with his political counterparts. He promised that anytime he saw Tuti that she could come along. She like that idea, but wanted to know about Reta.
Reta was employed by the congressman to get information out of me concerning the blue guppies. I don't know whether or not she would enjoy being with both of us or not, Split said hoping that Cate couldn't be angry.
Next time you have a date with her, just bring her by the apartment and we can meet. Maybe I'll be able to get some kind of a reaction from her, Cate said trying to reassure Split of her intention to be helpful. Are you trying to tell me that the big guppyman is interested in settling down to just one girlfriend, she added?
I really care for you Cate and I don't want to lose you because of another women, he said anxiously.
You know I broke up with the kid's dad because he was sleeping around. The big problem was that he wasn't telling me the truth. It hurt when I had to find out from someone else. He was even sleeping with several of my best friends. They would come around and play me for the fool. It's made it so I don't trust very easily any more, she said with sadness in her voice.
I don't blame you. If you can put up with this nonsense for a little while, I'll make it up to you in the long run. I'm glad you don't trust people quickly anymore. That's the easiest way I know to get your feelings hurt, Split said looking into eyes for a reaction.
He hugged her again and she felt that all was right with things between them. They turned back on the trail towards the others and started walking, when Cate saw some wild flowers. She started to gather them and then she noticed a different type of flower. She added some of these to her collection and put in some ferns that were growing next to the pond.
These should be good for our table when we have the picnic, she said.
They look great, he said happy that she had changed the subject. There seemed to be no end or depth to Cate's understanding of his situation. It' a good thing that they became friends before they tried to have a close relationship. This way he knew that she was aware of his wild ways and seemed content to let him plot the path of their new togetherness. He looked at her with a feeling of intense tenderness. She let him know that everything would work out fine, if he didn't lie to her. Split made a silent vow to himself not to break this trust.
When they arrived back at the campsite, only Kay and Cassandra appeared to be there. After he looked closer, he realized that the rest of them had gone skinny dipping in the pond. They weren't making much noise so he surmised correctly, the at the girls were playing with each other again. They seemed to be insatiable when it came to lovemaking. (28)
Hi! How are you lovebirds doing, Cassandra asked?
Fine, but I'm, going to have to take Cate back right after the picnic. Can you see that everyone gets home, Split asked Kay, as Cate started preparing a flower arrangement for the camping table?
We'll be fine Split. don't worry, she said.
After about an hour, the others came back from their swim. Most of the food was ready by then. They all looked like they could use a good nights sleep by the time the meal was over. Split and Cate said their good-byes and headed back to San Diego. The rest of them would stay over night in the bus. Split made arrangements with Kay to bring the bus back to the Stadium, where he would pick it up Monday. Their pledge to meet again next year at the ranch was mentioned several times to make sure that it wasn't forgotten. This was a weekend that nobody wanted to have come to an end.
Cassandra decided to use this evening as a chance to "pick the brains", of Tuti's group. She wanted to know just how loyal each of them was to Split or the I.C.P. She had to explain in more detail exactly what the I.C.P. stood for. She gave each of them one of Split's book [ICP] to help in their understanding of the political adventure they were embarking upon. Red seemed to be the most astute member of the group but Tuti was clearly in charge. The night brought Cassandra a better understanding of why Split had chosen Tuti to head up such a dangerous mission. She seemed fearless and totally committed to Split. Tuti explained some of the hoops that she had put Split through before she decided to trust him. Cassandra felt that Tuti wouldn't let them down. The weekend was punctuated by all of the participants making love as only Cassandra would allow them in her fantasies. (29)
PRIORITIES AND ANTERIORITIES
On Monday morning, Split had a list of things that he wanted to get accomplished before the week was over. He called Ralph Binski to set up a meeting for him with Tuti at Bully's. He wanted her to keep Ralph abreast of all the activities at Sid's house. Maybe they could set Sid up before Sid found out about their activities. He also wanted Tuti to feel safer about the whole situation. This meeting would prove to be a major mistake in Split's plan.
Next, he called Reta to make a date with her for Wednesday night. He felt this would give him enough time to prepare a plausible scenario for her to bring back to the congressman. This date would prove to be one of his best actions.
He then called Mack Tunick and told him about his plans in Mexico. They arranged for Mack to meet Tom and Fred at his office on Wednesday. He inquired about the drawings for The Towers and the promotional architectural renderings for the Humanarium Model. He told Mack that the special financing for both projects was underway. He ended the conversation with a reference to a lake that Guy had told him about in San Marcus. They could use all the back-up locations they could find now that time was running short.
He called a local Realtor that had one of the condo's listed at the Crimedos. Split decided to have his own residence there. He knew this would surprise Tuti. It also would make it easier to leave behind his tail whenever he wanted to meet secretly with Tuti or any of her gang. The broker was only too happy to make a deal on this particular condo with only enough money to cover costs and commissions. Split offered the Broker a timeshare for his commission and an agreement was made. Split made an appointment to sign the escrow papers for later on that day after his luncheon with Kay and Cassandra.
He then called Tuti to let her know about the luncheon he had arranged for her at Bully's on Tuesday. He told her, in general, what the purpose was and asked her if he could see her alone on Tuesday evening. He told her he had a surprise for her. She just answered with a "so what's new". Most of the things that Split did, since he met Tuti, had been a surprise to her. This would just be another one.
After one more call to Bob Singleton, to find out how the new pet shop was coming along, Split made some notes to prepare for the day's meeting at Bully's. He particularly wanted to get started with the film's production and promotion.
At noon, the three of them met at Bully's for their planned on session. split noticed that the same waiter that they had last time was assigned their table again. They all went for the prime rib specialty.
How did the two of you enjoy your Mexican weekend, Split started with?
Unbelievable, Cassandra quickly answered.
Cassandra won't even have to make up anything. All she has to do is write down what really happened and the reader will want to make a trip down to the ranch, Kay added.
That's true and it brings me to one of the ideas I've been considering as a promotion for the book and movie. Why don't we get a special travel company to sell vacations that include a professional film crew? The vacationers could pick a character in the book to play. We would have them travel to each of the locations. The crew would film the movie as though each of the actors was a professional. The vacationer would have a video movie to show his friends and family upon returning. The film crew could even do some side work for those individuals wanting something more personal, Split said. (XI)
Great idea, Cassandra said. Maybe we could add a contest element to the idea?
What do you mean, Split asked?
We could select a jury of professionals that would judge the performances of each of the participants and have as an award or awards, actual parts in real projects, she added.
I'd love to do that, Kay interjected. I've always wanted to see if I could act in a movie. I'll bet there are a lot of people out there that would get a kick out of doing something like this on their vacation.
fortunately, there are a lot of characters in the book. That factor would keep the cost down. We could also do short trips based on sections of the book. They could do their favorite chapter, such as the Mexico weekend, on a very low budget and still have a lot of fun, Split said thinking of the practical aspects of the idea.
Another possibility, for the more affluent travelers, would be the opportunity to act along side a real actor. This would keep some actors busy in between other engagements, Cassandra noted.
That brings me to another point that I wanted to cover today. Starting this week, I'm going to go up to Hollywood to scout around. I need to find some key people that know how to get this project off the ground. We are reasonably sure they won't be able to steal too much from us in the beginning. That's because of the way we have this deal structured. That town is full of sharks. They'll just have to realize that they've run into a pack of killer whales. I don't want some pin-headed idiot thinking that they can get something for nothing out of us. Ralph will have a list of everyone I contact. He'll wrap them up so tight, if they try anything, they'll wish they hadn't heard my name. He's putting a specialist onto the project, Split finished with.
Have you come up with any more names for the Dream Team wish list, Cassandra asked?
Ya, I have several. James Garner would be perfect because of his long career and reputation as a lady's man. He would be easy to plug into the digital animation side of the picture. He also has a wholesome image that would help with the sex side of the equation. It's a good thing that the book is written so that the onus is put onto the reader as to their prurient interest in the soap sections of the book. If they want details, we won't disappoint them. Conversely, if they are puritanical in their thinking, they won't have to submit themselves or their children to any sexual activity in the book. I think Garner will appreciate this aspect of the story. He's someplace in the middle and doesn't like to offend his audience for the sake of art, Split said.
Who do you want him to play, Kay wanted to know?
I think he could play either myself or the congressman. It depends on who we can get. It's not likely that we would be lucky enough to get both Eastwood and Roarke. James Garner would fit the bill for either part and should we get lucky, we can give him a choice of any of the remaining parts. Maybe even two of them, he said.
What about the women's parts? Have you decided who would be good in them, Cassandra asked?
I'd love to have Woopie Goldberg play Tuti. She had the face and talent and we could use digital animation to give her a love goddess type of body. I think she has a good enough sense of humor to deal with that. Did you know she spent quiet a bit of time, before she made it big, in San Diego, Split questioned them?
That would be perfect. I'll bet Tuti would like that, Cassandra said. Is that the only part you've come up with? I would like Muriel Hemingway to play me, but won't work unless you can perform a cinematic miracle. Her name would relate to my being a writer and I've always enjoyed her work. Do you think that would be possible?
At this point, anything is possible. We'll be lucky to get any of these people. As for the ones that are too old or dead, we can try to get a contract for there old film footage and use it digitally. We might as well go for the best. I read something the other day that made me think of Phalesha Rashad as a possibility for Hazel. She wants to broaden her image and take a risk. Maybe she would find this script a move in the right direction. After all, it's going to be the first "Evolving Fiction" type of literature. She might enjoy taking fiction and creating it into fact right before the audience's eyes, Split said.
I know I'm going to, Cassandra added.
You had better because we are really counting on you to pull through for us, Kay said seriously. Have you come up with any of the technical people, she asked Split?
This is going to have to be left to the pros. My choices, so far, are Steven Speilberg and Bill Gates. Speilberg would almost guarantee the success of the venture by just lending his name alone, but we need him for much more than that. The problem is, I don't know his politics or his availability, Split stated.
I think you can assume he is a positive capitalist by his work, Kay said. What about Bill Gates?
So far, he has been single minded about his work but this project might present him with a big enough challenge that he will take it on. If he does, we will have to give him a wide birth in which he can work. He already uses a lot of the technologies in his home that we are incorporating into the Humanarium Model, he said.
What can we use him for, Cassandra asked?
Probably anything he puts his mind to, Split answered.
Who should we get for Sid and Ned, Kay wanted to know?
I was thinking of Danny Glover and Danny Arrillio. They could decide between them which part that they wanted to play. If that comes about, we will have to put more meat into their parts. Do you think you can handle that, Split said directing his question to Cassandra?
You get the name stars and I'll write some juicy scenes for you. don't worry about that aspect of the story. How are you going to start, Cassandra queried him?
The first thing I'll do is get some copies of the trade papers and see who is looking for work. Then, I'm going to locate some good casting directors and agents. I'll pick up some promotional material from other movie projects to see what the competition is doing. After I've gathered as much information as I can, I'll prepare a package that will be acceptable to both our participants and our investors, he said with confidence.
Are you going to need our help, Kay asked?
I'll need your help in gathering the information. Then we should all get together to formulate a marketing strategy, Split said as he finished the last of his meal.
As they completed their conversation, Split noticed that the waiter seemed to be hovering over their table. The waiter picked up on Split's concern and quickly made a move towards the group.
Is everything all right, he said with a professional tone in his voice?
Great, but could you bring us the bill and some more tea? Please, thank you, he added.
When the waiter left, Split asked the women if they thought the waiter was acting a little strange. Kay said that he was just getting paranoid because of all the pressure. Split agreed, but decided to remember this incident for later reference. They all left together without noticing the two men that had followed Split to the restaurant. The waiter quickly joined the two men and gave them his account of some of the conversation that he had caught at Split's table. They seemed satisfied and quickly left to continue their surveillance of the group.
Split headed to the real estate agents office to sign the paperwork for his new condo at the crimedoes. This made him laugh, thinking of how this move would be interpreted by the congressman and his cronies. The investment would be almost surely a loser. No sane person buys property in the war zone unless they know something the rest of the world doesn't. After signing the papers and getting the keys, he went to the pet store to talk with Bob Singleton. When he arrived there the boys greeted him.
Way down, guppyman, Yanon said?
Way down what, Split asked not understanding the latest teen gibberish?
You know, how's it going, he repeated with a look of teen triumph?
Working hard. You guys have everything under control here, he asked?
I think so. Bob's in the back, if you want to talk to him, Even said trying to be helpful.
Split went into the back of the store and gave Bob a brief rundown of the events of the last few days. Bob told him that he had spotted several strange looking characters checking out the place. He commented that he felt like a drug dealer the way these people were scratching around. Split told him not to worry because they should have plenty of time before any laws are passed. First, they would have to find something to regulate concerning the guppies. Even with their devious minds, Split thought it would take the government a few months and maybe, with luck, years to come down on the I.C.P. research project. He would soon find out how wrong that assessment could be. The new fast track method of pushing rules through all the hoops had taken on a new dimension. High speed verbal computers with problem solving programs built in have streamlined the process. This was truly a technology war.
Split left the store hoping to find Cate alone at her apartment. When he arrived there, she was busy watering her many plants. He noticed, once again, how nice she kept her small apartment. He had been in many fancy places that had been professionally decorated. Cate's place would fit right in, except for the dollar value of her chosen decorations. She really made the best of a bad situation and Split admired her for it.
Cate placed her watering can down and gave Split a big hug. He told her he had just seen the kids. she wanted to know if they were doing a good job or not?
Cate, you would be proud of them. Bob said they were doing just as good a job as a grown-up would be expected to do. They are very polite with all the customers and have developed a good working knowledge of most of the animals in the store. They spend their spare time reading all the literature in the store concerning the care and feeding of the pets. You shouldn't worry about them, he finished with.
That's my little men, she said with a glint of pride in her voice. do you have some time for some good lovemaking while we have the privacy, she asked as she guided him to the back bedroom?
Silly question, he said as he began to get aroused. (30)
Carrinda came directly from her work to meet with Bill at his condo. When she arrived, Sid answered the door.
Hi, Carrinda. You're just the little lady we've been talking about. Your meeting with Ralph Binski has paid off big time, Sid said as he escorted her into the living room.
Don't tell her everything, Bill said. I want to give her a little token of our appreciation. When Ned and Reta get here, I'll let everyone in on the good news, the congressman said with a note of victory in his voice.
Carrinda went up to the bar and made herself a wine cooler. Bill nuzzled her as she took a sip. He placed a new necklace on her neck while she gazed lovingly at him. The doorbell rang and Sid let Ned and Reta in for the occasion. They all took a seat with a view to the ocean and Bill started his announcement.
As we all know, both Reta and Carrinda have come upon some startling information concerning the activities of the I.C.P. We have been informed by the Genetic Approval Board that based on our evidence, we should be able to arrest several of the key members of the I.C.P. We can't do anything with the research people because they are doing the proper filings so far. What we can do is declare this new breed "endangered," until they have completed their research. This puts them in a "Catch 22" position. They can either reveal what they have discovered now and take the consequences or keep stalling and we can nab the top people for harboring an endangered species.
Do you mean that they have already made this ruling, Reta wanted to know?
That's right. We used a new high-tech, fast-track computer generated program and got a consensus vote at four this afternoon via satellite link. They've given us the ammunition we need to bring Split and his organization down, he said with a note of glee.
Who are we going to start with, Sid wanted to know?
We've learned that Tuti Lunga and Ralph Binski are meeting Tuesday evening at Bully's. Sid, we want you to have Tuti pass on some misinformation to Ralph. This information should cause Split to be in the right place to be served with a notice that covers the new regulations. The written instructions and notice will be legal, but the verbal instructions will be the misleading element. If Tuti follows through with your instructions then we will have Split in a web that won't be easy for him to get out of. If Tuti is loyal to Split and tells him about our plans then we will get both her and Ralph Binski for harboring an endangered species, the congressman said. I think we've got them coming and going. Not only that, but we have one of the waiters at Bully's on the payroll. With any luck, he will know in advance whether Tuti has betrayed us or not.
I'm supposed to see Split Wednesday night. Should I keep the date or will it be all over by then, Reta asked with a concerned attitude?
You keep everything going just as before. We won't know the exact timing of the arrest until they make their move, Bill answered.
The group spent the rest of the evening celebrating their victory and discussing all of the possible scenarios. What happens if they decide to release the information. What happens if Tuti and Ralph don't meet as scheduled? What happens if the waiter is unable to determine what Tuti said to Ralph? What happens if Split finds out about the ruling before he can be set up? And so forth and so on. They had a great time playing at "What If."
Towards the end, Reta began to feel uneasy about the whole thing. She began to wonder if what they were doing was right. So far, she hadn't been able to find anything that Split did or said, that was so bad that it warranted this kind of treatment by the government. His motivation seemed to come from positive thinking and problem solving. Why did this kind of action require such harsh measures to stop it? She didn't want to ruin the moment for the congressman, so she decided to keep quiet for now. Her hesitation would prove to be Split's salvation.
The celebration broke up around nine and everyone except Carrinda went home. Carrinda stayed with the congressman and they had a great evening together. He was very pleased that everything went so well. Carrinda had proved to be quite the little trooper. She was beginning to think of the future with Bill. Could it be possible that they might someday be together for real? With this thought in mind, she made sure that the congressman had a glorious evening. (31)
Split left Cate's place and went to Levitt's furniture store. He bought all new furniture for his condo. He brought the bed and a TV with him in the back of the truck. He wanted to spend his first night in the place alone to get a feeling for the crimedoes. The condo was the first one to the north of the gate. He would be able to catch most of the action as it took place.
When he arrived at the condos, nobody noticed him at first. After he unloaded the TV, it became apparent to some of the tenants that he was moving in. Several people came out of their condos to watch him. He wondered why someone didn't come over and talk to him. Finally, he was forced to help, it seemed that there were five or six people jumping at the chance. He figured it was mostly because they were curious.
They proved very helpful and Split offered them a beer. They offered him a hit on their joint and Split decided this would be a good time to make an exception and have a toke. He wasn't ready for the reaction that this would have on him. He hadn't smoked anything for years. This put him in a very silly mood, but it helped him break the ice with his new neighbors. He didn't realize it then, but this would prove invaluable later on when he needed real help. They partied together for an hour or so and then his new friends left. Split somehow felt that this experience was going to be very mind expanding. He had entered a new culture. This was really a country within a country, as he would find out later.
That night Tuti received a phone call from Sid. He gave her the instructions she was to pass onto Ralph at their meeting at Bully's. She was to tell him about the new rulings and suggest that Split abandon his research project. If split tried to do this, they would be ready to catch him in the act. He would then fall into the trap because he no longer would have an authorized research project. They would get him for harboring the guppies instead. After Tuti received her instructions, she decided that she had better find Split and warn him. She called his regular number, but only got his answering machine. As she hung up, she heard a knock at her door. It was Hazel.
Honey, you aren't going to believe what your crazy boyfriend just did, Hazel said excitedly as she entered Tuti's apartment.
What's he up to now, she asked?
He's moving into the crimedoes, she answered quickly.
Why would he do a fool thing like that, Tuti wanted to know?
I don't know, but several people helped him move in just about an hour ago, she said as she went to the fridge to get a beer. Are you going to visit him?
I think we both should. I've got some terrible news for him. Grab me a beer and show me where this fool is, Tuti said as she opened the door to leave.
They both walked over to Split's condo not saying very much to each other. Tuti wondered how all this would effect his plans. When they got there, Split answered the door looking a bit wild eyed.
Boy, new travels fast in the jungle. How did you find out so fast, he wanted to know?
The drums told us, Tuti said joking with him. I sure like your new furniture. What's it called, Early American Floor?
I wasn't planning on having any guests until I got things ready, he said.
I'm sorry we bothered you, but I got some very disturbing instructions from Sid a few minutes ago. I was just trying to reach you when Hazel came over to tell me that you are moving into the crimedoes. Why are you doing that, Tuti questioned him? don't you have a home already?
Yes, but I needed a place closer into town. This seemed like a fun place to land. I already know everybody here. I can keep track of my other investments, he said.
That's fine, but I've got some bad news for you. Sid just called with some orders. He wants me to set you up by telling you about the new laws they just passed. If you don't stop your research, they are going to get you for harboring an endangered species, Tuti said.
How did they ever get these laws passed so fast? This screws up our timing. How are you supposed to get this information to me? I don't think they know I'm here tonight, he added.
Sid wants me to tell Ralph about it at our meeting tomorrow. What should I tell him, she wanted to know?
Tell him exactly what they want you to say. I'll get in touch with Ralph before your meet and we'll plan something. This may just be your loyalty test. There must be some reason why they want you to talk to Ralph first at Bully's. Maybe the place is bugged. I think that we should assume that it is and try to feed them misinformation, Split said trying to clear his mind.
Are you all right, Hazel asked?
Not really. Some of our neighbors gave me a hit on some powerful gunga. I haven't had any of that stuff for years. I'll have to rethink this plan in the morning. Do you two want to break in my new place tonight? I'm sure in the mood, he said with a gesture to the bedroom.
You know me. It's always tunga lunga time, Tuti said as she grabbed Hazel's arm to lead her into the bedroom. (32)
In the morning, Split went to a pay phone and called Ralph. Ralph suggested that they don't do anything about the research project, but that they start to dismantle the pet shop, at least as far as the current inventory was concerned. Ralph agreed to take some of the fish home with him and he said that he would help Tuti set up a tank after their luncheon. Ralph suggested that they accelerate the Mexico deal. They set up a meet for Wednesday with The Gringo at his office. Split felt better after talking to Ralph.
After a quick breakfast he went to the pet shop to let Bob know what was happening. Bob told him that they had been able to market only about a hundred pair of the guppies. He had the names of each person that purchased them along with their vital stats. This was a major set back for their plans. They needed more time. They both made a list of people that they thought would be willing to take on some of the fish. Split didn't know how big of a risk this would be for anyone caught with them. He told Bob that they had better expect the worst and to let everyone know that there could be serious consequences for the owners of any of these blue guppies. It was decided to have all the fish out of the shop by Wednesday afternoon. any remaining fish would be given to Ralph and Tuti until they could determine just how serious the problem really was.
Split went to Cate's and asked the next door neighbors if they would take some fish. Bob and Sue seemed enthused about getting involved. Split tried to warn them of the risks, but they wanted to be part of the solution. Neither of them liked the way government was using a heavy hand to stop Split's research.
After setting up the Youngs with a tank, Split lectured the boys and Cate once again about not letting anyone know about the actions of the fish. He told the boys that they would be able to continue working part-time with Bob at the pet store. He told Cate about his date with Reta tomorrow night and how he wanted her to help him convert her, if possible. He felt this was possible. Having her understanding could only help, if a liaison was necessary in the future. Cate agreed to cooperate. She could feel the tension in his voice. Split also told her to get rid of most of the fish to friends that she could trust before the eco-terrorists came over. He told her to leave a few guppies to turn in to the authorities because it was certain that they were aware of her participation in the program.
After leaving Cate's, Split called Guy to tell him of the situation. Guy said he would take some of the fish to another location that had a small lake that could be converted for breeding purposes. The lake was high above San Marcus. Guy had planned on building his dream home there someday. He had a small trailer parked on the property that could easily be used to store more of the fish without arousing any suspicion.
Split then called Mack Tunick and asked him to join them at the Gringo's office the next day. He told him that all plans were to be accelerated and that the risks were increasing by the minute.
Split spent the rest of the day lining up people to take as many of the fish into their homes as possible. He told each of them the risks, but promised that if they succeeded in stopping the bureaucrat's, that it would be to everyone's advantage. He was able to place about ten pair. He personally delivered the fish that day. He knew that he would have to shake the officials that were watching the shop. That was a little tougher than usual because he couldn't make unusual moves while driving with the guppies in the truck. He accomplished the move by taking them through the Horton Plaza's parking lot and leaving out of an exit that they couldn't follow him through.
The congressman was monitoring the actions of the whole scene, but failed to realize that Split had already been informed. He was waiting until after Ralph and Tuti's meet to determine just what type of action to take. So far, everything seemed normal. He was getting used to Split losing his tail. He decided to get more aggressive and use backup units and more electronic surveillance. He didn't want to lose track of him for the next couple of days, if possible. He made the necessary calls to make sure that his plan would take effect. He wanted Split or some of his main people arrested before the week was out. There didn't seem to be any holes in his plans. It was just a matter of which way to strike first. The congressman was on a natural high. He loved confrontation when he knew that he held the upper hand. He called Sid to make sure that Tuti would be at the house Wednesday night in case they had to arrest her instead of Split. Sid said that if they got Tuti with some of the fish, the attorney would also be implicated. Bill told Sid about the announcements that would begin this evening on television and in the newspapers.
By tomorrow there should be no excuse for anyone harboring the blue guppies. The penalties will be spelled out by the media very clearly. By tomorrow evening, we should be able to start the process. The I.C.P. will be on the run by next week if we don't fumble the ball, the congressman said to Sid.
We have both the Humanarium lab and the pet shop covered completely. If they try anything, it will give us the opportunity we need, Sid said.
Let's meet here for a strategy session Thursday morning. Reta has a date with Split the night before and it will be very interesting to see that his initial reaction will consist of. I don't think he will panic. But I'm reasonably certain that he will make some mistakes, the congressman said.
What should we look for, Sid asked?
Primarily, anyone that blatantly tries to circumvent the new laws. We already know some of the people that have the fish. If they don't surrender them, arrest them on the spot. We need to make examples of the first few individuals to make sure that everyone understands that we are very serious about these laws. We can be more lax later and let others have more of an opportunity to give up the fish voluntarily. We don't want to appear too harsh in the eyes of the public or we will defeat our own purpose. Remember, we have to come out of this as appearing to be the saviors. The public must be made aware of the dangers of run-a-way genetic research. The press will have to hit on that theme over and over again. This way, the public will understand that we are destroying this research group for their own good, Bill said as though he was addressing a large group of people.
What should we do with the fish that we confiscate, Sid asked?
Bring them to our research people. We still need to know what they are really doing to alter these fish. Theoretically, they could just switch to another animal. Remember, the gene race is still on. (K) If they can get a patent on some of the vital genes in the human pool, we might be in for some real competition. I've checked with the Human Genome Project's advisory panel. (G) They told me that there is a small possibility that this research could have very serious political implications. I won't go into what these are now, but if you want to know more, come to the briefing Thursday morning, the congressman said trying to end the conversation with Sid.
I'll be there for sure. Give me a call tomorrow if you need my help, he added.
I will. Do the best you can. See ya Thursday, Bill said as he hung up.
Most of Tuesday was uneventful except for the networking activities of the members of the I.C.P. They were able to place the fish with members and friends despite the overwhelming news stories that were being circulated by the press. There were now at least a thousand pairs of the blue guppies in secret places. One of the strange things that happened was that only two people that had bought the fish prior to the public announcements had chosen to surrender their fish. It seems that even the general public wasn't buying the congressman's scenario about how dangerous the fish might be to the nation. Perhaps this was a classic study in human teleology. (R)
Ralph and Tuti met at Bully's as planned. They were seated by the waiter that the congressman had on the payroll. They both knew what to say to each other. They made sure that it was very easy for anyone interested to be able to overhear their conversation. After the meeting both of them left feeling that they had pulled it off as planned. Tuti's loyalty test should be secure and Ralph supposedly would be reporting to Split that he would have to stop the research or face charges. The rest of the day they spent finding homes for more guppies.
Both of them were followed with a much more sophisticated tracking system. Everything would have gone the way it was planned except that Ralph never called Split to report the conversation. He just assumed that it wasn't necessary because Split already knew what was going on. Ralph's phone wasn't bugged and there weren't any bugs in his office or home, so he assumed that it was safe. It wasn't. The congressman was using a new long distance listening device that allowed his people to catch every word that Ralph said to anyone that day.
The congressman talked to the waiter after Ralph and Tuti left. At this point in time, he thought that Tuti had done what she was suppose to do. By the end of the day, he got the report on Ralph's activities and Tuti's movements. It was obvious that Split had somehow found out about their plans. Bill decided then and there to hang both Tuti and Ralph as soon as possible. He made the necessary calls to the authorities and set the process in motion. By the end of the week, he was confident that both of them would be in custody.
Split left a note with Hazel to let Tuti know that he was going to spend the evening at his Valley Center house. They had already found out what his surprise was the night before anyway. He needed to get prepared for the onslaught from the press and the authorities. He would spend the evening on his computer writing possible press releases. He also needed to prepare for his meeting with "The Gringo" and his architect.
By Wednesday morning the paperwork was already processed to have both Tuti and Ralph arrested. The congressman decided to have them picked up while Split was out with Reta. That way, he figured Split probably wouldn't hear about it until the next day and the press would be all over him.
At the meeting with Tom and Mack, Split outlined the new accelerated plans for his international expansion plans. Mack and Tom agreed that they should both leave for Mexico and stay there until the local situation cleared up. This would be another safety valve for the I.C.P. Split gave them some press releases that he had prepared for the Mexican press in case the congressman had some way of quashing his statements to the press. He told them that the situation could go one of two ways and he prepared them for both. He also told them to contact either Kay or Cassandra in case anything happened to him. They were prepared to carry on the programs of the I.C.P. if Split was unable to.
That evening, Split went to Reta's house as planned. After being let in by one of her daughters, he sat in the living room waiting for Reta. He noticed that the house seemed in quite a mess. This surprised Split because Reta was always immaculate in her appearance. Split's mind began to wonder as he was waiting. He started to think about the Humanarium project. How would all of this effect the program if they couldn't use the guppies for the wall system? (E) He wondered if any of the nanotechnology specialist would catch onto what he was trying to do with the fish? (F) Reta's daughter brought him a cup of coffee and as she did, Split noticed that the kitchen was also in chaos. This thought induced a new idea into his consciousness. Mathematical Chaos was a theory that he had been studying lately and now he was seeing a potential problem with the Humanarium project not unlike some of the mathematical models he had read about. (I) What happens to the other residents of a Humanarium unit if one of the participants is totally undisciplined in basic like habits? This person could be very intelligent, just like Reta, but not be able to realize how disturbing this mode of actions would be on the other members of the group. Just then Reta entered the room. She looked great. What a contrast, Split thought as he rose to greet her.
How lovely, he said.
Thank you. Please excuse the mess. I haven't had much time lately for domestic chores, she added.
Don't the girls help you out, he asked?
No. They're worse than me, she said with a kind of dumb blond laugh.
Split decided to leave the subject alone for now. Are you ready for a quiet night on the town?
Sure. What do you have in mind, Reta wanted to know?
I thought we would visit a friend of mine first. She and her sons are involved in that scheme I was telling you about, he said.
Do you mean the one where you get the kids to sell your guppies instead of dope, she asked?
That's the one. It looks like it's going to have some serious problems with the new laws, Split said trying to bait the conversation with Reta?
Why's that, she asked?
We've built up an inventory and an advertising campaign around this particular fish. I guess we could switch, but that would mean developing another strain of fish. They would probably just pull the same stunt on us again, he finished with.
Why do you have to use fish for this project, she queried?
It's tied into other projects that we are doing with the Starlife Community. We don't want to have to do something that is less than the best. You would have to come see the whole project to really understand what's going on. Would you like to do that this weekend, he asked?
Sure. It sounds like fun, but aren't you going to have to discontinue your research and turn in your specimens, she wanted to know?
I don't know at this point. We have a lot of contingency plans that might save the day, but we seem to have picked up some powerful enemies along the way. If they really knew what we were up to, they would back us. That is, if they weren't people that were just looking for more power, just for powers sake, Split said in an angry tone of voice.
Why don't you just tell them what you are really doing, she added?
The risk is too great and it already looks like we are dealing with the wrong type of people. It's obvious that they are using scare tactics trying to force the information from us. These are exactly the type of people we don't want to have control of our work. Would you like to meet a friend of mine that has both of her sons in the project, he asked?
Sure. When?
Why not now. Then we can go dancing. Does that sound like a plan, he said while doing a little jig in front of her?
Great. Let's go, she said as she danced out of the house with Split doing the same behind her.
They drove to Cate's house and met with the family. Reta was impressed by the warm feeling that Cate and her boys projected. Here was a family with very few advantages that still have a very positive and healthy attitude toward life. She was most impressed with the boy's knowledge of business and their general enthusiasm for the project. They didn't seem to be discouraged by recent events and this bothered Reta. She wondered whether or not they knew something and that they were hiding it from her. By all rights, they should have been down hearted about the situation. They just went on and on about their future plans as though nothing had taken place. Maybe it was just youthful thinking, but it made Reta nervous. she decided not to interrogate them at the moment. she would wait and see how things developed. She was also very impressed with Cate's political knowledge. They invited Cate to join them, but she said she had too many things to do around the house. She gave Split a wink of approval as the two of them left. Reta was feeling more uneasy about this assignment every minute.
That's a nice family, Reta said to Split as they got into his truck.
I know. They are the wave of the future for the I.C.P., he said.
Why is that, she wanted to know?
Any political party needs to reach the heartland of a country or it will never succeed. These are the real people in America. They represent both the present situation and hold the key to our future. If our country wastes good people like the Collors, we'll be in deep trouble in no time.
I see what you mean, she said thoughtfully. Do you think the new laws will hurt them?
There is about a fifty/fifty chance. It depends on the public's perception of what is really going on. Unfortunately, our enemies have most of the power to manipulate the masses. We can only hope that common sense and some good planning will offset this. We could also use some luck, Split said with a hopeful uplift in his voice.
Where are you taking me dancing, she said to change the subject? She was feeling more uneasy every minute.
What's your favorite kind of music?
Jazz, she answered.
That's mostly listening music. I thought you wanted to go dancing, he asked rather puzzled. You've gotten me into a serious mood tonight. Jazz helps me sort out my thoughts. Do you mind, she asked Split.
Not at all. I love jazz too. Maybe we can do the dancing this weekend when I take you up to the Humanarium Model, he suggested?
That sounds like a definite possibility. Do you know any good jazz clubs, she added?
We're on our way, he said as he made a quick left hand turn to head towards downtown.
They toured the area just east of Horton Plaza. It had become the music and dining hot spot of San Diego. For years the area had been inundated with derelicts of all kinds. The city had built benches for public use throughout the downtown area. Recently, they realized that they weren't being used by the public. They became outdoor bars for wino during the day the benches were used for sleeping quarters at night. Someone at city hall finally admitted that this was the problem and they pulled out all the benches and planted flowers everywhere instead. Since then, the downtown area has thrived. Once again, people feel safe while walking the streets. Like most San Diegans, Reta had only driven by the area to visit Horton Plaza during the day. She was amazed at the changes that had taken place. Both of them visited several clubs and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Reta was in a very reflective mood when they left and asked Split if it was OK if they didn't make love that night. She said she had some serious thinking to do between now and this weekend. Split pretended not to know what she meant, but let her know that it wasn't a problem for him. They agreed to meet at ten Saturday morning at her house. They kissed and hugged for a few minutes on the porch and Reta almost changed her mind. She was feeling guilty about her motivations with Split. She was becoming aware of the possibility that she might be on the wrong side in this conflict. Split left for Valley Center and a good nights sleep.
In the meantime, the authorities picked up Tuti and Ralph. Both of them were just being held for questioning at first, but when it became apparent that they weren't going to implicate anyone else, they were booked at about four in the morning. Split received a call from Hazel telling him about the situation. He told her to check with Sid Michalson to see if he would let her know anything. Split called Guy and Shekay to see if the authorities had been messing with them. Guy told him that everything seemed normal and that they were complying with all the regulations. They surmised correctly that Tuti's instructions were just a bluff to see if they would panic. Split told Guy that he would call him in the evening at the usual place. If he didn't call, he instructed Guy to be there every night for a week, just to make sure. As far as communications were concerned, Split decided to move away from the Valley Center location. If things got out of hand, he needed this house as a get-a-way spot. He called and transferred his number to the condo in San Diego. Split then called "The Gringo" in Mexico and told him which press releases seemed appropriate at this time.
Bob Singleton received a call from the authorities concerning his remaining guppies. Bob told them that he had ceased sales of the fish and was just waiting instructions on what to do with the remaining pairs. They sent several agents to his pet store. While there, they not only picked up the fish, but they also audited his books and questioned the boys. Yanon and Even were prepared for the questions. They both pulled it off like real troopers. The agents gave Bob a clean bill of health, but warned him about any future involvement with the blue guppies.
The congressman gave strict orders not to arrest anyone else at the time. He wanted to test both the I.C.P.'s and the public's reaction to Tuti's and Ralph's arrest. He already knew that Cate and her boys had guppies at their house. He very shrewdly surmised that the public would be outraged if a welfare mom was arrested trying to help her boys make some extra money with the guppies.
Both Tuti's and Ralph's fish were confiscated. The two of them were formally charged with harboring an endangered species and conspiracy under the RICO codes. Ralph knew they were in serious trouble by the way that they structured the charges. His own law firm agreed to defend both of them but also agreed that a plea bargain would probably be their best course of action. It was obvious that the two of them were going to be used to set up the I.C.P. If they pleaded guilty to the charges, the I.C.P. would have minimal damages done. The problem with this scenario was that it was obvious that someone else would be attacked by the authorities. The congressman and his group needed to pin this entirely on the I.C.P. to discredit them. Tuti and Ralph could stall the process, but not stop it.
For the remainder of the week, there were a barrage of news stories concerning the incident with plenty of warnings about the genetic dangers of allowing unregulated species into the home as pets. Toward the end of the week, there was a decided spin on the stories trying to put the blame for the whole crisis on the I.C.P.
In Mexico, Tom and Mack were busy distributing the pair of guppies to sympathetic Mexicans. They also were able to counter every accusation that the press in the States leveled against the I.C.P. with press releases and commentary. This information wasn't being followed by the American press, but it did make the congressman very nervous. Contained in a lot of the stories were humorous digs at the authorities that were pursuing the blue guppies. Political cartoons showing the might dragon, labeled as a bureaucrat feeding on the poor helpless guppies, make a mockery of the whole process. Bill wondered if this would start happening Stateside. He knew how to stop any local damaging press releases, but knew that they would begin soon enough. He had to get quick convictions and make the public afraid of the genetic consequences of the breeding of unregulated species.
Split had some success with his more mild press releases. He didn't want to bring out the big guns yet. With some luck, they might be able to pull down the congressman and his whole group. It was now a media war. He was hoping that a conversion might be possible in Reta's case. This weekend could make or break the whole project.
Sid was the first to arrive at the congressman's condo on Thursday.
Congratulations Bill! You did it, he said gleefully as he entered the condo.
It seems that way doesn't it, he said as he shook Sid's hand? We do have a couple of trouble spots. When the rest of the group arrives, I'll go over the problems with everyone. We can do a little brainstorming and plan the rest of the campaign. Would you like something to drink? I'll be opening the champagne when the others arrive, he said as he moved over to the bar.
The bell rang and both Reta and Ned joined them at the bar. Shortly thereafter, Carrinda made her appearance. The congressman popped the cork on several bottles of champagne and a very festive mood set in with the group. Reta was the only one that was on edge about the whole thing. she had decided to go along with the program until she could determine exactly what Split was up to at his headquarters in the Starlife Community's laboratories. Now was not the time for her to air her doubts about the wisdom of pursuing this course of action against the I.C.P.
How did it go with Split last night, Bill asked Reta?
He was upset, but seemed to have things under control. Are you sure that the publicity will bring him down, she wanted to know?
It depends on how well we handle our end of the situation. If we get too heavy handed, I think the public will turn on us. That's why we aren't arresting anyone else yet. This is a win/win situation for us if we don't screw up. If he cracks and gives us the information we need we'll win and if he doesn't, then the I.C.P. could very easily be discredited as a viable solution for the voters in the next election. Either way, we'll have done major damage to Split and his crackpot projects. What has happened at your end Sid, the congressman asked?
Tuti and Ralph are playing it very close to the vest. They are already trying to plea bargain. Do you think they will get a deal for pleading guilty, Sid questioned the congressman?
I would prefer a long protracted trial, but as long as they go to jail, we will have won a major victory. That alone will set precedence in the courts. It will be easier and easier to prosecute the rest of the I.C.P. members if they don't comply with the regulations. Has anything unusual happened other than that, Bill asked as he gave Carrinda a squeeze?
Not really. Hazel came to me trying to find out what was going on. She asked if she was next and whether she should turn in her guppies or not. I told her it would be all right if she kept them for awhile. I think we can assume that we can't trust her anymore than we could Tuti. We might be able to use her later on to set some of the other members up for a fall, Sid added?
True. Keep her on a short leash. The only other major problems we have are that we can't seem to break through the paperwork to force them to complete their project and reveal their results. I'm working on some rule changes with the agencies that regulate research and development in this type of situation. Within a couple weeks we should be able to force their hand at their labs. Another problem is the type of press that they're getting in Mexico. Do we have anyone that can trace down the source of these articles, Bill queried?
I know some people that might be able to help, Ned answered. It won't be an official inquiry. I used them several times in the past tracking down some of the drug people in Mexico. Things have changed down there since the free trade agreement went into effect, but I'm fairly sure my people still have access to some high level dignitaries that will help. What kind of instructions do you want me to give to them?
Just see if you can find out the sources and if there are any blue guppies being marketed in Mexico, Bill said as he offered more champagne to everyone. Let's drink to our continued success in bringing down the I.C.P.
It went unnoticed that Reta didn't drink to this last toast. She definitely wasn't happy with the way things were going. Reta decided not to tell them about her weekend plans with Split. She remained friendly during the evening because she had very good experiences in the past with this group. She was hoping that maybe she could make both sides see each others point of view and stop the fighting. Could it really be so bad to have a powerful third party in America, she wondered?
That night Split called Guy at the Red Dog Saloon. He told him to have the lab and Humanarium Model ready for his Saturday morning visit with Reta. Split filled him in on all the details and told him how important it was to make a good impression on Reta. She could be the last resort in communicating a deal to the congressman. Split felt reasonably sure the deal would end the fighting if he couldn't win any other way. It was important that she saw and understood his point of view, even if she wasn't converted completely to the I.C.P. Guy told Split, that there hadn't been anymore visitors to the community that looked out of the norm. The authorities hadn't even called him or sent him any correspondence. Guy speculated that they were preparing something new to lay off on him. Split told him that they might have to dismantle the whole operation if the congressman succeeds in arousing the public's fears. He told Guy to think of an alternate plan, should that occur. Maybe, move the operation to a foreign country. That was one of the advantages of being an international political party, instead of just a national one, he mentioned.
What about the Net?
We've finally decided to let lose of this vehicle when the congressman has made a total fool of himself. I've personally prepared the web site. I have a standby list of over one thousand members that joined over the net on our regular site. They are prepared to disseminate the information that we need out at the click of a mouse. I just don't want to be premature with this weapon.
That makes sense. Guy told Split, he and Shekay had become engaged. they didn't want to be married until this project was completed or destroyed, he added.
Split congratulated Guy and they said there good-byes.
Split spent Friday at the Valley Center house gathering information for the meeting with Reta. He also taped the news broadcasts concerning Tuti and Ralph. Ralph's law firm had already been able to set an early hearing for the next week to determine their fate. Split was proud of the way they were both handling themselves. They came across as being persecuted, not as criminals, during several press interviews. The congressman was building a strong case in the publics mind. He gave graphic examples of possible misbehavior in the genetic altering field. Some of his efforts reminded Split of old 1950's horror movies. He just hoped that the public had matured beyond this type of thinking. There weren't any reports of public outcry. Just the usual parade of environmental terrorist plying their trade in the media. This was to be expected. Split stayed away from any direct contact with the press. He left a message on his interactive voice mail that would answer most of the questions that callers would have. He put several ads into the local papers to solicit callers that were either concerned about the blue guppy situation or that wanted to be sent more "in depth" information on the subject. Split spend part of the day monitoring these inquiries. Very few of them seemed hostile. Most were just curious. He checked his e-mail from his web site and found that he mostly had support from the websters, as he referred to them as in his dialogues. In the evening, he checked all of the systems that were keeping the guppies going, both in the pool and down at the lake. There must be thousands of pairs by now. If he could keep things together for a few more months, there would be a big enough supply of fish to complete the first Humanarium Community. If he managed to do that, then his enemies would be exposed for what they truly are, power freaks. Split completed all of his projects and turned in early. The only phone had at the house was his cellular unit. He used this because he had devised a jamming and rerouting device that confused anyone trying to trace him. (Z) He very rarely gave anyone the number, but tonight he heard from both Cassandra and Kay. They were concerned for him. He told them not to worry. Just carry on as planned, was his message. He slept good that night.
The next morning Split picked up Reta at her house. He once again was reminded of how messy her household was. He made a mental note to discuss this problem with Guy. They hadn't made provisions for this type of mentality. Typical human error, Split thought to himself.
Are you ready for a scientific adventure, Split asked Reta as he walked her to his truck?
I think so, but please treat me as a novice, she answered as she climbed into his vehicle.
I won't get too technical, but you are kind of a guinea pig for me. What I'm trying to do will be of very limited use if the general public can't understand it. I just hope I'm up the job of explaining most of it to you, he said somewhat concerned about the situation.
Please start at the beginning, as though I didn't know anything about you or your guppies, she beckoned him.
I'll start with a little history lesson first. I've been raising fancy guppies as a hobby since I was a kid. I should have pursued some sort of medical or scientific career. In high school I received the highest score in the nation on a standardized biology test. That should have been my clue to follow one of these professions, but instead I went into the business world. More specifically, real estate exchanging. I became one of the best exchangors in the country. What happened was quite simple. Every year I witnessed property rights and personal liberties being destroyed by my government at every level. At first I reacted by changing the way I did business every year to compensate for their intrusion. I was very naive about the system and the people in charge. I thought everything was being done for the good of the people. I didn't realize that "for the good of the people" was just a phrase that the cynical politicians and bureaucrats used against the people. The only thing most of our leaders were interested in was lining their own pockets and grabbing more power for themselves, Split said as he was driving.
That isn't true with all politicians, Reta said.
I know, but in a general sense it is true. We live in a democracy and the majority is becoming a tyrant through the manipulations of a few sleaze balls. I'm just trying to wake up as many people as possible to this situation. Fortunately, there are millions of people that think the same way I do. I finally came to the conclusion years ago that I had to get involved. I determined the obvious. I needed a voice and a plan. I started reading everything I could get my hands on concerning political philosophy and anything even remotely similar, he said as Reta interrupted him.
Split! Are you sure you aren't running for office, she interjected?
Impossible! My personal life guarantees that I can't run for office, he said sardonically.
Why not?
I have a genetic defect and I didn't find out about it until I was over thirty, he said pausing to let her ask the obvious question.
What kind of defect, she asked totally puzzled?
When I came home with my future wife to be, in this case my fourth wife, my parents and grandparents didn't seem the least bit upset, except about her young age. This bothered me because they weren't reacting like I expected them to. I started asking questions and finally my grandmother told me that her grandmother was one of Brigham Young's wives. This about floored me because I was raised Episcopalian in Salt Lake City. I surmised, that between the two religions, that I could have as many wives as I wanted and get as many divorces as I needed and would be considered a true believer, Split said with a chuckle.
That explains some of the things I've heard about you, she said with a worried tone in her voice.
Yup! The only hard part about it was trying to survive the AIDS epidemic, he said as he swerved to miss a speeding car.
How did you manage that, she said cursing at the other driver under her breath?
We're jumping ahead here in my story. I'll come back to that point later. Now where did I leave off before I got sidetracked, he asked her?
You were talking about when you started studying politics, she said still wishing she had gotten an answer from him.
Right! That was in the late sixties and early seventies. I found a few writers that I agreed with most profoundly. Ayn Rand would be the one that most clearly stated the problems that we are having in this country. She influenced my thinking and actions more than any other person. On July 4th 1976, I officially started the I.C.P. From that point on, I was committed. It took me fifteen years to finish the book on the subject and a few more years to get some of the projects started that I wrote about. Have you read my book yet, he asked her?
I've read about your book, but I haven't actually read it, she said kind of embarrassed about the fact.
Well, you know, that's kind of the problem I have. If you take a second hand opinion about the book from some political reviewer, you will find that there is a good chance of getting a distorted view of it. If you really want to know what I'm about and what I'm doing, you should read it for yourself. I'll get you a copy when we arrive at the lab, he said.
So what is the purpose of this trip, if all I have to do is read your book, she said sarcastically?
I want you to see first hand what we are trying to accomplish. The future gives us options. If we keep destroying new ideas and hamper other proven ideas with needless bureaucratic bullshit, we quite simply aren't going to be prepared for the next millennium. Within the next hundred years, this planet will be so overpopulated that our ecosystems will be broken down, to next to nothing. "Survival of the fittest" won't just be for the animals. Civilization will be like some of those "after the holocaust" type movies. The difference is, that we won't need bombs to create the problems. Life will just evolve into a chaotic mess if we don't change our system. Look what's happening right now. Your friend, the congressman, is trying to shut us down for strictly political reasons. He has no idea what we are doing and yet he is trying to instill Fifteenth Century fear into the public's mind. This is just to serve his own purposes, Split said forcefully.
And just what do you think his purpose is, she questioned him?
Power!
You don't think he has any higher reason than that, she complained?
He's your basic pragmatist. The problem is, that he is playing with scientific material that has to do with everyone's survival, including his own. He's totally incompetent in this direction. Even with the best of intentions, he would probably screw it up. I don't think he is an evil and mean person by nature, but he becomes one "defacto," when he puts himself in charge of such a delicate political matter. You don't look at polls to judge scientific facts, he said with growing force in his voice.
Wow! You really are a firebrand, aren't you, Reta said trying to interject a little humor into the conversation?
I just get excited when I witness such foolish behavior. If I could tell him what our project will mean to him personally, I doubt seriously that he would do anything to stop it, Split said in a somewhat calmer tone of voice.
Why don't you do just that, she exclaimed?
I am! But, it's going to have to be through you, he said as he paused and looked at her reaction for a moment.
Why is that?
Because he has stopped us in the middle of what we were trying to do and he has placed himself in a very embarrassing position. If he come out now with the truth, he could loose that one thing that he most cherishes, Split paused.
You mean his job as a congressman, Reta interjected?
Right. Maybe you and I can find some common ground that would alleviate the situation between us. I have a hardball method of dealing with him if he gives me no choice. That will be one of the few things I won't cover with you today because I'm not sure that he would really be helpful, even if you do become our negotiator, he said.
They didn't talk for a few minutes. Reta wanted to think about what he had said. Finally she asked him to continue.
Most of the rest of the story is about the projects that we are trying to bring to fruition. You'll be able to see most of them first hand today, he said as he turned off the freeway to head towards Hemet.
Then let's get back to how you survived AIDS, she badgered him.
Several interesting things happened at about the same time. They both contributed to my survival. I had a girlfriend at the time that was curious about lesbian lovemaking. In other words, she wanted to have a girlfriend join us but she was too shy about the matter. She knew that I had some other friends that were lesbians, so she asked me to set her up. This was about the mid-eighties. It seemed that almost every day, there was a body count for the AID's victims in the paper. They broke everything down by categories. The one thing I noticed was that there weren't any lesbian victims. That made me feel good because I knew so many of them. I started to practice ultra-safe sex from that point on. For a long time, I wouldn't even consider dating any straight women because they had probably been with other men. As time went on and the heterosexual victims started to grow in numbers, I became even more that way. Unfortunately, a few lesbians started to get AIDS, but they continued to be a very small amount of the total. That probably accounts for my current behavior. I learned to love being with more than one women at a time. They trusted me and they weren't jealous around me with their lovers. They knew I wasn't out to steal their girlfriends, he said while making eye contact with Reta.
So, what was the second thing that saved you, she said nervously?
I started studying Neurobiology. It became one of my favorite hobbies. I could see why my artwork looked so clinical when I studied the medical drawings in the books I studied, he said. I didn't know you were an artist, she said quite amazed at this revelation?
It's always been a passion for me. My work looks like a cross between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney with a splash of medical illustration thrown in for confusion. They would make good genetic designs. Maybe I'll create one and send it to the congressman so he can scare everyone with it, he said sarcastically.
Boy, you really are strange, she said.
Actually, my pictures have been a source of sanity for me. You see, I refused to sell any of them or give any away so that their could be no established value placed on them. I knew that the government would never be able to tax a persons hobbies, so I kept them in that category. I would just pretend that the pictures were worth a million dollars apiece. That way the government couldn't force me into participating in their mandatory communist schemes.
What are you talking about, Reta said completely perplexed with Split's last statement?
What don't you understand, he asked her?
What communist scheme are you referring to, she asked?
Haven't you read "The Communist Manifesto," Split said already knowing the answer?
No! But I've read a lot about it, she retorted.
See, that's what I mean. You have to go to the original source to find out what is really happening. The graduated income tax is one of the ten key points of communism, as spelled out from day one, by Marx and Engel's. And yet, you could ask that question of just about any American and they would be surprised to learn that they have been forced to live under communist rules, Split ended with.
I see what you mean. What are you, a tax protester, she inquired?
Yes and no. I don't like using illegal methods to live. I have too much respect for the law, but I do everything and anything within the law to beat the stupid system that has been forced on me, he said getting madder and madder every second.
How does your research lab help you in the endeavor, she said very curious about the answer?
It basically will show an individual how self-contained and self-reliant they can become. You see, the government creates problems, quite often, for the sole purpose of having the public go to them for the answers. If we can take the government out of the loop somehow, we can succeed in minimizing their role in problem solving. People can get back to rugged individualism without sacrificing their security or their comfort. The Starlife Community is totally self-contained as a community and each individual building is designed to be self-contained. The buildings will use community facilities only as a back-up, Split said with obvious enthusiasm.
What exactly do you mean, she asked?
Just as she asked this question, Split noticed the hills to the left of him. He could see the actual property they were talking about.
Reta, see those hills over there? Now, look all the way to the most northern part of them. On the top of those hills are two hidden valleys. One overlooking the other and both of them overlooking the whole of Hemet Valley on all four sides. Can you imagine the views up there, he said with wonder in his voice?
But, it looks like it is just a hill and it goes down the other side with steep cliffs on three sides, she said wondering if Split was just pulling her leg.
I know. It's an optical allusion from the roadway, but believe me, it exists. You'll see in a few minutes. We'll drive up the backside. The funny part is you won't believe it until you get completely up to the top. In all my years in real estate, I've never seen a property in Southern California anything like this one, he said proudly.
I believe you. Now back to my question. Give me an example of what you are talking about, she said rather seriously.
A very good example would be some of our alternate energy programs. We are employing many of the state-of-the-art technologies to be self-sufficient, both with each individual building and for the common areas. (A) Thanks to the PURPA laws, the utility companies have to buy our excess electricity. We actually make money from the electric company instead of having to pay bills. But, we still use the utility company for a back-up system in case "Murphy" gets us, he said jokingly.
I see what you are saying. What other kinds of systems are you using in this connection, she said getting down to the nuts and bolts of her mission?
Our water system is completely self-contained. We use combinations of recycled water and high absorption soil to maximize water usage. We even have the golf course designed with underground plastic. This is acting as a mat-type aquifer to capture ground water. Inside some of the buildings are special water projects, such as desalination plants and multi-use wall systems. (A) & (E) We have also created several waterfalls. These waterfalls serve many purposes. Even the water lines are special. They create electricity within the system as the water flows downhill, Split said as they neared the top of the hill.
The place sounds very futuristic, she said as she looked in wonderment at her first glimpse of the valleys.
I hope so. We are using technologies to help further population evolution. (N) Some of these techniques range from the use of superconductivity, to the development of micro livestock. (H) & (M) When we get to the lab, I'll have Guy and Skekay fill you in on some of the other technologies that we are working with. The whole development is geared towards biosphere technology. We don't allow any enterprise into the project unless they are involved in some way with biosphere research or development. You would be surprised at how many companies have switched over to these kinds of research, now that the cold war is over. The only problem we are having is raising enough capital to finish some of the infrastructure projects. We are using a new film script to raise this money. One of our members is preparing the script. The story will include a lot of the real life happenings of the I.C.P. and it's members. Do you want to be in a movie, Split said playfully as he parked his truck?
Thanks, but no thanks, she said as she got out of Split's truck.
Like it or not, you're going to be depicted in the movie. I hope you turn out to be a heroine, Split said.
